2 GENERAL RULES FOR ALL COMPETITORS 1. Entries should be lodged on the enclosed form not later than the Wednesday preceding the Show. Entry is free to all exhibitors. Additional classes may be permitted up to 8.00 p.m. on the Friday at the discretion of the Show Manager. 2 Exhibitors class cards must be obtained from the Stewards and placed, by the exhibitor, face down, in front of the exhibit, between 2.00pm and 8.00pm on the day preceding the show. Vases and paper plates for horticultural exhibits shall be available. Where possible, exhibitors are requested to name horticultural varieties. 3. Each exhibitor is permitted two entries in each Class in Sections 1 to 6. Entry to all other classes shall be limited to one exhibit per exhibitor. 4. Exhibits may not be removed before the Show closes at approximately 4.00pm. Stewards may challenge the removal of, or interference with, exhibits. RULES FOR HORTICULTURAL EXHIBITORS 5. Pots for exhibits in Section 2 should not exceed 25cms (10ins) inside diameter. No dimension of hanging baskets or containers should exceed 35cms (14ins). 6. The Show Manager reserves the right to relocate exhibits in order to accommodate and display all entries to the mutual benefit of exhibitors, and enjoyment of the viewing public. Every effort will be made to maintain the aspect of exhibits as originally arranged by the exhibitor. No responsibility can be accepted for the security or condition of exhibits, containers, or accessories. 7. Exhibits in Sections 1 to 5, must have been grown by the exhibitor, and must have been in his, or her, own possession for at least two months prior to the show. The Show Manager may challenge any exhibit which they think may not have been grown by the exhibitor. 8. Judging will take place between 8.00am and 9.45am. Where applicable Judging shall conform to the RHS show Handbook and judges' decisions shall be final in all cases. 9. At the judge s discretion, any prize may be withheld, or modified, if the exhibit is considered not to meet the standard appropriate to the prize offered. Refer to General Rules for All Competitors opposite. 2. No backing will be provided. Competitors may supply their own if desired. There is no height restriction and the approximate depth is 70cms. 3. With the exception of "Miniature", and "Petite" Classes, and classes otherwise specified, no Floral Art exhibits may be arranged outwith the Show hall. 4. Floral Art classes shall be judged under N.A.F.A.S. competition manual 2nd edition A copy of this is available for viewing from the Floral Art Committee. The judge s decision shall be final in all cases. 5. An exhibit is composed of natural plant material with or without accessories contained within a space as specified. Plant material should predominate in all exhibits unless otherwise stated. All fresh plant material must be in water or water retaining material apart from the permitted exceptions. 6. Reference to less experienced flower arrangers means those who have not entered the show before or those who have not won in any class for the previous two years. 7. All entries must be on the Official Entry Form by Wednesday 27 August NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE DEADLINE AS SPACES HAVE TO BE ALLOCATED AND MEASURED BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF COMPETITORS. 4 A. Prize Money: PRIZES Prize money may be collected at the Entry Table at the Show between pm. Any prize monies not collected will be gratefully accepted as donations to Society funds. Prize money to be awarded per class shall be: B. Additional Prizes 1 st 2 nd 3 rd p The National Vegetable Society Medal will be awarded for: Best Vegetable Exhibit in Show Special Class Kitchen Garden Collection Class 88 A collection of garden vegetables for kitchen use (salads and herbs are permitted) in a 24 inch x 18 inch (60cm x 45cm) flat area. Trays no more than 1 inch deep are permitted The class will be judged for: Suitability for kitchen use - 40 points Quality, cleanliness and freshness - 40 points Presentation - 20 points Prizes 1 st , 2nd , 3rd C. VEGETABLES 1. Do not use oil to clean vegetables. HINTS TO EXHIBITORS 2. Beetroot - select medium size, matching for shape. Soak and sponge clean. 3. Carrots - exhibits should have good colour, with no green shoulders, be well shaped and matched for size. Leave about 5cms (2ins) of leaf stalk. Soak and sponge clean. 4. Onions - select exhibits of good evenly matched shape, with good colour and well ripened skin. Bulbs should be firm round the neck. Tops should be shortened and tied, and roots removed. 5. Parsnips - similar to carrots. Wash carefully. 6. Peas - select pods which are well filled and evenly shaped. Peas should not rattle when pods are shaken. 7. Potatoes - select firm medium potatoes matched for size and shape, with shallow eyes and clear unblemished skin. Wash carefully but do not polish. 8. Tomatoes - select firm well coloured tomatoes matched for size and shape. Exhibit with stalks attached and displayed on plate with those uppermost. It is permissible to use leaves or fern on the plate to improve the presentation. D. FRUIT 1. Select fruit which is ripe but firm in texture, which has good colour and is matched for size and shape. 2. Fruit displayed on paper plates may be enhanced by the use of leaves or fern. 5 A. CUT FLOWERS HINTS TO EXHIBITORS 1. All flowers should be shown when they are at the peak of their flowering, and not looking tired. 2. Pull a day early and immerse the stems in water up to and almost touching the flower. This makes certain that the stems are fully charged with water, and that no "flagging" takes place. 3. Present the vase so that as much flower as possible can be seen by the judge. 4. Never crowd a vase by gripping the stems together. When showing a number of vases together give them space so that they can be seen. 6. Remove all blemished and damaged petals and leaves. B. POT PLANTS 1. Show in the correct sized pot - See General Rules 2. Ensure pots are in good condition and thoroughly washed 3. Pot plants are judged on the quality of their foliage as well as flowers 4. Use stakes to show plants to their best advantage, but ensure stakes are hidden as much as possible. 5. Exhibitors of "ferns" are particularly reminded that "Asparagus Plumosis" and "Asparagus Densiflorus", commonly referred to Asparagus Ferns are not in fact ferns and should not be entered in fern specific classes. They may of course be entered in other foliage plant classes.
