Code of practice for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of emergency voice communication systems Emergency voice communication systems in 'refuge areas' Emergency voice communication (EVC) systems are used to assist both firefighters and those responsible for evacuating buildings or sports stadiums. This ensures a controlled evacuation, minimal panic and limits confusion. What is BS ? BS provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of EVC systems in and around buildings and at sports, entertainment and similar venues. Current building regulations insist all new non-domestic buildings with more than one storey provide refuge areas. These refuge areas provide people who cannot easily use fire escapes or evacuation lifts, with a protected temporary place to wait. Effective two-way communication in these areas is essential to help rescue teams in determining where extra assistance is required and to reassure the people waiting. 45 New Standard BS 8878:2010 Web accessibility. Code of practice BS 8878 has been designed to introduce non-technical professionals to accessibility, usability and user experience for disabled and older people. It will be especially beneficial to anyone new to this subject as it gives guidance on process, rather than on technical and design issues. BS 8878 is also cited in the Department for Business s new e-accessibility Action Plan and is the basis for updated government advice on making websites more accessible.
