4 When using the cooktop For coi eements, make sure the refector bows are in pace during cookin. Cookrng without refector % ows may subject the wiring and components underneath them to damage. For coi eements, do not ine refector bows with auminum foi or other iners. Improper instaation of these iners may resut in a risk of eectrica shock or fire. Do not cook on ceramic cooktop modue if it is broken. If cooktop shoud break, ceaning soutions and spiovers may penetrate the broken cooktop and create a risk of eectrica shock. Contact a quaified technician immediatey. Seect a pan with a fat bottom that IS about the same size as the surface unit. If an is smaer than the sur- P ace unit, some of the heating eement wi be e>cpos.ed and i%ik?gsud) ~%Z!:;XZ. rect pan size aso improves cooking efficiency. 8 Unti you get used to the settings, use the foowing as a guide. For best resuts, start cooking at the high setting; then turn the contro knob down to continue cooking. -.~-.- SETI-ING. --~ &Z~MMENDED USE HI * To start foods cooking. * To bring iquids to a boi. 1 MED-HI : *- To hod a rapid boi. To fry chicken or pancakes. i On soid eements, turn to LO or MED-LO when sizze starts. MED For gravy, pudding and icing. To cook arge amounts of vegetabes. On soid eements, turn to LO or MED-LO when sizze starts. MED-LO To keep food cooking after starting it on a higher setting. On soid eements, turn to LO to finish cooking. LO To keep food warm unti ready to serve. Using the soid eement surface unit modue Soid eement surface units are made of heavy cast-iron to provide even cooking. Each surface unit has a buit-in protective imiter as a safety feature. The imiter senses uneven cooking temperatures when: A pan bois dry. A pan is removed and the surface unit is eft on. The bottom of the pan is too arge or too sma for the surface unit. This WIII resut In onger cooking times. The bottom of the pan is rounded, warped, ribbed or dented and does not make fu contact with the surface unit. 1 he imiter wi automaticay reduce the heat I( ve to provide even cooking temperatures aid to protect the surface unit. NOTE: Soid eements stay hot for a ong ti ne. Do not use the HI setting for ong p?riods of time or eave pans on hot eerr ents when cooking is done. Burned food a id damage to the cookware coud resut. Use a ower setting to compete the cooking ar\d turn the soid eement surface unit off a fs w minutes before you finish cooking. Before pacing a pan on soid eement suface units for the first time, heat on HI st!tting for five minutes. The surface units w II give off smoke as the protective coating, afrpied at the factory, finishes bonding to th a surface. Using the ceramic gass c>oktop modue Cooking on the ceramic gass cooktop is anost the same as cooking on coi surface ur its. There are, however, a few differences: --he surface unit wi gow red when it is t Jrned on. You wi see the eement cycing on (gowing red) and off - even on HI : etting - to maintain the proper temperat Jre setting you have seected. Z;iding meta pans on ceramic gass cooktop surface coud eave marks. Wiping c ff the cooktop before and after each use v/i hep keep the surface free from stains snd provide the most even heating. See rages 21 and 22 for care and ceaning suggestions. 8

9 Cookware tips Seect a pan that is about the same size as the surface unit. NOTE: For best resuts and greater energy efficiency, use ony fat-bottomed utensis that make good contact with the surface units. Utensis with rounded, warped, ridged (such as some porceain ename-ware) or dented bottoms coud cause severe overheating of coi eements, which damages the utensi and/or surface unit. Woks, canners and teakettes with fat bottoms suitabe for use on your cooktop are now avaiabe in most stores that se housewares. The pan shoud have straight sides and a tight-fitting id. Choose medium to heavy gauge (thickness) pans that are fairy ight-weight. The pan materia (meta or gass) affects how fast heat transfers from the surface unit through the pan materia and how eveny heat spreads over the pan bottom. Choose pans that provide the best cooking resuts. Handes shoud be made of sturdy, heatresistant materia and be securey attached to the pan. Ceramic cooktop modue: With your hand, fee the bottom of your pans whie they are coo for nicks and scratches. Nicks and scratches on pan bottoms wi scratch the ceramic gass cooktop. Make sure bottoms of pans are cean and dry before using on cooktop. Avoid spiovers on cooktop. Use pans with ta sides. Do not cook food directy on cooktop. Product Damage Hazard D On coi eements, if a surface unit stays red for a ong time, the bottom of the pan is not fat enough or is too sma for the surface unit. Proonged usage of incorrect utensis can resut in damage to the surface unit, cooktop, wiring and surrounding areas. To prevent damage, use correct utensis, start cooking on HI and turn contro down to continue cooking. B Do not eave an empty utensi, or one which has boied dry, on a hot surface unit. The utensi can overheat and may damage the utensi or surface unit. kome canning information Soid and coi eements: The arge diame:er of most water-bath or pressure canners c mbined with high heat settings for ong periods of time can shorten the ife of reguar s Jr-face units and cause damage to the c,oktop. If you pan to use the coi eement cooktop for canning, we recommend the instaation 0 a Canning Kit. Order the kit (Part No ) from your Whirpoo deaer or authorized WhirpooFM service company. To protect your cooktop: Use fat-bottomed canners/pans for best resuts. Some canners have ribbed bottoms (porceain ename-ware) and are not recommended for soid eements. They do not make good contact with the surface unit, causing the imiter to reduce the heat eve. This interferes with the canning process. continued on next page 9

If meat begins to cook too quicky, turn the gri contro knob to a ower setting. Do not eave gri unattet Jed. Fire Hazard Grease can cause excessive fare-ups. To put out fire: - Remove food from the gri, turn the gri contro to OFF and cover the gri with a arge meta pan. - Make sure the vent system has been switched to ON. - Do not put water on a grease fire.
