21 BS 4994:1988 Design and construction of vessels and tanks in reinforced plastics The date of withdrawal of BS 4994:1988 and its subsequent registration as obsolescent is still being discussed between CEN and BSI. There has been a proposal passed to BSI that BS 4994 should be retained for non-pressure applications (< 0,5 bar). BSI is aware that the scope of BS EN as presented covers all tanks with a working pressure up to 10 bar, but it is becoming apparent that for tanks < 0,5 bar it is not viable to comply to BS EN parts 1 to 4. Therefore the UK based view being proposed to PRI/5 and its associated sub-committees potentially could be a request to CEN to push the date of withdrawal of conflicting National Standards back further and that the scopes of BS EN series is modified to comply solely with tanks above > 0,5 bar. The background to this publication is that CENELEC previously published EN :2003 which endorsed IEC :2002. This was published by BSI as BS EN :2003. IEC then published Amendment 1 in 2004 and Amendment 2 in 2007 both of which CENELEC adopted in October 2008 with CENELEC common modifications. BSI was due to publish these amendments as one consolidated text. Subsequently however, it was recognised that as both of the IEC amendments had been modified by CENELEC there was a possibility of ambiguity during implementation by national standards bodies and CENELEC therefore decided to produce a consolidated version of its own in order to clarify the existing requirements. This was an editorial exercise and resulted in a draft consolidated text being issued for a two month vote which closed in September This consolidated text will be adopted by BSI and contains no technical difference to EN :2003+A1:2008+A2:2008 which it supersedes.
