37 NEW Aggregates update; are you ready for the CPR? The latest standards for testing, specification and guidance The introduction of mandatory CE marking requirements started from 1 July It is important that aggregates recyclers are up-to-date with the appropriate standards and accompanying guidance documents (PDs). Encouraging the wider use of aggregates produced from recycled materials that comply with aggregates standards help promote more resource efficient construction. The latest editions of the European Standards have now been published and include a new and essential standard BS EN Evaluation of conformity of aggregates Initial Type Testing and Factory Production Control. This new standard consolidates the Type Testing and Factory Product Control requirements which were replicated in each of the individual product standards and combines the sampling and testing rates for all the aggregate products. The most significant changes to the latest versions of the product standards are the inclusion of a new annex A in each standard which identifies source materials considered in the development of each standard and their status in respect of the scope of the standard. A further change involves the use of common tables of properties and characteristics in each of the standards to improve consistency across the family of product standards, and where the particular property category does not apply to the use of the aggregate covered by the standards it is greyed out. Migration of certain elements BS EN 71-3:2013 is a revised European Standard that specifies the requirements and test methods for the migration of aluminium, antimony, arsenic, barium, boron, cadmium, chromium (III), chromium (VI), cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, strontium, tin, organic tin and zinc from toy materials and from parts of toys. The revision was developed in order to provide a harmonized, referenced standard in support of the revised toy safety directive 2009/48/EC. This standard is a significant revision from the previous version and contains the following important changes: Toy materials are now sub-divided into three categories The standard prescribes methods of sample preparation and migration procedures for all categories of toy materials The standard recognizes that there are difficulties in the quantification of chromium (VI) in category I and II toy materials and so guidance on other options are provided in Annex I This revision no longer describes the use of an analytical correction when determining the compliance of a toy material with the maximum migration limits.
