2 SEDLESCOMBE AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY The society holds three shows a year Spring, Summer and Autumn. Entries are accepted from members and non-members. 3 SHOW RULES 1. All exhibits must be the property of the exhibitor and, except for the flower arrangement classes, plants and plant produce must have been grown by the exhibitor. In cases of dispute, the Show Committee reserves the right to visit, by prior arrangement, growing sites from which exhibits have been taken. 2. Entry forms for exhibiting at all Shows should be returned to the Show Secretary not later than the Tuesday preceding the date of the Shows. 3. Late entries will be accepted only at the Show Secretary s discretion. 4. All Shows are open to both members and non-members. No fees for exhibiting are payable at any of the Shows. 5. No exhibitor may enter more than one exhibit in any one Class. 6. The kind of vegetable or fruit exhibited must be listed in the Horticultural Show Handbook of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) unless the class description states otherwise. Exhibitors wishing to verify the eligibility of an entry should contact the Show Secretary. 7. Special show vases are provided for exhibitors entering the Cut Flowers and Foliage Classes for all Shows and these should be used unless otherwise stated in the Schedule. 8. Special clear plastic domes are provided for the use of exhibitors entering the Domestic Classes to protect uncovered food dishes. If the domes are inappropriate for the exhibit then cling film or other protective wrapping must be used. 9. Use clear bottles and flanged corks or screw tops for exhibits in the Wine Classes and clear, green or amber bottles with removable tops in the Beer Class. 10. Disqualification from a class will result if a specified number of items in the class description and any restrictions such as space and pot size are not adhered to. 11. Exhibits must be staged on the morning of each Show, between 8.00 and a.m. after which the venue will be cleared of all persons not involved with judging. Class Cards will be available for collection and these must be placed with the Exhibitor s name face down at the appropriate exhibit. 12. For the convenience of exhibitors who cannot attend at the correct time to stage their entries, the exhibits, marked with the owner s name and Class number, may be given beforehand to the Show Secretary for staging. 13. Judging at all Shows will be guided by the rules of the RHS, The National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS) and The National Federation of Women s Institutes (NFWI). All prizes are awarded at the discretion of the judges whose decision is final. The judges have the power to withhold any award in any Class in which the entries are not judged to be up to the required standard. Special prizes may be awarded at the discretion of the Show Team. 14. Points are awarded on the following basis. 1st Prize - 3 points 2nd Prize - 2 points 3rd Prize - 1 point Highly Commended - 1/2 point Certain classes may attract double or triple points. Such classes will be clearly labelled in the show schedules. 15. Prize money is awarded only in respect of the Young Gardeners Classes, when 50p is given for each point gained. 16. Any objection must be lodged with the Show Secretary before the prize giving and be accompanied by a deposit of 50p, which will be refunded if the objection is upheld. 17. Exhibitors are required to remove their exhibits after prize giving and before 5.00 p.m. Items left on the tables after that time will be disposed of at the discretion of the Show Secretary. 18. The Society, while taking all reasonable care, will not be responsible for any loss or damage to materials used as exhibits or in the staging. 19. All trophies must be returned directly to the Show Secretary at least one month before the next holding of the Show for which it is awarded.

4 SPECIAL AWARDS In addition to the awards and prizes for each section of each show as detailed in the show schedules, the Society awards the following special awards for the entrant gaining the most points at the Spring, Summer and Autumn shows combined. The Royal Horticultural Society Banksian Medal Awarded to the exhibitor gaining most points in the horticultural classes. The RHS Medal is a premier horticultural award. Points gained in floral art, domestic, handicraft and photographic classes do not count towards the award. The winner may not receive the award again in the following two years WINNER Darren Johnson The Wilson Perpetual Challenge Cup Awarded for the most points gained in all classes WINNER Darren Johnson The Guy Perpetual Challenge Cup for Young Gardeners Awarded for the most points in the Young Gardeners Classes WINNER Eleanor Carpenter The Platinum Anniversary Cup Awarded to the Member attaining the most points from entries in the signature classes of each section. Entries not necessary in every signature class or every show WINNER Darren Johnson The Maureen Baker Cup Intended to encourage exhibitors with limited experience in flower arranging. Awarded to the exhibitor who has gained a first prize in the appropriate class and obtained the most points for the three Shows combined. The award is not open to those who have previously been awarded the trophy or have obtained a first in other Floral Art Classes in previous years WINNER not awarded These awards will be presented at the Annual General Meeting.

8 Mandatory Recipe Stilton and Walnut Bread Spring 2017 Method: Ingredients: 1. Add flour, butter and 240ml of water into a bowl. Add salt to one side, yeast to the other. Mix together with fingers, adding remaining water a little at time to pick up flour from sides. 2. When this rough dough is soft but soggy, tip onto olive oil covered surface and knead for 5-10 mins. 3. Leave to double in size. 4. Add Stilton and walnuts, work in well, and then divide mixture into two. 5. Roll each piece into a 30cm sausage. 6. Twist the two together and place on lined baking tray 7. Leave to prove for 1 hour inside a plastic bag 8. Dust with flour and bake at C for 30mins 500g strong white bread flour 10g salt 10g instant yeast 30g unsalted butter 320ml cool water olive oil for kneading 200g Stilton, crumbled 150g walnuts SECTION D: FLORAL ART Niche spaces are provided for Classes D1, D3 & D4. Unless otherwise stated maximum exhibit dimensions are 60cm wide by 45 cm deep. No restriction on height. D1 Good Morning Britain. An exhibit. D2 Wonderland. A Petite exhibit. Maximum size: 25 cm for any dimension except the diagonal. Open tabling. D3 When We Were Young. An exhibit. D4 Take 5. White flowers only. An exhibit. For exhibitors with limited experience. Entrants are asked to lay out a place setting appropriate to the theme with cutlery and crockery and using items of their choice but to include samples from at least four of the Domestic Classes. Entries will be judged on overall presentation and the same criteria as for the Domestic Classes. Preserves E2 Pickled vegetable, any type (onion, gherkin, cucumber, etc.). E3 Jam, any type, one jar. Method: Mandatory Recipe Ingredients: Love Heart Biscuits 1. Blitz almonds, flour & salt until finely ground. Mixin icing sugar thoroughly. Mix-in butter cubes until resembles coarse sand. Add egg yolks and mix into a firm dough. 2. Roll out dough to thickness of a pound coin. 3. Cut out heart shapes - all of one larger size, then stamp out the middle of half with a smaller heart cutter. 4. Bake biscuits at C for about 12 minutes. 5. Put raspberries, cornflour and caster sugar in pan and stir over medium heat until fruit juices run, then boil and simmer for 2 minutes. Leave to cool in a bowl. 6. Spread filling over full shapes, then top with cut-out shape and dust with icing sugar. Biscuit: 100g unblanched almonds 200g plain flour 80g icing sugar pinch of salt 125g unsalted buter, diced 3 large egg yolks Filling: 200g raspberries 2 tsp cornflour 3 tbsp caster sugar icing sugar for dusting Page 5

26 Method: Mandatory Recipe Pumpkin Seed Sticks Autumn 2017 Ingredients: 1. Mix the flours, salt and yeast with 250ml of the water, then add remaining water while mixing. 2. Add pumpkin seeds when dough mixture has formed. 3. Leave dough to double in size in a bowl covered in a tea towel. 4. Tip dough onto lightly floured surface and fold in on itself repeatedly until dough is smooth. 5. Divide into 10 pieces and roll each stick about 30cm long. Brush with water and poppy seeds. 6. Lay sticks on lined baking trays scattered with poppy seeds. Leave to prove for an hour/doubled in size in a plastic bag. 7. Bake for mins at 22 0 C until crisp and golden. 100g strong white bread flour 200g strong wholemeal bread flour 200g malted bread flour 10g salt 10g instant yeast 30g unsalted butter, soft 340ml cool water 150g pumpkin seeds 50g poppy seeds AN AUTUMN SHOW COMPETITION FOR THE FAMILY IT S A PANTOMIME - OH YES IT IS! Create a pantomime scene using garden and recycled material. The competition has to be entered jointly by a minimum of one adult and one person under 15 years of age. More than one exhibit can be entered from a group of family members provided no member enters more than once. The winning group will be awarded the Ferguson Cup and receive a Garden Token to the value of 10. The competition does not qualify for points towards other Society awards. Method: Mandatory Recipe Malt Loaf Ingredients: 1. Soak weetabix, fruit and sugar in milk overnight 2. Mix egg and fruit mixture together 3. Sift flour and spice and mix thoroughly into mixture 4. Put into a 2lb loaf tin and cook for 1¼ hours at gas mark 3 / C 5. Loaf should not be cooked through - intended to be slightly gooey in middle (Suitable for freezing) 225g Muscavado or dark brown sugar 2 Weetabix 225g Sultanas 280ml milk 225g self-raising flour 1 teaspoon mixed spice 1 egg Page 6
