3 Introduction Dear Members, 2017 was again a successful year for the Society however it was tinged with sadness with the loss in January of our dear President Ron Juden. Without doubt we have Ron to thank for the continued existence of the Society for it was his constant hard work and enthusiasm over more years than anyone can remember, that kept it alive. At his funeral in a packed church we heard how Ron had been involved in just about every facet of village life and it is fitting that in spring 2018 a village sign will be erected in his memory with the Society making a significant donation to towards its cost. After nearly a year without a President, I am pleased to announce that at our recent AGM Alan Sawkins was unanimously elected to succeed Ron. Alan is a true 'Beckley Boy' and a long time member of our Society. He will act as both President and Treasurer this year for In 2018 the village school is celebrating 200 years since its inception and to mark this there will be an old style Summer fete held on the Jubilee Field at the end of June. A major part of this will be our Summer show located in a marquee - just like the old days I'm told! With Easter falling at the beginning of April, the Farmers' market occupying the hall the following week and the summer show being 3 weeks earlier than usual there will unfortunately be no Spring show this year. You will however see several changes to the show classes such as tulips in the earlier summer show and more dahlia classes in the slightly earlier autumn show and in addition to this we still have a full programme of other events for you. With Josh returning from Japan and the USA we will learn in February about his experiences and he plans to run a soil improvement workshop later in Spring when the ground has warmed up. This year we plan to combine our plant sale with the Church Coffee morning in May and ask you all to think now about what you might grow or have to bring along to sell. The subsidised outing held for the past two years has proved to be extremely popular and this year will visit Borde Hill garden near Horsham including a tour with the Head Gardener and lunch. The coach seats 29 so first come first served! We continue to work closely with the school and they gave us magnificent displays at each of our shows. The school has received a grant to install raised beds and the committee decided to present a set of hand gardening tools to each of the school's four classes along with a donation to enable them to buy seeds from the Dobies catalogue. At the AGM it was agreed that after at least 10 years without change, the annual subscription should increase to 5 for individuals and 8 for family membership. Following his illness and having consulted you, Frank our Membership secretary will make the 2018 schedules available for those that want them via our web site. These will also be sent by to members prior to each show reducing the number of copies needing to be printed and distributed. Lastly with the Society enjoying its current success, Phil and I announced at the AGM that we intend to step down from our roles as Chairman and Show Secretary at the end of 2018 hoping that fresh blood would create a new impetus to ensure the Society goes forward from a position of strength. At the AGM Gail Pinder agreed to become and was elected as Vice Chairman for 2017 with the intention of offering herself for election to Chairman and since the AGM Zoe Gleisner has offered to become Treasurer and Nick Hamilton Show Secretary all of course subject to being elected at the 2018 AGM. So it's business as usual and great news for the future of the society. Phil Maynard, Chairman. 2
4 2018 HIGHLIGHTS Josh's adventures: Join us in February when Josh will recount his year in Japan and the USA. Soil improvement workshop: Learn how to make a real difference to the structure of your soil. Plant Sale: This year we are holding the plant sale at the May Friends of the Church coffee morning. It's a chance to save yourself some money and if you have excess seedlings, plants and cuttings bring them along to raise money for the Society. Earlier than usual Summer Show: Just like old times a true village show on the Jubilee Field celebrating 200 years of the village school. You won't want to miss this so please make sure you enter as many categories as possible to make it a show to remember. A visit to Borde Hill Gardens near Horsham in May (see page 19 for full details). This includes a guided tour of the garden with their head gardener and lunch with the afternoon free to explore the House and gardens. We are again subsidising this trip by paying for the coach but there are only 29 seats so book early! Discounts: Once again Dobies have retained the discounts at the same level as last year with 50% off seeds and 15% for other items. However to maintain this discount in future years we need as many people as possible to take advantage of this great offer. For a catalogue and order form contact Ray Pannell: Alternatively you can order direct from their web site: using the discount code GD1062D at checkout. Encourage your friends and relatives to take advantage of this offer as we will all benefit next year. Also on production of a current membership card, members can obtain a discount on plants, shrubs and other items from the following: Ed s Nursery Staplecross 10% The Shrub Centre, Staplecross 5% Flower Arranging. To help all our flower arrangers our Judge Ann has clarified the show rules and I would ask all those entering to read these particularly in relation to the physical size of entries. Photos: This year we return to more tightly defined subjects. Don't forget though the maximum size including the mount must be no more than A4. For our younger keen photographers we again have a class for under 12s in the Autumn show. A good opportunity to get our village children involved. 3

19 Recipes for Home Baking Victoria sandwich for Summer Show Class 68 Ingredients 225g unsalted butter, softened 225g golden caster sugar 4 medium eggs at room temperature 225g self-raising flour To serve: Strawberry jam 150ml double cream whipped (optional) Icing sugar to dust Preparation method 1. Pre Heat the oven to 180 C/gas Grease and line two 18cm round loose-bottomed cake tins with greaseproof paper. 3. Put the butter and sugar in a large bowl. Cream the two ingredients together using an electric hand whisk or a wooden spoon until the mixture is pale and creamy. 4. Whisk the eggs in a jug and gradually add them, a little at a time, to the butter mixture, whisking well between each addition. stir in a spoonful of flour if the mixture looks as if it might curdle. Fold in the flour, along with 2 tablespoons of boiling water, which helps to lighten the finished cake. 5. Spoon evenly between the two prepared cake tins and bake in the oven for minutes, until golden on top and firm to the touch. Turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. 6. Peel off any paper and place one cake on a serving plate. Spread with jam then if your opting for cream too, spoon it carefully on top. Sandwich with the other cake and dust with a little icing sugar to serve. There is some question over the precise ingredients and method of presenting a Victoria sandwich. Certainly Queen Victoria would not have been able to sandwich her sponge with whipped cream as it is often the case today but the monarch would indeed have enjoyed the traditional jam in the middle and perhaps a dusting of sugar over the top. Apple and Spice cake for Autumn Show Class 42 Ingredients 2 Bramley or cooking apples (around 450g) 150g soft light brown sugar 200g unsalted butter, softened 75g ground almonds 3 medium eggs at room temperature 175g self-raising wholemeal flour Grated zest of ½ lemon 1 tsp ground mixed spice ½ tsp ground ginger A good pinch of ground cloves A ground pinch of ground cinnamon 2 tbsp apricot conserve splash of milk Preparation method 1. Pre Heat the oven to 190 C/gas Grease and line a 20cm round loose-bottomed deep cake tin with greaseproof paper. 3. Peel and chop one of the apples and set aside 4. Cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl. Gradually beat in the eggs, a little at a time, then fold in the wholemeal flour, ground almonds, lemon zest, all the spices, chopped apple and a splash of milk. 5. Spoon into the prepared tin. Core the remaining apple and slice thinly. Arrange over the top of the cake. Bake in the oven for 1 hour until golden 6. Cool in tin for 5 minutes, then remove and transfer to a wire rack 7. Sieve the apricot conserve to remove any lumps then brush all over the cake while it's still warm. Serve warm or cold. 18
