Branch) Federation of Women s Institutes of Northern Ireland Irish Fuchsia and Pelargonium Society Northern Ireland Bonsai Society Northern Ireland Group of Flower Arrangement Societies Belfast and District Beekeepers Association Northern Ireland Orchid Society Northern Ireland Vegetable Association North of Ireland Dahlia Society Rose Society of Northern Ireland VENUE Botanic Gardens, Belfast (between Queen s University and Ulster Museum). Access to the show for staging purposes is via gates at Botanic Avenue. On Saturday 20, Botanic Gardens must be cleared of exhibitors vehicles by 9.30am. Exhibitors can continue to stage exhibits up to 10.30am on Saturday but vehicular access to Botanic Gardens will not be permitted after 9.30am and any vehicles already on site must be removed by 9.30am. Cars will not be permitted access to Botanic Gardens on Sunday 21 September until after the event closes and stewards on site have cleared the public from the event area. Please note that there can be a delay in gates opening until it has been deemed safe to permit vehicular access. 3

6 CITY OF BELFAST AUTUMN FLOWER SHOW RULES The Rules of the various Societies shall apply, e.g. The Rose Society of Northern Ireland, National Chrysanthemum Society, etc. Rules and Regulations of specialist Societies details of such societies special conditions are given at the beginning of each set of relevant classes. DEFINITIONS The words kind, cultivar and variety are used in this schedule in the following sense: Sweet Peas, Roses, Carnations are distinct kinds of flowers. Fragrant Cloud, Peace and Super Star are distinct varieties (cultivars) of roses. REGULATIONS 1. All classes including confined and novice classes are open to the general public, unless the wording of a particular class specifies otherwise. 2. Attention to Horticultural Exhibits during the show, watering of exhibits should be carried out between 11.30am and 12.30pm on Sunday 21 September if required. No vehicular access will be permitted. 3. All exhibits, personal property, etc. shall be at the risk of the exhibitors. The organisers shall not be liable for compensation for loss or damage from any cause whatsoever. 4. Exhibitors will not be allowed to place advertising matter of any description on or near their exhibits. ***IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL EXHIBITORS*** REGISTRATION FORMS AND ENTRY CARDS Please note that exhibitors entering the City of Belfast Flower Show will be responsible for completing their own entry cards 5. (a) All exhibitors must complete a registration form in order to enter exhibits at the Show. There is a registration form at the back of the schedule or alternatively registration forms are available from the Show Secretary s desk at the Show venue or from the Show Secretary (see address, page 4). (b) The signing of a registration form by an exhibitor shall imply that he/she agrees to observe and conform to all the rules and regulations in connection with the Show. 5

7 6. (a) Completed registration forms with entry fees, including members of the W.I., to be handed in at the Show Secretary s desk: Friday 19 September 2014 between 12noon - 9pm (Floral Art: 6.30pm - 9pm). Saturday 20 September 2014 between 8am am (Honey, Cacti and Succulents: 9.30am 10.30am). (b) W.I. members entering the Team Class must complete a registration form under the name of the institute. W.I. members entering any other class must complete a registration form, under their own name and address etc. 7. When a registration form and the correct entry fee have been handed in, the exhibitor will be given an exhibitor s number and the correct number of entry cards. The exhibitor will be responsible for filling in his/her entry cards before placing them at his/her exhibits. 8. (a) Entry Fees: 1-20 entries, 30p each; each additional entry free. Exceptions; W.I. Team Entry - 1 Allotment Class - 1 Children s Classes, Children and Youth Classes (Honey), School s Class and Community Garden Class are exempt from entry fees. (b) Cheques to be made payable to Belfast City Council. Entry fees payable at Show Secretary s desk during staging times (see rule 10) 9. An exhibitor may enter more than one exhibit in any class unless otherwise stated. STAGING 10. Exhibitors can stage their exhibits in the marquee during the following times: Friday 19 September, 12noon - 10pm, (Floral Art: 6pm - 9pm). Saturday 20 September, 6.30am am, (Floral Art: 8am am), (Honey, Cacti and Succulents: 9.30am am). 11. Entry cards shall be placed face downwards in front of the exhibits prior to judging. 12. All exhibits (cut flowers, plants, vegetables etc.) must be the property of the exhibitor and must have been grown by the exhibitor at least two months previous to exhibition, six months in the case of cacti and succulents. Exceptions to this rule are, W.I., Preserves, Wine, Baking and Handicrafts classes. 13. Except in the W.I. Cacti and Succulents and Gardeners Class two or more persons may not exhibit in the same class from the same garden or apiary. 6

8 14. (a) The Show organisers reserve the right to refuse any entry without assigning reason for doing so. 14. (b) The Show organisers reserve the right to inspect gardens from which exhibits have been entered for competition in order to be satisfied that the conditions governing competitive exhibits are fulfilled. 15. All exhibits except where otherwise stated, must be staged in the vases and dishes provided by the Show organisers. Exhibitors must provide their own boxes, boards, baskets and pedestals. 16. All exhibits should be correctly named on the name cards provided. Errors in naming will not disqualify, but the Judges will regard correctness and clearness in naming as telling in favour of an exhibit in close competition. If the name of the variety is unknown, the label should bear the words Name Unknown 17. Pot Plants must be entered in pots wherein grown. Pots must be clean. JUDGING 18. The decision of the Judges shall be final as to merit. Any other points of dispute shall be referred to the organisers for decision which shall be final and binding on all parties. Protests on points of classification or violation of the rules shall be made in writing to the Show Manager not later than 4pm on the day on which judging takes place. Protests shall be accompanied by a fee of 5 which shall be refunded if the protest is sustained. 19. Judging Times, Saturday 20 September: Honey 10am Cacti and Succulents 10am All other exhibits 10.45am The Craig Wallace Award 12.30pm or 2pm. No person except the Judges, Manager, Stewards or persons officially appointed, will be allowed to remain in the Exhibition area during the time of judging. No person may act as a Steward of a Section if she or he is exhibiting in that Section. 20. After being judged, exhibitors must not re-arrange their exhibits in any way. PRIZES 21. One First, one Second and one Third prize will ordinarily be awarded in any class. An exhibitor may be awarded more than one prize in any class except where otherwise stated. On the recommendation of the Judge, additional commendations may be awarded in classes where the standard is high. Any prize may be withheld or modified if the exhibits are considered unworthy of the prize offered. 7

9 22. Cup or trophy classes for the highest number of points in the event of a tie, the cup or trophy will be awarded to the exhibitor gaining the greatest number of first prizes. 23. Successful exhibitors should claim their Prize Money from the Show Manager s desk between 1.30pm - 6pm on Sunday 21 September. Exhibitors who are unable to collect their prize money can nominate an exhibitor to collect it on their behalf on Sunday. Money not claimed on Sunday between 1.30pm-6pm will be deemed to have been forfeited. 24. All Cups and Trophies awarded to winners in the various classes to be retained for one year and returned to the Secretaries of the various Societies on or before 1 September of the following year. REMOVAL 25. No person shall remove any exhibit or portion of exhibit until 6pm on Sunday. Exhibitors who remove any exhibit before 6pm on Sunday may not be permitted to exhibit at future shows. 26. The Show will close at 6pm on the second day. From 6pm onwards competitors may remove their exhibits from their stands. At 6pm all competitors and their assistants will assemble at their exhibits and these must be removed from the marquee by 7.15pm Societies will take full responsibility for stewarding their section. 8

14 BELFAST WINEMAKERS CIRCLE RULES The general rules of the City of Belfast Autumn Flower Show will apply with the following exceptions: Rules 2, 13, 14, 15, 16 and Bottles must be colourless, clear glass, round-shouldered, punted, full-size wine bottles with flanged all-cork or combined cork/plastic stoppers, and filled so as to allow an air space of ¼in. to ¾in. (6mm-19mm). Bottles must not bear any proprietary names or any labels other than those labels supplied by the Show Manager (Liqueurs - Rule 8). 2. All wines must be home-made by the exhibitor and not fortified in any manner. Liqueurs must also be home-made. 3. Labels will be supplied when the wines are formally entered for the competition. Exhibitors will be responsible for noting their exhibit numbers etc. in order that wines can be reclaimed after the Show. 4. Exhibitors may enter any number of wines in any one class, provided they are not the same ferment. 5. No wine may be tested or interfered with in any way during the time of the competition other than by the Judges or Judges Stewards. 6. The variety of fruit used to make the wine must be clearly marked on the label. 7. Exhibits in classes 1-6 must be produced from flowers, fruits or vegetables but not commercially available wine kits. 8. Liqueurs Class. Bottle of competitor s own choice, volume between 3 fl. oz. and 5 fl. oz. Visual presentation will be taken into account. The type of liqueur must be clearly stated on the label. Judging will be under the British Cactus and Succulent Society s Rules and Recommendations as laid down in their Handbook of Shows, 9th Edition. 2. The Classification of plants shall, for the purposes of the Show, be that given in the B.C.S.S. Handbook of Shows, 9th Edition. 3. Clear notes on what plants are and are not admissible in these classes are given in the B.C.S.S. Handbook of Shows, 9th Edition. 4. Where a class calls for more than one plant, it is intended that these should be of different species. 5. No Exhibitor will be awarded more than one prize in any class. 6. Honey Show will adopt the Rules and Regulations of the City of Belfast Autumn Flower Show, which are printed on pages 5-8 of the Schedule 2014 and in addition the recommendations published in the BBKA s Guide for Judges and Exhibitors of Honey and Bee Produce of March HONEY SHOW RULES 1. All honey and beeswax must be the product of the exhibitor s own apiary, with the exception of Class All extracted honey must be exhibited in standard, clear glass squat or deep 454gm (1lb) honey jars with secure, easily removable covers, to the satisfaction of the Judge. 3. All honey exhibits will not be sold, unless requested by the exhibitor. 4. All exhibits must be unlabelled, except Class Honey colour British Standards Institutions (No. 1656) filters (Glasses) will be used. 6. Mead must be in colourless, clear glass, round shouldered, punted full sized wine bottles with flanged stoppers, filled to allow a 6mm to 9mm (1/4in. to 3/4in.) air space. 7. Mead must be made by exhibitor, not fortified in any manner, and with no added fruit or flavouring. 8. Children, young persons under 18 years or their eco-schools or other youth clubs/groups may enter Class with the exception of 107 subject to the rules above. There is no entry fee for such in all classes including Class 117. Health and Safety - exhibitors preparing wax or any other exhibits or ingredients by heating, baking or boiling should do so with access to first aid equipment and foam or powder fire extinguishers. Ingredients: 225g/8oz self raising flour, 175g/6oz sultanas, 175g/6oz honey, 110g/4oz butter, 2 medium eggs,pinch of salt. Method: Sieve flour with cinnamon. Add sugar and fruit. Melt butter or margarine with honey over low heat and stir into dry ingredients with beaten egg and milk. Mix well and pour into greased and lined 500g/1lb loaf tin. Bake at 150 C/300 F/Gas mark 2 for about 1 hour. 27 TOP TRAY COMPETITION Class 122 The Top Tray class is for a collection of three types of vegetables taken from the following list of eight. The quantity of each vegetable required for the collection is given in brackets and must consist of the same variety: carrots (3), cauliflowers (2), onions (3), parsnips (3), peas (6 pods), potatoes (3), runner beans (6 pods), and tomatoes (6). Each type of vegetable will be judged out of a total of 20 points. This is split into three sections as follows: 7 points for size, shape and colour; 7 points for condition; 6 points for uniformity. The overall mark will therefore be out of a total of 60. All vegetables are to be displayed for effect. The vegetables must be displayed within an area measuring 45cm x 60cm, without bending any part of them. No part of any exhibit may exceed the size of the tray. A tray or board measuring 45cm x 60cm can be used to display vegetables, or the area can simply be marked on the staging. Where a tray has a lip or edge, it is the internal measurements that must not exceed 45 cm x 60cm. A black cloth is permitted, and the tray may be painted. Parsley is allowed for garnishing, but no other foliage or accessories, such as plates, sands, rings, will be allowed. Onion tops may be tied or whipped using raffia or string. NOTES FOR EXHIBITORS AND JUDGES Carrots and parsnips must have foliage trimmed back to 7.5cm. peas and beans must be displayed with some stalk attached. Tomatoes must be displayed with calyces (the green flower bud case). Judges may handle exhibits, open pods and so on to check for quality. The tray, board or staging must not be cut or mutilated in any way such as cutting holes for standing onions in. Judges should use their discretion when judging the Top Tray class, remembering that entries may come from inexperienced exhibitors. The points awarded should be clearly marked by the judges on the exhibitors cards. Queries that arise, regarding anything other than the above rules, should be referred to, and decided by, show officials. Failure to abide by any of these rules will lead to disqualification. N.B. 40 TOP VASE COMPETITION Class The Top Vase class is for a vase of mixed flowering stems containing a total of between five and ten stems, taken from a minimum of two different kinds of plants. Please note that it is two different KINDS of plants; two varieties of the same plant are NOT two kinds. 2. Only fresh, home-grown flowers can be used in the vase. 3. The display will be judged out of a total of 35 points, split into: 25 points for the colour, form, condition, quality and freshness of the flowers on display, and 10 marks for the overall presentation and effect of the flowers in the vase. The vase will be viewed from all directions. Judging of the flowers should be to the normal rules used for other classes. 4. Stems used in the display must be showing flowers only. No seed heads or berries will be allowed. 5. No accessories whatsoever such as bows and additional foliage will be allowed. Foliage which is growing naturally from the flowering stem and still attached to that stem, is allowed. NOTES FOR EXHIBITORS AND JUDGES Flowering stems can be taken from ANY flowering plant. The different kinds of plants need to be taken from different genera. For instance, pinks, carnations and sweet william, which are all dianthus, would not be classed as different kinds. This class is open for anyone to enter and Judges should use their discretion when judging the class, bearing in mind that the entries may come from inexperienced exhibitors.
