This section gives you important information for efficient and safe use of your range. Using the surface units Contro knobs must be pushed In before turning them to a setting. They can be set anywhere between HI and OFF. Surface unit markers The soid dot in the surface unit marker shows which surface unit is turned on by that knob. Surface heating indicator ight The SURFACE HEATING Indicator Light on the contro pane wi gow when a surface unit is turned on. Burn and Fire Hazard Be sure a contro knobs are turned to OFF and a indicator ights are OFF when you are not cooking. Someone coud be burned or a fire coud start if a surface unit is accidentay eft ON.

8 Unti you get used to the settings, use the foowing as a gude. For best resuts, start cooking at the high settings; then turn the contro knob down to continue cooking. 1 SEITING 1 RECOMMENDED USE HI To start foods cooking. To bring iquids to a boi. Medium-ow To keep food cooking after starting it on a higher setting. LO To keep food warm unti ready to serve. Cookware tips There is no one brand of cooking utensi that is best for a peope. Knowing something about pan materias and construction wi hep you seect the right cooking utensis for your needs. Use ony fat-bottomed utensis that make good contact with the surface units. To check the fatness of a utensi: - Turn it over and check the bottom of the pan by pacing a ruer across it. - Rotate the ruer in a directbns. There shoud be no gaps between the pan and the ruer. NOTE: Woks, canners and teakettes with fat bottoms suitabe for use on your cooktop are now avaiabe in most houseware stores or departments. -0 The pan shoud have straight sides and a tightfiiing id. Choose medium to heavy gauge (thickness) pans that are fairy ightweight. Remember that a very heavy pan wi be even heavier when fied with food. The pan materia (meta or gass) affects how fast heat transfers from the surface unit through the pan materia and how eveny heat spreads over the pan bottom. Handes shoukf be made of a sturdy, heatresistant materia and be securey attached to the pan. I Do not eave an empty utensi, or one which has boied dry, on a hot surface unit. It can overheat and may damage the utensi or surface unit. Do not use canners, woks and speciaty utensis with rounded, war@, ridged or dented bottoms. These coud cause severe overheating which damages the utensi and/or surface unit. Product Damage Hazard ff a surface unit stays red for a ong time, the bottom of the pan is not fat enough or is too sma for the surface unit. Proonged usage of incorrect utensis for ong periods of time can resuft in damage to the surface unit, cooktop, wiring and surrounding areas. To prevent damage, use correct utensis, start cooking on HI and turn contro down to continue cooking.

9 Home canning information To protect your range: Use fat-bottomed canners for best resuts. Do not use canners with dented or ridged (porceain ename-ware) bottoms. They do not make good contact with the surface unit and cause severe overheating which damages the cooktop. For best resuts, use the argest surface unit. Aso, use a canner which can be centered over the surface unit. Large diameter canners, if not propery centered, trap heat and can cause damage to the cooktop. Do not pace canner on two surface units at the same time. Excessive heat buid-up wi damage the cooktop. Start with hot water. This reduces the time the contro is set on high. Reduce heat setting to owest position needed to keep water boiing. Keep refector bows cean for best heat refection. To proong the ife of the eements: - Prepare sma batches at a time. - Do not use eements for canning a day. Optiona canning kit The arge diameter of most water-bath or pressure canners combined with high heat settings for ong periods of time can shorten the ife of reguar surface units and cause damage to the cooktop. tf you pan to use the cooktop for canning, we recommend the instaation of a Canning Kit. Order the kit (Part No ) from your Whirpoo deaer or authorized WhirpooP service company. Positioning racks and pans For baking/roasting with one rack, the rack shoud be paced so the top of the food wi be centered in the oven. Aways eave at east 1 /2 to 2 inches (4-5 cm) between the sides of the pan and the oven was and other pans. For proper cookng, foow these gudenes for specfc foods: Ange and bundt cakes, yeast breads, frozen pies, arge roasts and turkeys-pace rack on owest eve. Casseroes, muffins, most quick breads and meats-pace rack on second or third eve from bottom. Cookies, biscuits, cakes and non-frozen piespace rack on second or third eve from bottom. When baking on two racks, arrange racks on bottom and third eve from bottom. NOTE: For recommended rack pacement when broiing, see a reiabe cookbook. Persona Injury Hazard Aways position oven rack(s) in desired ocation before turning oven on. 10 For best air circuation Hot air must circuate around the pans in the oven for even heat to reach a parts of the oven. Pace the pans so that one is not directy over the other. Aow 1X-2 inches (4-5 cm) of space around each pan and between pans and oven was. Use ony one cookie sheet in the oven at one time. Use the foowing as a guide to determine to pace the pans. One pan Pace in the center of the oven rack. Two pans Pace in opposite corners of the oven rack. where Three or four pans Pace in opposite corners on each oven rack. Stagger pans so no pan is directy over another. NOTE: Oven peeking may cause heat Loss, onger cooking times and unsatisfactory baking or roasting resuts. Use a reiabe kitchen timer to keep track of the cooking time. Using auminum foi for baking Use auminum foi to catch spiovers from pies or casseroes. Pace the foi on the oven rack beow the rack with the food. The foi shoud have the edges turned up and be about 1 inch (3 cm) arger a around than the dish hoding the food. Do not cover the entire rack with auminum foi. tt wi reduce air circuation and cause poor cooking resuts. Do not ine oven bottom or entire oven rack with foi or other iners. Poor baking wi resut. 4 Eectrica Shock and Fire Hazard Do not aow foi to touch the heating eements because it wi damage them and coud resut in shock or fire hazard. 10

11 Baking/roasting 1. Position the rack(s) propery before turning on the oven. To change rack poston, ift rack at front and pu out. For information on positioning racks, see Positioning racks and pans on page Set the Oven Seector to BAKE. 3. Set the Oven Temperature Contro Knob to the baking/roasting temperature you want. The OVEN HEATING Indicator Liiht wi come on. The oven is preheated when the OVEN HEATING Indicator Lght first goes off. NOTE: Do not preheat oven when roasting or ccddrg items such as casseroes. 4. Put food in the oven. During baking/roasting, the eements wi turn on and off to maintain the temperature setting. The OVEN HEATING Indicator Light wi turn on and off with the eements. NOTE: The top eement heps heat durng bakngroastng, but does not turn red. 5. When baking/roasting is done, turn both the Oven Seector and the Oven Temperature Contro Knob to OFF. The OVEN HEATING Indicator Light wi go off. 11

12 Adjusting the oven temperature contro Does your oven seem hotter or coder than your od oven? The temperature of your od oven may have shifted graduay without you noticing the change. Your new oven is propery adjusted to provide accurate temperatures. But, when compared to your od oven, the new design may give you different resuts. If. after using the oven for a perbd of time, you are not satisfii with the temperature settings, they can be adjusted by fobwing these steps: 1. Turn the Oven Temperature Contro Knob to ;hzv&j position. Pu knob straight off and fip. 2. Loosen the ocking screws inside the contro knob. Note the positkn of the notches. 3. To ower the temperature, hod knob hande firmy and move the tooth a notch countercockwise. Each notch equas about 5 F (2.5%). 4. To rake the temperature, hod knob hande firmy and move the tooth a notch cockwise. Each notch equas about 5OF (2.5%). ~~~~~bockng screws and repace the Broiing 1. Position the rack propery before turning on the oven. The oven rack shoud be positioned so that the surface of the food is at east 3 inches (7.4 cm) away from the broi eement. See Positioning racks and pans on page Put the broier pan and food on the rack. 3. Cbse the door to the Broi Stop position (open about 4 inches [ 10.2 cm]). The door wi stay open by itsef. 4. Set the Oven Seector and Oven Temperature Contro Knob to BROIL The OVEN HEATING Indicator Lght wi come on. NOTE: Do not preheat oven when broiing. 5. When broiing is done, turn both the Oven Seector and Oven Temperature Contro Knob to OFF. The OVEN HEATING Indicator Light wi go off. 12

13 Custom broi tf food is cooking too fast, turn the Oven Temperature Contro Knob counterdockwse unti the OVEN HEATING Indicator Light goes off. If you want the food to broi sower from the start, set the Oven Temperature Contro Knob between 170 F and 325 F (77% and 162.7%). These temperature settings abw the broi heating eement to cyce and to sow cooking. The bwer the temperature, the sower the cooking. Fiih and chicken are some foods that may cook better if you use ower broiing temperatures. The Oven Seector must be on BROIL for a broiing temperatures. NOTE: The oven door must be party open whenever the oven is being used to broi. Leaving the door open aows the oven to maintain proper temperatures. Broiing tips Use the broier pan and grid for broiing. They are designed to drain excess iquid and fat away from the cocking surface to hep prevent spatter. smoke or fire. Refer to a broiing chart in a reiabe cookbook for correct broiing times.. After broiing, remove the broier pan from the oven when you remove the food. Drippings wi bake on the pan if if is eft in the heated oven. Fire Hazard Pace meat the correct distance from the eement. Meat paced too cose to the eement may spatter, smoke, burn or catch fire during broiing. To ensure adequate grease drainage, do not use cookie sheets or simiar pans for broiing. Aso, covering the broier grid with foi is not recommended. Poor drainage of grease may resut in fire. ff foi is used, cut sits in foi to correspond with a openings in broier grid. Grease can then drain away and coo in pan. 13

14 Energy saving tips Athough the energy used for cooking is usuaty a very sma percentage of the tota energy used in the home, cooking energy can be used effiienty. Here are some tips to hep you conserve energy when using your cooking product. Use pans with fat bottoms, straight sides and tight-fitting ids.. Match the pan to the surface unit size. Cook with a minimum of iquid or fat to hep shorten cixking time. Preheat pans ony when recommended and for the shortest time possibe. Start food on higher heat settings, then set surface unit contro on bw or off to finish cooking. Use retained heat for axking when possibe. Use the more efficient surface units instead of the oven when possibe. Turn on me surface unit ony after pacing fied pan on the unit. Qven peeking may cause heat bss, onger codcing times and unsatisfactory baking resuts. Rey on your timer. Bake cakes, pies or cookies when oven is warm. Best time is after a mea has been cooked in it. Preheat the oven no bnger than necessary. Pan your meas for the most efficient use of the range. When using the oven to cook one food, try to cook the rest of the mea in it aso. Do not preheat when broiing, roasting or cooking items such as casseroes. Keep refector bows cean for best heat refection. 14

15 The oven vent Hot air and moisture escape from the oven through a vent under the right rear surface unit. You can cook on the unii or keep food warm on it whie the oven is on. The vent is needed for air circuation. Do not bock the vent. Poor baking/ roasting can resut. NOTE: Pastic utensis eft over the vent can met. Burn and Fire Hazard f you eave a utensi on the right rear surface unit, use pothoders when moving it. Pan handes can become hot enough to burn. Keep fammabe materias away from oven vent. Faiure to do so can resut in burns or a fire. The storage drawer The storage drawer is for storing pots and pans. The drawer can be removed to make it easier to cean under the range. Use care when handing the drawer. Removng the storage drawer: 1. Empty drawer of any pots and pans before removing drawer. Pu drawer straight out to the first stop. Lift front and pu out to the seamd stop. 2. Lift back sighty and side drawer a the way out. Repacng the storage drawer: 1. Fit ends of drawer side rais into the drawer guides on both sides of opening. 2. Lift drawer front and push in unti meta stops on drawer side rais cear white stops on drawer guides. Lift drawer front again to cear second stop and side drawer cosed. Drawe; side rai w 15

16 The anti-tip bracket The range wi not tip during norma use. However, tipping can occur if excessive force or weight is appied to the open door without the anti-tip bracket propery secured. To verfy the ant-tp bracket Is engaged: Look to see if the anti-tip bracket is attached with screws to the wa behind the contro pane. Make sure the cabe tether on the back of the range is secured by the two hooks on the bracket. See Instaation Instructions for further detais. Optiona door pane pat (mode RF302BXY) f you woud ike to change the coor of your oven door gass to white or amond, you can order one of these kits: White (Kii No ) Amond (Kit No ) from your Whirpoo Deaer. 17 Caring For Your Range In This Section Page Page Surface uns and refector bows..._ Removng the oven door I UH-up cooktop Ceanng chart Your range is designed for ease of care. Most ceaning can be done with items found around your home. Ceaning your range whenever spis or soiing occurs wi hep to keep if ooking and Burn and Eiectrica Shock Hazard operating ike new. Make sure ai contros are OFF and the range is coo before ceaning. Faiure to do so can resut in burns or eectrica shock. Surface units and refector bows Removing 1. Make sure a surface units are off and coo before removing surface units and refector bows. 2. Lift the edge of the unit, opposite the receptace, just enough to cear the eement hokfdown cip and the refector bow. 17

18 3. Pu the surface unit straight away from the receptace. 4. Lift out the refector bow. See Ceaning chart on page 21 for ceaning instructions. Repacing 1. Make sure a surface units are off and coo before repacing surfa- units and refector bowis. 2. Line up openings in the refector bow with the surface unit receptace and the eement hoddown cip. 18

19 3. Hod the surface unit as eve as possibe with the termina just started into the receptace. Push the surface unit termina into the receptace. 4. When termina is pushed into the receptace as far as it wi go, push down the edge of the surface unit opposite the receptace. The eement hoddown cip wi keep the surface unit from moving around. NOTE: Refector bows refect heat back to the utensis on the surface units. They aso hep catch spis. When they are kept cean, they refect heat better and ook new onger. f a refector bow gets discoored, some of the utensis may not be fat enough, or some may be too arge for the surface unit. In either case, some of the heat that s meant to go into or around a utensi goes down and heats the refector bow. This extra heat can discoor it. 19

Open the door to the first stop position. 2. Hod the door at both sides and ift it at the same ange it Is In. 3. To repace, fit the bottom corners of the door over the ends of the hinges. Push the door down eveny. The door wi cose ony when it is on the hinges correcty. 20
