5 Operating Your Washer To obtain the best washing resuts, you must operate your washer propery. This section gives you this information. NOTE: Before using your washer, remove the consumer Features Guide from your washer and pace it with your Use and Care Guide. Starting Your Washer 1. Add measured detergent to the washer. Then pace a sorted oad of cothes in the washer (see page 12). Sort and oad cothes as described on page 12. If desired, you may aso add coor-safe a-fabric beach or extra detergent for the Super Wash cyce. 2. (OPTIONAL STEP) If desired, add measured iquid chorine beach to the iquid beach dispenser (see page 10). Use ony iquid chorine beach in the beach dispenser. For optima brightening and beaching, iquid chorine beach is automaticay diuted and dispensed in the ast few minutes of the wash cyce. (OPTIONAL STEP) If desired, add measured fabric softener to the fabrk softener dispenser (see page 10). The fabric softener dispenser automaticay diutes and reeases the fabric softener at the proper time in the rinse cyce.. Water rinses the dispenser so cogging does not occur. Cose the washer id. Turn the Load Size Seector to the setting that corresponds to the size of the wash oad and the type of fabrk being washed.. Seect any one of five oad sizes: Extra Sma, Sma, Medium, Large, or Extra Large. To change the oad size setting after the washer has started to fi, turn the Seector to the desired new setting. See pages 12-3 for oading tips. 5

6 6. Turn the Water Temperature Seector to the desired Wash Rinse temperature. Match the water temperature with the type of fabric and sois being washed. The top temperature on the Seector is the wash water and the bottom temperature is the rinse water. See page 14 for water temperature guideines. 7. (OPTIONAL STEP) If desired, turn the Extra Rinse Seector to On to add an additiona rinse to the end of the wash cyce. Use the extra rinse option when using extra detergent for the Super Wash cyce or any of the foowing cyces: Norma, Permanent Press, or Deicate. The extra rinse option is not offered in the Hand Washabes cyce. If you do not desire an extra rinse, or if you are using the Hand Washabes cyce, turn the Extra Rinse Seector to off. 8. Push in and turn the Cyce Contro Knob cockwise. Stop when the indicator on the outer ring points to the number in the wash cyce you want. The numbers are minutes of wash time. The cyces are described on pages 7-8. Stopping/restarting your washer If necessary, you can stop your washer during a cyce to add more cothes. To stop the washer at any time, push in the Cyce Contro Knob. To restart the washer, cose the id (if necessary) and pu out the Cyce Contro Knob. 6

7 Seecting a cyce and time Use the information in this section to hep you make the best cyce seections for your wash oads. Each cyce is designed for different types of fabrics and soi eves. The washer pauses briefy throughout each cyce. These pauses are norma for washer operation. Refer to page 9 to hep you understand what happens during a wash cyce. Super Wash cyce The Super Wash cyce automaticay prewashes the oad and advances into the Norma cyce. (The washer does not have to be reset after the Super Wash cyce.) Use this 18-minute cyce when washing heaviy soied oads that need maximum soi remova. NOTE: For proper ceaning, use doube the amount of detergent recommended for the oad size. Norma cyce The Norma cyce features the Gente Wash System and high agitation and spin speeds to shorten drying time. Use HEAVY, 15 minutes of wash time, to cean arge oads of sturdiy constructed fabrics that are heaviy soied.. Use REGULAR, 9-12 minutes of wash time, to cean cotton and inen fabrics that are moderatey soied. Use SOFT WASH, 6 minutes of wash time, to cean cotton and inen fabrics that are ighty soied. Permanent Press cyce The Permanent Press cyce features the Gente Wash system, a coo-down rinse, and ow spin speeds to reduce wrinking. Use NORMAL, 9 minutes of wash time, to cean permanent press and some synthetic fabrics that are moderatey soied. Use LIGHT, 3 to 6 minutes of wash time, to cean permanent press and some synthetic fabrics that are ighty soied. Deicate cyce The Deicate cyce features a reduced agitation speed for gente soi remova. Low spin speeds reduce wrinking. Use NORMAL, 6 minutes of wash time, to cean deicate items and washabe knits that are moderatey soied. Use LIGHT, 3 minutes of wash time, to cean deicate items and washabe knits that are ighty soied.

8 Hand Washabes cyce The Hand Washabes cyce features brief ow speed agitation and short soaks (2 seconds On, 28 seconds Off) to gentfy cean specia-care items. Low spin speeds reduce wrinking. Use 6 minutes of wash time to cean ighty soied hand washabes. Wash sma oads. If items appear to be foating due to trapped air, stop the washer by pushing in the Cyce Contro Knob. Push items down into the water. Restart the washer. See Hand Washabes on page 15 for more information. Using Rinse and Spin NOTE: An Extra Rinse option is avaiabe in a cyces except Hand Washabes (see paw 6). When using extra detergent for heaviy soied cothes, or washing specia-care items, you may want an extra rinse and spin. 1. Push in the Cyce Contro Knob and turn cockwise to RINSE, as iustrated. 2. Pu out the Cyce Contro Knob. The washer fis to seected oad size, agitates, drains, and spins. Using Drain and Spin A drain and spin may hep shorten drying times for some heavy fabrics or specia-care items by removing excess water. 1. Push in the Cyce Contro Knob and turn cockwise to SPIN, as iustrated. 2. Pu out the Cyce Contro Knob. The washer drains, then spins. 8

9 What happens in each cyce When the Cyce Contro Knob is set to a number and pued out, the washer fis (to the seected oad size) before agitation and timing start. The washer wi begin agitating immediatey after fiing; agitation can occur with the washer id up or down. After agitation starts, the Cyce Contro Knob turns cockwise unti it points to an OFF area and the cyce ends. The washer pauses briefy throughout each cyce. These pauses are norma for washer operation. NOTE: A Gente Wash system heps protect your fabrics by reducing wash agitation speed during the ast few minutes of wash agitation in the Norma and Permanent Press cyces. During agitation, wash and rinse water passes over the fiter, separating the int from the water. The int is then spun away from the fiter and out of the system during the spin part of the cyce. 10 Using iquid chorine beach dispenser Aways measure iquid chorine beach. Do not guess. Never use more than 1 cup (250 ml) for a fu oad. Use ess with ower water eve settings. Foow manufacturer s directions for safe use. Use a cup with a pouring spout to avoid spiing. 1. Load the washer. 2. Pour measured chorine beach carefuy into the dispenser. Do not et beach spash, drip, or run down into washer basket. Undiuted beach wi damage any fabric it touches. 3. Start the washer. Beach wi be diuted automaticay during wash part of cyce. NOTE: Do not use this dispenser to add powdered chorine or a-fabric beach to your wash oad. The dispenser is for iquid chorine beach use ony. Using the fabric softener dispenser 1. Add detergent and oad cothes in the basket. 2. Pour iquid fabric softener into the dispenser using the amount recommended on the package. Avoid dripping or spiing any fabric softener on the oad. 3. Diute fabric softener with warm water. Fi dispenser with warm water unti iquid reaches the opening. 4. Start the washer. Diuted fabric softener wi be added to the oad during the fina rinse. NOTE: Do not stop the washer before the rinse part of the cyce begins. Staining can occur. 5. Fush dispenser periodicay with warm water. NOTE: Do not wash cothes with this dispenser removed. Do not add detergent or beach to dispenser. The dispenser is for iquid fabric softener use ony. 10

11 Caring for Your Washer Proper care of your washer can extend its ife. This section expains how to care for your washer propery and safey. Ceaning your washer Exterior Wipe up detergent, beach, and other spis with a soft, damp coth or sponge as they occur. Occasionay wipe the outside of the washer to keep it ooking ike new. Do not put sharp or meta objects in your washer. They can damage the finish. Check a pockets for pins, cips, money, bots, nuts, etc. Do not ay these objects on your washer after emptying pockets. Interior Cean interior with 1 cup (250 ml) of chorine beach mixed with 2 cups (500 ml) of detergent. Run washer through a compete cyce using hot water. Repeat process if necessary. NOTE: Remove hard water deposits using ceaners abeed as washer safe ony. Winter storage or moving care Insta and store your washer where it wi not freeze. Because some water may stay in the hoses, freezing can damage your washer. If storing or moving your washer during freezing weather, winterize it. To winterize washer: To use washer again: 1. Shut off both water faucets. 1. Fush water pipes and hoses. 2. Disconnect and drain water inet hoses. 2. Reconnect water inet hoses. 3. Put 1 quart (1L) of R.V.-type antifreeze in 3. 12 Laundry Tips This section reviews proper aundering techniques and gives you additiona washing information. Preparing cothes for washing Cose zippers, snaps, and hooks to avoid q snagging other items. Remove pins, buckes, and other hard objects to avoid 0 scratching the washer interior. Remove nonwashabe trim and ornaments. Empty pockets and turn them inside out. Turn down cuffs, brush away int and dirt. Sorting Separate heaviy-soied items from ightysoied ones, even if they woud normay be washed together. Separate int givers (towes, chenie) from int takers (corduroy, synthetics, permanent Loading Drop items into washer oosey. Fi to the top of the basket, but do not wrap items around the agitator. Items shoud move easiy through wash water for best Ia ceaning and wrinke-free resuts. Items shoud sink and reappear ater. Load washer propery and seect correct oad size setting. Overoading or packing the machine, and seecting a setting too sma for the wash oad can: - cause poor ceaning. - increase wrinking. - create excessive int. - wear out items faster (because of piing). Turn synthetic knits inside out to avoid piing. Tie strings and sashes so they wi not tange. Mend tears, oose hems, and seams. Treat spots and stains. (See Removing Stains on pages 17-9.) Stained or wet garments shoud be washed prompty for best resuts. press). When possibe, turn int givers inside out. Separate dark coors from ight coors, coorfast items from noncoorfast items. Sort by fabric and construction (sturdy cottons, knits, deicate items). Load by the amount of space items take up, not by their weight. Mix arge and sma items in each oad. Load eveny to maintain washer baance. 14 Checking hot water temperature Your hot water shoud be 54 C (130 F) or above. If you do not know your hot water temperature, you can check it easiy. You may need to raise the temperature of your water heater. To check your hot water: 1. Fi a pan with the hottest water avaiabe from the faucet that fis your washer. NOTE: If you do not have a faucet at your washer site, coect the water from the faucet cosest to your washer. 2. Pace a candy thermometer or cooking thermometer in the water to check the temperature. NOTE: In wash water temperatures coder than 21 C (70 F) detergents do not dissove we. Aso, sois may be difficut to remove, and some fabrics may retain wear wrinkes and may have increased piing. Saving energy Use warm or cod wash water for most oads. Use hot water ony when washing heavy, greasy sois or whites. Use cod rinses. Wash fu oads. * Use ower water eves when washing sma oads. Water hardness Many poor washing resuts can be traced to the hardness of the wash water. To check your water hardness: City water - ask the city water company. We water - ask the oca water authority. Ask for the minera content in grains/gaon or parts/miion. If your water is more than 8 grains/gaon or more than 153 parts/ miion, you shoud consider: Instaing a water softener. Using more detergent. Using a packaged water conditioner. Not using soap.. Avoid rewashing. Use enough detergent. Pretreat stains or heavy sois. Use the cyces and wash times recommended for the fabric and soi. Use your washer during off-peak hoursusuay eary morning and ate evening. (Ask your power company.) 14

15 Washing specia care items Most garments and househod texties have care abes with aundering instructions. Aways foow care abe directions when they are avaabe. Beow are genera washing instructions for some specia washabes. ITEM Bankets (eectric or wooen) Curtains, drapes, sipcovers CARE INSTRUCTIONS Pretreat spots and stains. Seect water temperature, cyce, and time according to the type of banket being washed. Use of the Extra Rinse feature may be necessary. Check care abe to see if manufacturer recommends machine washing. Wash sma oads. Crowding may cause wrinking. Repace sipcovers whie sti sighty damp. They wi dry to fit tighty. NOTE: Sun-damaged curtains and draperies wi tear whether hand or machine washed. Diapers When using chorine beach for soaking, add extra detergent to the oad. Avoid overuse of fabric softeners - absorbency wi be reduced. Eastic, spandex Fame-retardant cothing Hand Washabes Eastic picks up oi from the body. Oi can damage eastic. Wash often to reduce the damage. Use warm water and sufficient detergent to remove ois. Do not use chorine beach. Items wi be ceary abeed as fame-retardant. Foow manufacturer s instructions to retain fame-retardant quaities. Garments are abeed Hand Wash because: The fiber or construction may be sensitive to agitation. The fabric contains sensitive dyes that may beed. Propery sort and then use your Hand Washabes cyce for gente washing. Foow care abe directions for drying. Items that may shrink shoukf be dried fat. 16 1 ITEM CARE INSTRUCTIONS I Knits Knits are comfortabe to wear because they stretch. However, this means that knits are more ikey to be stretched and damaged when washed (especiay buky knits). Knits made of synthetic fabrics such as poyester, nyon, and acryic tend to keep their origina shape more than a knit made of cotton or ramie. Piows, stuffed Washing feather piows is not recommended uness they wi be toys dried in a dryer. Pastic, rubber items Treat as deicate items. Wash in warm water. Wash sma items in a mesh bag. Quits, bedspreads Do not wash cotton-fied comforters uness they are quited or stitched. Tucked cotton batting tends to sip and become umpy. Use of the Extra Rinse feature mav be necessarv. Scatter rugs Shake or vacuum rugs to remove oose dirt. Wash more than one rug at a time. If washing ony one rug, add bath towes to baance the oad. Snowsuits, jackets Wash ony one or two items at a time. You may need to stop the washer occasionay to press air from the items being washed. Use of the Extra Rinse feature may be necessary. 16

17 Removing Stains Stained, heaviy-soied, or greasy items may need to be prewashed or soaked for best resuts. Soaking heps remove protein-type stains ike bood, mik, or grass. Prewashing heps oosen soi before washing. Stain remova rues. Use warm water for soaking or prewashing stained aundry. Hot water can set stains. Most stains are easier to remove when they are fresh. Od or set stains may not come out. Foow package directions for pretreatment products. Before treating any stain, find out what kind of stain it is, how od the stain is, what kind of fabric it is, and if the fabric is coorfast. (Check the care abe.) Washing and drying can set some stains. Start with cod or warm water. Hot water can set some stains. Stain remova guide STAIN Acohoic beverage TO REMOVE When beach is recommended, use a beach that is safe for the fabric. Test stain removers on an inside seam or hidden corner of the item to see if the coor is removed. Put the stained area face down on a paper towe or white coth. Appy the stain remover to the back of the stain. This forces the stain off the fabric instead of through it. Meat tenderizer or enzyme presoaks hep break down some protein stains so they are easier to remove. These stains turn brown with age, so treat immediatey. Sponge or soak fresh stains with cod water. Wash. If stain remains, soak 15 minutes in a soution of ukewarm water, iquid detergent, and a few drops of white vinegar. Rinse. Wash. Bood Rinse immediatey or soak in cod water with enzyme presoak for 30 minutes or onger. Rinse. Rub detergent into any remaining stains. Rinse. If stain remains, put a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide on stain for 3-5 minutes. Rinse thoroughy. Wash. Chewing gum Chocoate or coffee Crayon and cande wax Cream, mik, or ice cream Use ice to make gum hard. Scrape off what you can. Sponge with a nonfammabe fabric ceaner. Let dry. Wash. Sponge immediatey with a nonfammabe fabric ceaner or appy a prewash soi and stain remover. Rinse. Wash. If stain remains, appy a iquid detergent to stain or soak in warm water with an enzyme presoak. Rewash. Scrape off excess with a du knife. Pace fabric between two botters or facia tissue. Press with warm iron. Remove coor stain with nonfammabe fabric ceaner. Hand wash unti stain is gone. If fu oad is crayon stained, take to ceaners or coin-operated dry ceaning machine. Sponge with a nonfammabe fabric ceaner, or a prewash soi and stain remover. Rinse. Wash. Repeat if necessary. If stain remains, appy a few drops of iquid detergent and a few drops of ammonia. Bot dry and rinse. If stain remains, soak in an enzyme presoak. Wash. continued on next page 17

Let dry. Repeat if necessary. Wash. If stain remains, beach if safe for fabric. (India and other indeibe inks are amost impossibe to remove competey.) Iron or rust Coored or noncoorfast items: Appy emon juice and sat. Pace in the sun to dry. Rinse thoroughy. Repeat if necessary. White or coorfast items: Try a rust remover. Test first on inside seam or hem. Some rust removers are not washer safe. Foow package directions. Ketchup or Sponge immediatey with a nonfammabe fabric ceaner or appy a tomato prewash soi and stain remover. Rinse. Wash. If stain remains, appy a products iquid detergent to stain or soak in warm water with an enzyme presoak. Rewash. Lipstick Appy nonfammabe fabrii ceaner or prewash soi and stain remover. Bot with absorbent materia. Repeat if necessary. Rinse. If stain sti remains, rub with iquid detergent. Wash. 18

19 STAIN Meat juice, egg Midew TO REMOVE Scrape off excess with a du knife. Soak in cod or warm water with enzyme presoak at east 30 minutes, or treat stains with a nonfammabe fabrii ceaner. Wash. Wash in hottest water safe for fabric. If stain remains, soak in warm water and an a-fabric beach for 15 to 30 minutes. Rewash. (Od midew stains are amost impossibe to remove. Midew fungus destroys or weakens fabrics.) An aternative to beach is to treat with sat and emon juice and dry in direct sunight. Rinse and rewash. Midew may form if wet or damp aundry remains in your washer for extended periods of time. To prevent midew, prompty dry aundry after washing. Mustard Treat immediatey. Scrape off excess mustard. Sponge with a nonfammabe fabric ceaner or a prewash soi and stain remover. Rinse. Work iquid detergent and a few drops of vinegar into stain. Rinse. If stain remains, appy 3% hydrogen peroxide. Rinse and wash. Paint Hand wash paint-stained items. Water base: Treat stains whie sti wet. (These paints cannot be removed after they have dried.) Rinse in warm water to fush out paint. Sponge with a nonfammabe fabric ceaner. Rinse. Wash. Oi base: Scrape off fresh paint. Sponge with a nonfammabe fabric ceaner or treat stain with recommended thinner. Whie stain is sti wet with sovent, rub iquid detergent into it. Wash with hottest water safe for fabric. Perspiration Remove stains before ironing. Perspiration stains may weaken fabrii. Wash or sponge stain thoroughy with detergent and warm water. If perspiration has changed the coor of the fabric, use one of the foowing treatments: Fresh stains: Appy ammonia to stain. Rinse. Launder to remove ammonia odor. Od stains: Appy white vinegar to stain. Rinse. Launder to remove vinegar odor. Scorch Severe scorch cannot be removed. Wet stain with 3% hydrogen peroxide.
