5 Before Using Your Refrigerator It is important to prepare your refrigerator for use. This section tes you how to cean it, insta it, connect it to a power source, and eve it. For information on how to attach the optiona ice maker to a water suppy, see page 14, or for information on how to reverse the door swing, see page 19. Ceaning your refrigerator Removing packaging materias Remove tape and any inside abes (except the mode and seria number abe) before using the refrigerator. To remove any remaining tape or abe gue: Rub brisky with thumb. OR Appy iquid hand-dishwashing detergent to area before removing gue as described above. Do not use sharp instruments, rubbing acoho, fammabe fuids, or abrasive ceaners. These can damage the materia. See Important Safety Instructions on page 3. Instaing it propery 1. Aow %-inch (1.25 cm) space on each side and at the top of the refrigerator for ease of instaation. 2. If the hinge side of the refrigerator is to be against a wa, you might want to eave extra space so the door can be opened wider. 3. The refrigerator can be fush against the back wa. NOTE: Do not remove any permanent instruction abes inside your refrigerator. Do not remove the Tech Sheet fastened under the refrigerator at the front. Ceaning it before use After removing a packaging materias, cean your refrigerator before using it, if necessary. See ceaning instructions on page 21. 5

6 Pugging it in Fire Hazard Do not use an extension cord. Doing so can resut in death, fire, or eectrica shock. Eectrica Shock Hazard Pug into a grounded 3 prong outet. Do not remove ground prong. Do not use an adapter. Faiure to foow these instructions can resut in death or eectrica shock. Recommended Grounding Method A 115 vot, 60 Hz., AC ony 15 or 20 ampere fused and propery grounded eectrica suppy is required. It is recommended that a separate circuit serving ony this appiance be provided. Use a receptace which cannot be turned off with a switch or pu chain. Do not use an extension cord. 7 Leveing it Burn Hazard Do not touch refrigeration tubes near defrost pan. Doing so can resut in burns. Your refrigerator has 2 front eveing screws - 1 on the right and 1 on the eft. To adjust 1 or both of these, foow the directions beow. 1. Remove base grie. (See page 16.) 2. To raise front, turn screw cockwise. 3. To ower front, turn screw countercockwise. 4. Check with eve. 5. 8 Using Your Refrigerator To obtain the best possibe resuts from your refrigerator, it is important that you operate it propery. This section tes you how to set the contros, remove and adjust some of the features in your refrigerator, and how to save energy. Setting the contros Contros for the refrigerator and freezer are in the refrigerator. When you pug in the refrigerator for the first time: 1. Set the Refrigerator Contro to 4 (Recommended Setting). Refrigerator Contro settings range from 1 (warmest) to 8 (codest). I REFRIGERATOR 2. Set the Freezer Contro to C (Recommended Setting). Freezer Contro settings range from A (warmest) to D (codest). 3. Give the refrigerator time to coo down competey before adding food. This may take severa hours. The settings indicated above shoud be correct for norma, househod refrigerator usage. The contros are set correcty when mik or juice is as cod as you ike and when ice cream is firm. If you need to adjust these settings, see Changing the contro settings on page 9. 4 WARMER CI FREEZER C COLDER b Exterior moisture contro The Exterior Moisture Contro operates eectric heaters around the door openings. These heaters hep keep moisture from forming on the outside of the refrigerator cabinet. Use the OFF setting when humidity is ow. Use the ON setting if moisture forms on the outside of the refrigerator cabinet. 1 EXTERIOR MOISTURE CONTROL OFF m ON 8

9 Changing the contro settings If you need to adjust temperatures in the refrigerator or freezer, use the settings isted in the chart beow as a guide. If you have questions, ca our Consumer Assistance Center teephone number, Adjust the Refrigerator Contro first. Wait at east 24 hours between adjustments. Then adjust the Freezer Contro if needed. 10 Removing the drop-in door trim (on some modes) To remove the trim piece: 1. Remove a items from the shef. 2. Pu straight up on the trim piece at each end. To repace the trim piece: 1. Locate each end of the trim piece above the trim pocket opening. 2. Push the trim piece straight down unti it stops. 3. Repace items on the shef. Adjusting the door bins To remove door bins: 1. Lift bin up. 2. Pu bin straight out. To repace door bins: 1. Side bin in above desired support button. 2. Push down unti it stops. 10

11 Adjusting the cantiever refrigerator sheves Adjust the sheves to match the way you use your refrigerator. Gass sheves are strong enough to hod bottes, mik, and other heavy food items. To remove a shef: 1. Remove items from shef. 2. Tit shef up at front. 3. Lift shef at back. 4. Pu shef straight out. To repace a shef: 1. Guide the rear shef hooks into the sots in the shef supports on the back iner wa. 2. Tit front of shef up unti hooks drop into sots. 3. Lower front of shef to a eve position. NOTE: Gass sheves are heavy. Hande them carefuy. Removing the meat drawer and cover To remove the meat drawer: 1. Side meat drawer out to the stop. 2. Lift front of meat drawer and side meat drawer out the rest of the way. 3. Repace in reverse order. To adjust the cover position: 1. Tit front of cover up. 2. Lift back of cover. 3. Pu cover straight out. To repace the cover: 1. Guide the cover s rear hooks into the sots in the shef supports on cabinet wa. 2. Tit cover up at front unti the hooks drop into sots. 3. Lower front of cover to a eve position. Pu out to the stop, ift the front, and pu again. 11

12 Removing the crispers and crisper cover To remove the crispers: 1. Side crisper straight out to the stop. 2. Lift the front and side out the rest of the way. 3. Repace in reverse order. Pu out to the stop, ift the front and pu again. To remove the cover: 1. Push up the gass insert from the bottom, then side out with both hands. 2. Lift front of cover frame. 3. Lift cover frame up and out. To repace the cover: 1. Fit back of cover frame into notch supports on back wa of refrigerator, then ower the front into pace. 2. Make sure the front cover meta support is in the notches in the sides of the iner. NOTE: If the support is not positioned propery, the doors may not cose a the way. 3. Side back of gass insert into pace, then ower front. Removing the freezer shef Remove the freezer shef for easier ceaning. To remove the shef: 1. Lift front of shef sighty. 2. Lift back of shef off supports. 3. Repace in reverse order. Remove the cover insert. Lift the cover front, then the back. NOTE: Hande gass insert with care. It coud be heavy. 12

13 Using the optiona automatic ice maker If your refrigerator has an automatic ice maker, or if you pan to add one ater, here are a few things you wi want to know. The ON/OFF ever is a wire signa arm. DOWN to make ice automaticay UP to shut off ice maker IMPORTANT: Do not turn the ice maker ON unti it is connected to a water suppy. Instructions for water suppy hookup are attached to the back of the refrigerator cabinet. If you remove the ice bin, raise the signa arm to the OFF position. When you repace the bin, push it a the way in and ower the signa arm to the ON position. Good water quaity is important for good ice quaity. Try to avoid connecting the ice maker to a softened water suppy. Water softener chemicas (such as sat from a mafunctioning softener) can damage the ice maker mod and ead to poor ice quaity. If a softened water suppy cannot be avoided, make sure the water softener is operating propery and is we maintained. Throw them away and make a new suppy. Foods in freezer are not wrapped propery. See Food Storage Guide on page 25. Freezer and ice bin need to be ceaned. See pages 21 and 22. Water may contain mineras (such as sufur). A fiter may be required to remove them. 13

14 Attaching the optiona ice maker water suppy Read a directions carefuy before you begin. to a.~ Eectrica Shock Hazard Unpug the refrigerator before instaing ice maker. Faiure to do so can resut in death or eectrica shock. IMPORTANT: Use copper tubing ony and check for eaks. Insta ice maker tubing in areas where temperatures are above freezing. Toos required: Standard screwdriver 7/16-inch and %-inch open-end wrenches or two adjustabe wrenches X-inch nut driver X-inch dri bit Hand dri or eectric dri (propery grounded) NOTE: Your appiance deaer has a kit avaiabe with a %-inch sadde-type shut-off vave, a union, and copper tubing. Before purchasing, make sure a sadde-type vave compies with your oca pumbing codes. Do not use a piercing-type or %-inch sadde vave which reduces water fow and cogs more easiy. Cod water suppy The ice maker water vave contains a fow washer which is used as a water pressure reguator. The ice maker needs to be connected to a cod water ine with water pressure imitations of psi. If a probem occurs, ca your utiity company. IMPORTANT: It may take up to 24 hours for your ice maker to begin producing ice. If operating the refrigerator before instaing the water connection, turn ice maker to the OFF position to prevent operation without water. A instaations must be in accordance with oca pumbing code requirements. Instaation is not warranted by refrigerator or ice maker manufacturer. 14

15 Connecting to water ine 1. Find a M-inch to IX-inch vertica COLD water pipe near the refrigerator. NOTE: Horizonta pipe wi work, but the foowing precaution must be taken: Dri on the top side of the pipe, not the bottom. This wi hep keep water away from the dri. This aso keeps norma sediment from coecting in the vave. 2. Measure from connection on rear of refrigerator to water pipe. Add 7 feet (2.1 m) to aow for moving refrigerator for ceaning. This is the ength of X-inch O.D. copper tubing you wi need for the job (ength from connection to water pipe PLUS 7 feet [2.1 m). Be sure both ends of copper tubing are cut square. 3. Turn OFF main water suppy. Turn ON nearest faucet ong enough to cear ine of water. 4. Using a grounded dri, dri a %-inch hoe on the cod water pipe you have seected. 5. Fasten shut-off vave to cod water pipe with pipe camp. Be sure outet end is soidy in the %-inch dried hoe in the water pipe and that washer is under the pipe camp. Tighten packing nut. Tighten the pipe camp screws carefuy and eveny so washer makes a watertight sea. Do not over-tighten or you may crush the copper tubing, especiay if soft (coied) copper tubing is used. Now you are ready to connect the copper tubing. 6. Sip compression seeve and compression nut on copper tubing as shown in diagram. Insert end of tubing into outet end squarey as far as it wi go. Screw compression nut onto outet end with adjustabe wrench. Do not overtighten. Turn ON main water suppy and fush out tubing unti water is cear. Turn OFF shutoff vave on the water pipe. Coi copper tubina. Vertica cod X-inch O.D. water pipe copper tubing Washer (ength from Comp;ession seeve water pipe pus 7 Q@+p&& Compression nut/ = TO REFRIGERATOR + Some modes may not feature this second compression nut and seeve. 15

16 Connecting to refrigerator 1. Disconnect the tube camp on the back of the product and insert copper tubing through the camp as shown at the right. Attach the copper tube to the vave inet using a compression nut and seeve as shown. Tighten the compression nut. Do not overtighten. Reattach the tube camp and tube to the back of the cabinet. Move to step Turn shut-off vave ON. CHECK FOR LEAKS. TIGHTEN ANY CONNECTIONS (INCLUDING CONNECTIONS AT THE VALVE) OR NUTS THAT LEAK. 3. The ice maker is equipped with a buit-in water strainer. If oca water conditions require periodic ceaning or a we is your source of water suppy, a second water strainer shoud be instaed in the X-inch water ine. Obtain a water strainer from your nearest appiance deaer. Insta at either tube connection. 4. Reconnect eectrica suppy to refrigerator. To remove the grie: 1. Open the refrigerator door. 2. Pu base grie forward to reease the support tabs from the meta cips. 3. Do not remove Tech Sheet fastened behind the grie. Condenser cois 16

17 To repace the grie: 1. Line up grie support tabs with meta cips. 2. Push firmy to snap into pace. 3. Cose the refrigerator door. See ceaning instructions for defrost pan and condenser cois on page 22. Changing the ight bubs Eectrica Shock Hazard Unpug the refrigerator before removing a ight bub. Faiure to do so can resut or eectrica shock. in death To change the refrigerator ight: 1. Unpug the refrigerator. 2. Reach behind the Contro Pane to remove bub. 3. Repace with a 60-watt appiance bub. 4. Pug in the refrigerator. To repace the freezer ight: 1. Unpug the refrigerator. 2. Grasp the top and bottom of the ight shied. 3. Squeeze and pu Cght shied out. 4. Repace with a 25-watt appiance bub. 5. Snap ight shied into pace. 6. Pug in the refrigerator. NOTE: Not a commercia appiance bubs wi fit your refrigerator. Be sure to repace a bub with one of the same size and shape. 17

18 Understanding the sounds you may hear Your new refrigerator may make sounds that your od one didn t. Because the sounds are new to you, you might be concerned about them. Don t be. Most of the new sounds are norma. Hard surfaces ike the foor, was, and cabinets can make the sounds seem ouder. The foowing describes the kinds of sounds that might be new to you, and what may be making them. Sight hum, soft hiss You may hear the refrigerator s and moving air. fan motor Cicking or snapping sounds The thermostat makes a definite cick when the refrigerator stops running. It aso makes a sound when the refrigerator starts. The defrost timer wi cick when the defrost cyce starts. Saving energy You can hep your refrigerator use ess eectricity. Check door gaskets for a tight sea. Leve the cabinet to be sure of a good sea. Cean the condenser cois reguary. Open the door as few times as possibe. Think about what you need before you open the door. Get everything out at one time. Keep food organized so you won t have to search for what you want. Cose the door as soon as food is removed. Water sounds When the refrigerator stops running, you may hear gurging in the tubing for a few minutes after it stops. You may aso hear defrost water running into the defrost water pan. Ice maker sounds Tricking water Thud (catter of ice) You may hear buzzing (from the water vave), tricking water and the catter of ice dumped into the bin. Running sounds Your refrigerator has a high-efficiency compressor and motor. It wi run onger than oder designs. It may even seem to run most of the time. Go ahead and fi up the refrigerator but don t overcrowd it so air movement is bocked. It is a waste of eectricity to set the refrigerator and freezer to temperatures coder than they need to be. If ice cream is firm in the freezer and drinks are as cod as your famiy ikes them, that s cod enough. Make sure your refrigerator is not next to a heat source such as a range, water heater, furnace, radiator, or in direct sunight. 18

19 Reversing the door swing TOOLS NEEDED: 5As-inch hex-head socket wrench, No. 2 Phiips screwdriver, fat-head screwdriver, M-inch open-end wrench. Reversing the hinges TOP HINGE IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Before you begin, turn refrigerator OFF, unpug it, and remove any food from door sheves. Remove base grie. When removing hinges, keep doors cosed unti ready to ift free from cabinet. To remove doors, start at the top hinge and work your way down. To repace doors, start at the bottom hinge and work your way up. Line up doors so they are centered between the sides of the cabinet and parae with each other. Sea a unused openings with screws or pastic pugs. Moisture wi enter any openings.. Door sea may be adjusted by adding or removing shims to the center and bottom hinges. 21 Your refrigerator is buit to give you many years of dependabe service. However, there are a few things you can do to hep extend its product ife. This section tes you how to cean your refrigerator and what to do when going on vacation, moving, or during a power outage. Ceaning your refrigerator Both the refrigerator and freezer sections defrost automaticay. However, cean both about once a month to hep prevent odors n from buiding up. Wipe up spis Fii!ii right away. Use up any perishabes. 2. Freeze other items. 3. If your refrigerator has an automatic ice maker: Raise signa arm to OFF (up) position. Shut off water suppy to the ice maker. Long vacations If you wi be gone a month or more: 1. Remove a food from the refrigerator. 2. If your refrigerator has an automatic ice maker: Turn off the water suppy to the ice maker at east one day ahead of time. When the ast oad of ice drops, turn off the ice maker. Make sure a ice is dispensed out of the ice maker mechanism. 3. Unpug the refrigerator. Remove base grie. (See page 16.) Reach into sma opening at right edge and remove the defrost pan. Wash, rinse, and dry thoroughy. Repace defrost pan. Make sure to push it competey into the opening. Repace base grie. (See page 17.) Remove base grie. (See page 16.) Vacuum cois when dusty or dirty. Cois may need to be ceaned as often as every other month. Repace base grie. (See page 17.) 4. Cean it, rinse we, and dry. 5. Tape rubber or wood bocks to the tops of both doors to prop them open far enough for air to get in. This stops odor and mod from buiding up. To restart refrigerator, see page 8. Moving When you are moving the refrigerator to a new home: 1. If your refrigerator has an automatic ice maker: Turn off the water suppy to the ice maker at east one day ahead of time. Disconnect the water ine. After the ast oad of ice drops, ift the signa arm to the OFF (up) position. 2. Remove a food from the refrigerator. 3. Pack a frozen food in dry ice. 4. Unpug the refrigerator. 5. Cean it thoroughy. Wipe we and dry. 22

23 6. Take out a removabe parts, wrap them we, and tape them together so they don t shift and ratte. 7. Screw in the eveing rofers. 8. Tape the doors shut and tape the power suppy cord to the cabinet. When you get to your new home, put everything back and refer to page 5. Aso, if your refrigerator has an automatic ice maker, remember to reconnect the water suppy ine. Power interruptions If eectricity goes off, ca the power company. Ask how ong power wi be off. 1. 24 Food Storage Guide There is a correct way to package and store refrigerated or frozen food. To keep food fresher, onger, take the time to study these recommended steps. Storing fresh food Wrap or store food in the refrigerator in airtight and moisture-proof materia. This prevents food odor and taste transfer throughout the refrigerator. For dated products, check code date to ensure freshness. Leafy vegetabes Remove store wrapping and trim or tear off bruised and discoored areas. Wash in cod water and drain. Pace in pastic bag or pastic container and store in crisper. Vegetabes with skins (carrots, peppers) Store in crisper, pastic bags or pastic container. Fruit Wash, et dry and store in refrigerator in pastic bags or crisper. Do not wash or hu berries unti they are ready to use.
