2 CASTLE CARY GARDENING ASSOCIATION The Association holds regular evening meetings at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall in Castle Cary, usually on the first Thursday of each month, except in January and August. We invite speakers on subjects of general interest as well as on specific gardening topics. A number of day and half-day visits to places of particular interest are also arranged subject to members wishes and suggestions. The annual subscription to the Association is only 7.00, which covers the ten talks each year and discretionary discounts. Nonmembers are always welcome at our meetings, the guest fee is 1.00 per meeting. 3 HOW TO ENTER 1. ENTRIES must be on the official form or ed. Put X against the classes that you wish to enter and take the form to Dave Marsh Hardware OR submit your entry by to: ccgardeningassociation@gmail.com (which will be acknowledged) not later than 5.00pm on Wednesday 2 nd August CHILDREN are very welcome to enter any adult classes. 3. HANDICRAFTS. Please indicate the size of your entries so that space can be allocated, see rules in this section. 4. ON THE DAY. Collect EXHIBITORS CLASS CARDS on arrival between 8.00am and 10.15am. Please note that you MUST have a class card for each entry in each class. Doors will close at 10.30am. 5. STAGING of exhibits to be completed by am, when all but the judges and officials must leave the hall. SHOW RULES Please check the rules carefully as some may have changed. Note that rules applicable to specific sections or classes are shown on the relevant schedule pages. 1. JUDGING. Wherever possible the show will be governed by the RHS Horticultural Handbook. This may be examined on request but may not be taken away. 2. ENTRIES. ONE entry per class per exhibitor for Sections A, B, C, D, E & G. Maximum of TWO entries per class per exhibitor for Section F. 3. All entries for SECTIONS A & B must have been grown by the exhibitor. 4. POINTS will be awarded as follows: First Prize 3 points; Second Prize 2 points; Third Prize 1 point. In any class where multiple entries are permitted points will only be awarded for one entry. 5. MERITS may be awarded by the Judges at their discretion. 6. In the event of a POINTS TIE, the overall number of first prizes (then second prizes) awarded in the relevant section will be the deciding factor. 7. Where the term VASE is mentioned any suitable stable container eg a jar may be used except for Classes 53 to 56 and 65 to 71 where the Association will provide vases which should be used in these classes. 8. CUP & SHIELD winners are responsible for the safe keeping and return of their trophies to the Secretary by Thursday 5 th July On any MATTER ARISING, not covered by the rules, the decision of the Committee shall be final. 10. Where applicable MEASUREMENTS & WEIGHTS are shown as metric with the nearest Imperial equivalent. Page 3

6 SECTION A: VEGETABLES & FRUIT JUDGE: Mr Harry Godden Note Show Rules on page 3, particularly nos. 2 & 3. Vegetables. Size restrictions mean just under the maximum not much smaller. Beans. Straight, keep stalk intact, display on table with stalks all facing one way and tails the other, should be smooth with no protruding beans. Broad beans need to have the same number of beans and a perfect skin. Beetroot. No hard skin, keep tap root, make sure not divided, trim leaves to 7.5 cm (3inches) from collar, uniform shape. Carrots. Tender roots of good shape, size and colour, free from side roots, skins clean and bright, trim leaves. Courgettes. Young, tender, with flower if possible, colour immaterial but must be matched and within the schedule size. Cucumbers. Fresh, straight, uniform thickness with short stalk. Onions & shallots. Uniformity, pare off roots without breaking the skin, evenly brown skins, chop off leaves and turn down some stem enough to tie with raffia or string, display on rings or a dish of sand for shallots. Peas. Large well filled but not over-ripe peas, keep 1.5cm (½ ) stalk, straight pods, keep bloom on pods so handle by the stalk. Potatoes. Clean, wiped with a cloth not scrubbed, a good uniform shape, display straight on the table. Radishes. Roots fresh, medium sized, bright colour, with foliage intact. Tomatoes. Even colour and shape, firm, test by pressing thumb into flesh, no dents should appear, keep the calyx (spider) which needs to be fresh, display on a plate, can use a doily, a truss of tomatoes needs to have a gradual change of colour from top to bottom. Soft fruits. Exhibits can be assembled at home in advance if preferred. Please ensure that jars can be opened easily otherwise they cannot be judged. Classes must be inside a large clear plastic bag (these can be provided). Classes Jams &Jellies.
