2 CONFERENCE RECORD BOULDER VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT BCSIS / HIGH PEAKS ELEMENTARY RENOVATIONS October 04, 2016 Page 2 DISCUSSION A. Kiffany Lychock gave an overview of the 2014 BVSD Bond scope for innovation. 1. Innovation funding is for creating spaces based on the Learning Community model. Kiffany explained the BVSD Innovation Guiding Principles as: a. Learning is founded in inquiry. b. Learning fosters a culture of curiosity and risk taking. c. Mastery of learning is demonstrated in multiple ways. d. Learning is a social process. e. Learning is powerful when students create solutions to authentic challenges that impact their local, national or global community. f. Learning is personalized and learner led. 2. District protocol is for elementary schools to receive $200,000 per campus. Jeannie Tynecki questioned why the BCSIS/High Peaks campus only receives $200,000 when there are two elementary school programs being housed. The Facility serves 631 students. Other elementary school facilities serve half as many children and are receiving the same $200,000. Jeannie and Phil Katsampes will petition District Administration to provide $200,000 for each school program. 3. Kiffany explained the process for securing innovation funding requires review and approval of the plan by a District Admin team and has a few stipulations. a. The proposals come from the school leadership. b. Stakeholders are to be involved in the process and may do so through the DAT or in a separate Innovation Committee that could include DAT members and other teachers. c. The funding must be spent on the physical building, FFE or in technology. d. Project plans should be submitted by the Winter Break in order to process approvals, receive bids, coordinate vendors, order furniture, complete installation, etc. before the start of the next school year. 4. Kiffany cited Dr. David Thornburg s observations on ways of learning that people occupy four types of learning spaces: a. The Campfire (learning from an expert) b. The Watering Hole (conversational learning from peers) c. The Cave (introspective learning) and d. Life (learning by doing) 5. Several examples of new BVSD innovation projects were presented. a. Some schools replaced furniture throughout. Kinetic, flexible, moveable furniture examples were shown. Desk/table tops can come with marker surfaces. b. Cafeterias can be created as less institutional feeling and more café-like. c. Maker-spaces (or mini-maker-spaces for elementary) provide hands-on creative ways to design, build and experiment with appropriate technology, tools, furniture, work areas and materials. They are age-appropriate and subject-targeted, such as STEM. B. Todd Kimes asked the group for any questions or comments about the DAT1 Conference Record. There were none. Todd also reviewed high priority issues from DAT1 that are not on the Project Requirement List: 1. The group s desire to add air conditioning in the building; The design team s mechanical engineer had provided a rough estimate that to put cooling into just the classrooms in the academic wings would cost well over $1M, better than 20% of the total project budget. The District has limited the deferred maintenance mechanical scope and funding to replacing existing components. The design team will work within the district parameters to improve classroom ventilation, air quality and occupant comfort. 2. In lieu of just replacing sink counters in two of the multiple accommodation toilet rooms, the group indicated a high desire to remodel the 1960 s vintage toilet rooms that are in bad condition. This is beyond the defined scope, however once the CM/GC is on board the design team can have them F:\General\PROJECTS\ High Peaks BCSIS Renovations\14 Program Plan\DAT\DAT 2\DAT2 CR PM.doc

3 CONFERENCE RECORD BOULDER VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT BCSIS / HIGH PEAKS ELEMENTARY RENOVATIONS October 04, 2016 Page 3 provide a conceptual price to remodeling the toilet cluster near the library, the only vintage toilets with enough footprint area to possibly bring up to current accessibility code. Another option is to keep the same toilet room configuration and just re-finish the rooms with new flooring, wall surfaces, toilet partitions (already in the scope), etc. Though it cannot be guaranteed in this schematic design phase that the work will be done, if the schematic construction cost estimate from the Contractor is within the ballpark of the budget, toilet room remodeling and/or refinishing can be documented as bid alternates, to be considered for acceptance if the final construction base bid comes in below budget. C. The group reviewed and prioritized green items on the Requirement List pertaining to elements of building design, with green site items to be covered at a later date. Priority ranges from 1 (highest) to 4 (lowest) of importance in the event the CM/GC team member estimates budget constraints won t fund all scope items. (See attached) D. Expanded discussion occurred around programming for kindergarten and preschool classrooms. Todd explained the District s directive for Kindergarten and Preschool at this site. 1. The Requirement List Spreadsheet includes Provide Adequate Space for Full-Day Kindergarten and Provide Adequate Space for Preschool. Per the District, the project is to provide: a. Two full-day kindergarten classrooms, one for each school b. Two preschool classrooms with associated toilets facilities, office, storage, etc. 2. Each elementary school program currently has one half-day kindergarten classroom but no fullday K classrooms. There is one preschool classroom in the building and it lacks dedicated toilet facilities. All existing rooms are currently assigned a use, and while spaces may be re-assigned and/or remodeled, the project is heading toward building addition(s) to fulfill the Bond Program requirements. Location of a preschool suite (classrooms, toilets, teacher work space, etc.) needs to be considered with a safe parent drop-off facility, a Requirement List item. It was questioned whether one AM/PM preschool classroom would be sufficient for this site. District Admin will need to confirm if this is acceptable. It was noted that half-day and full-day K within each elementary school program should be adjacent to each other, and best if located with the rest of the core elementary 1-5 classrooms. E. The next DAT meeting is set for Wednesday, October 12, at 2:15 P.M. in the BCSIS/HP library. Assignments: Prepare for continued Requirement List discussion focusing on DAT design priority items in the green category, particularly building programming elements.
