WHY S? DICKSON Paraffin Baths are precise instruments designed to safey faciitate hot paraffin treatments of the body extremities so as to reieve the pain and discomfort associated with joint diseases and/or injuries. Pubished discourses on the benefits of such treatments are avaiabe from Whiteha. DICKSON Baths have evoved since 1924, using the ideas, imagination and advice of many in the fied of physica therapy and physica medicine. Today DICKSON is synonymous with quaity and is the finest name in the appication of paraffin. Distinctive features of these baths are detaied on the succeeding pages, but a few of the more prominent ones might be: Stainess Stee Tank. Paraffin and perspiration have been known to have corrosive properties. A Dickson paraffin baths are constructed with 22 gage 304 stainess stee with a 2B finish, which wi not corrode with heavy use, and meets the highest standards in sanitizing. Precise Temperature Contro. The DICKSON Baths operate with a maximum temperature variation of pus or minus 1 F (0.55 C). This insures a critica bath temperature and the quickest possibe formation of the paraffin gove which is so essentia to the paraffin treatment, as it quicky protects the immersed member from burns, whie aowing a great amount of heat input. In other words, a good paraffin bath must hod the temperature precisey so the soution wi immediatey congea around the reativey coder member when it is immersed. High Heat Warning Light. Indicates the temperature of the bath is higher than that considered safe and comfortabe for treatment. Timed Meting or Sanitizing Temperature Circuit. The DICKSON Bath is the ony bath having a timed hi-heat circuit. This simpy aows the meting of the paraffin or sanitizing to take pace unattended. Aso, with such a switch, the hi-heat cannot accidentay be eft in the on position. Sanitizing is accompished by the operator turning the hi-heat circuit on for an hour at the end of the day. When the timer returns to zero, the bath automaticay returns to treatment temperature, ready for use the next morning. Light Mahogany Moding. (Found on modes PB-104 and PB-105 ony) These hard wood modings, with a new pastic epoxy finish, insure the patient's protection from the heat of the bath and surrounding meta. They are contoured and provide a comfortabe, coo and safe rest for the patient's arm or eg. They insuate the tank from the atmosphere and thereby minimize heat conduction and do contribute to the stabiity of the bath temperature. These modings, in sighty extending over the inside of the tank, aso serve as a spash guard or arrester. Integrated Heating Eements. The eements are an integra part of the tank and provide an even fow of heat with no dangerous hot spots. Aso, in this regard for safety, a DICKSON baths have a imit switch on both the hi-heat and maintenance circuits which wi automaticay prohibit runaway temperatures. There are many other features, but, again, a most important one is the renowned DICKSON quaity with the attendant troube-free rugged construction. DICKSON Institutiona Bath modes are shipped compete with pure paraffin, pexigas bottom sats to keep contact of appendages from resting directy on the bottom of the unit (PB-104 & PB-105), cover and thermometer. They are guaranteed for 1 year against mechanica or eectrica defects. ACCEPTABLE TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE CONDITIONS: Temperature: +32 ºF to +131 ºF (0 ºC to +55 ºC) Reative Humidity: 10% to 100% Atmospheric Pressure: No Requirements Note: Unit must not be exposed to ingress of water or to severe physica trauma. Degradation of unit function and/or performance may occur. 2 Phone (800) (626) Fax (626) Web:

Pace the paraffin in the bath. Pug the bath into AC outet. There is no power switch so the unit wi be on once pugged in. Rotate the timer switch to activate the timed hiheat circuit for the fu 55 minutes. To rapidy met the paraffin it may be desirabe to activate the hi-heat circuit a second time. In any event, when the time switch returns to 0 the hi-heat circuit is broken and the bath automaticay wi begin to operate on the maintenance circuit. Therefore, after the timer returns to 0, aow the bath to coo unti the treatment temperature of 126 F (52.2 C) is reached and maintained. The high heat warning ight wi go off as treatment temperature is approached. ** CAUTION! Do not rey on the ight aone to determine whether the Dickson Paraffin Bath is at operating temperature ALWAYS CHECK THAT THE PROVIDED THERMOMETER READS A SAFE OPERATING TEMPERATURE, 126 to 132 F (52.2 to 55.6 C) BEFORE SUBMERGING ANY APPENDAGES IN THE WAX! ** ATTENTION! Keep the unit connected to the eectrica outet. The maintenance circuit, independent of the high-heat circuit, is controed by a cose differentia thermo-switch set to automaticay keep the bath iquid at a temperature of 126 F (52.2 C). The DICKSON Bath precisey maintains this temperature. This insures the quickest possibe gove to be formed. If a higher temperature is required for an individua patient, turn on the high heat knob unti the thermometer shows the desired temperature. With the high-heat knob switched on and the bath covered, the temperature wi rise 1 F (0.55 C) per minute. 4 Phone (800) (626) Fax (626) Web:

The high heat indicator ight wi go on when the temperature of the bath is anywhere in the range of 140 to 150 F (54.4 to 65.5 C) and above. This ight indicates when the bath is coming up to sanitizing temperature. DO NOT USE INDICATOR TO DETERMINE OPERATING TEMPERATURE! ALWAYS VERIFY OPERATING TEMPERATURE WITH THE PROVIDED THERMOMETER. NE PAS UTILISER LE VOYANT POUR DÉTERMINER LA TEMPÉRATURE DE FONCTIONNEMENT! TOUJOURS VÉRIFIER LA TEMPÉRATURE DE FONCTIONNEMENT À L'AIDE DU THERMOMÈTRE FOURNI. It is recommended the Paraffin Bath be connected to eectric current day and night. It wi then be ready for use at any time. The temperature of the paraffin wi not rise above 212 F (100 C) at any time. On a DICKSON modes, there is a safety imit switch on the meting eement. Thus the powerfu meting eement is safety circuited by both the cut-out switch and the timer mechanism. As an added precaution the maintenance eement, which in itsef is not powerfu enough to overheat the bath is aso imited by a cut-out switch. If it is necessary to disconnect the bath from the eectrica circuit at night, the temperature of the paraffin soution wi drop approximatey 25 to 30 F (13.8 to 16.5 C). By turning the high-heat switch on in the morning for about 30 minutes the proper treatment temperature wi again be achieved. BE SURE THAT THERE IS PARAFFIN IN THE TANK BEFORE OPERATING UNIT. OPERATION WITH AN EMPTY TANK MAY CAUSE THE HEATING ELEMENTS TO BURN OUT. S'ASSURER QU'IL Y A DE LA PARAFFINE DANS LE RÉSERVOIR AVANT DE DÉMARRER L'APPAREIL. FAIRE FONCTIONNER L'APPAREIL AVEC UN RÉSERVOIR VIDE PEUT BRÛLER LES ÉLÉMENTS CHAUFFANTS. DIRECTIONS FOR ADJUSTING THE CIRCUIT To ower the operating temperature, turn the adjusting screw COUNTER-CLOCKWISE about 5 minutes on a cock dia for a 6 F (3.3 C) change. Since the bath coos very sowy, about 1 F (0.55 C) in 10 minutes, aow penty of time for the temperature to sette to the desired point before further adjustment. To raise the operating temperature, turn the adjusting screw CLOCKWISE. Because these thermostats are in continuous operation, they do occasionay mafunction. In such an event, pease ca for repacement instructions. DIRECTIONS FOR TREATMENT The appendage to be treated shoud first be thoroughy washed with a antimicrobia soap and dried. The appendage shoud then be paced in the bath and quicky removed so a thin coat of paraffin congeas and adheres to the skin. This procedure shoud be repeated unti a gove of paraffin is of sufficient thickness to aow the patient to keep the member immersed in comfort. After this gove is formed, the member shoud be constanty immersed in the bath for 10 to 20 minutes. The skin remains soft, piabe and moist when this treatment is used and a characteristic bood fow increase to aid in rehabiitation. Continuous immersion is the recommended procedure for the fastest reief. For new patients, it is suggested the foowing times be considered: 10 minutes for fingers 10 to 15 minutes for hands 15 to 30 minutes for arms 30 to 45 minutes for the feet Because of the high heat input of the paraffin, the bath must be used judiciousy. If circuatory and sensory changes are present, the appication of paraffin shoud be made cautiousy. For such patients, we suggest the gove be aowed to buid up and the member removed from the bath unti the paraffin is coo. The member in the paraffin gove then shoud be again immersed for as ong as possibe. Aso, when there is insufficient time to aow the member to soak, a thick gove shoud be deveoped on the member and the gove wrapped in Saran Wrap or an equivaent to obtain the ongest possibe benefit from the heat. Remove paraffin from appendage. Discard used paraffin and pastic (if used). Phone (800) (626) Fax (626) Web: 5

CLEANING THE BATH Often Paraffin Baths are not ceaned as reguary as their use warrants. Whiteha Manufacturing now prepares an economica refi kit. To sanitize the bath, turn the high-heat switch on for a fu 55 minutes. The temperature wi rise to about 212 F (100 C). The bath shoud, in this manner, be sanitized when needed or according to hospita/cinic protocos. Again, the bath wi automaticay return to the operating temperature, the bath is thus normay sef-sanitizing. If there is a noticeabe amount of sediment in the bottom of the Bath, a the paraffin must be removed for proper ceaning. Therefore, periodicay, the Bath shoud be drained competey of the paraffin soution and the bottom of the Bath and the pexigas sats ceaned thoroughy. For this purpose, your Bath is suppied with a hoow drain ring that can be paced in the drain opening and which rises about haf an inch above the bottom of the drain. In this manner the cean paraffin can be drained into a container and the sediment wi remain in the bottom of the bath. After this is done, the Bath shoud be disconnected from the eectrica outet and the drain ring removed. The sediment and sudge may then be drained, the bottom fushed and the sats ceaned. The cean paraffin in the container shoud sti be in a iquid state and can readiy be returned to the Bath. Reconnect the cord to the eectrica outet and the Bath wi soon be ready again for the patient's use. This operation removes 1 to 3 pounds (0.45 to 1.36 kg) of paraffin from the soution and it shoud be repaced by adding fresh paraffin and oi to the bath. CHANGING THE FUSE Unpug the unit. Next, position the unit to aow access to the rear of paraffin bath. Locate the fuse hoders at rear of the unit. Depress the fuse hoder caps with the use of a common bade screwdriver or fingers and rotate countercockwise approximatey 90 or unti the cap becomes oose. Remove the fuse hoder cap, exposing the gass fuse. Remove the bown fuse. Once the od fuse has been removed, repace it with a new fuse of the same type and amperage. Reinsta the fuse hoder cap by depressing and rotating cockwise approximatey 90 and ensure that the fuse hoder caps are secured. Turn the unit on via pugging it in to an eectrica outet. Aow the wax to warm up to the operating temperature and use as required. PARAFFIN REFILLS Whiteha Manufacturing can provide refi paraffin wax (Paraffin Oi sod separatey and can be purchased through your therapy products deaer). If the factory paraffin is not used and the paraffin is purchased esewhere, it is most important that 126 F (52.2 C) meting point paraffin be obtained. If this is not done, the Bath wi not operate at a high enough temperature to keep the paraffin iquid or, if adjusted to overcome this, wi be too hot for use by a except the strongest patients. 6 Phone (800) (626) Fax (626) Web:

Dickson Paraffin Bath FAQ 1) Breakers kick out when paraffin bath is pugged in: If fuses in paraffin bath did not aso bow out, there is too much oad on breaker. Try another eectrica outet. 2) Fuses bow when pugged in: There is a short circuit in the unit. The unit must be opened up for repairs. 3) Operating Temp ight does not turn on when pugged in: First check the fuses to see if they are bown. Next, check the circuit breaker on the buiding to see if it has been tripped. Third, the green ight may be broken. 4) Operating Temp ight is dark even though the paraffin bath is pugged in and is meting wax propery: The green ight (see No. 3 above) is no good or has been wired incorrecty. 5) Paraffin bath gets hot enough to get to the sanitize (high heat) temperature, mets the wax, but won't coo down: Bad high-temp overheating sensor ( or L- 200) or the timer coud be stuck ( ) 6) Bath wi not get to the sanitize temperature: Bad ow temp overheating sensor ( or L- 145) or bad high temp overheating sensor ( or L-200) or heating eement needs to be repaced (see parts ist). It is aso possibe that the unit has been wired incorrecty. 7) Bath goes to high, 200 F+ or 93.3 C+ but proceeds to coo down to room temperature Check adjustabe operating thermostat on the back of the unit (PB-107) or remove front cover (PB-104 & PB-105) and make sure thermostat is turned a the way cockwise. If the temperature does not rise in 1 to 2 hours, the heating eement (see parts ist) is bad or it has been wired incorrecty. Aso, the unit may have a bad capiary thermostat ( ) 8) Timer is stuck: Remove the knob, oosen the nut sighty and try the timer again. If it sti is stuck then the timer is bad ( ). 9) Wax is not meting a the way: The wax in the paraffin bath must reach 200 F+ or 93.3 C+ when meting the wax for the first time. In order to fuy be sure that the unit has reached the proper temperature, make sure the timer has been through at east 2 cyces (3 cyces for arger units). If the wax sti does not met, then the wax may be bad. 10) Od wax not meting propery and hardening over time after continua reuse: If the wax is at a temperature range of 127 to 130 F (52.8 to 54.4 C) and has been continuay reused for months, then it is ikey that the oi content has been depeted from the wax. Add oi or get new wax. If the wax in the bath is partiay meted then a new heating eement is not needed. If the wax goes competey soid, then they wi need a new heating eement. (see parts ist). 11) Wax is too hot for patient and the unit is at owest possibe operating temperature (126 F or 52.2 C): Either different wax needs to be purchased with a ower meting temperature or a temperature accimation procedure can be foowed. This procedure invoves dipping the patient's hand from the fingertips to the first knucke, removing and waiting about ten seconds for the wax to coo. Next, dip the patient's hand from the fingertips to the second knucke (proceeding to cover up the first ayer of wax and effectivey insuating the hand from some of the heat). Continue to buid the wax up incrementay by sma amounts. OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION: Mode S is an od reference to current modes PB-107 Mode K is an od reference to current mode PB-104 Mode BB is an od reference to current mode PB-105 Mode H (no onger being manufactured) is referring to an od PB-104 without a drain. The sanitize mode is turned on with a timer. Standard operating temperature is 126 to 130 F (52.2 to 54.4 C) Lowest operating temperature is 126 F or 52.2 C. Beow this temperature, wax wi harden (if id is removed from the unit or power is off) A capiary thermostat is attached to the temperature contro. This device contros the temperature with a mechanism that invoves a tube fied with oi. The temperature heats up the oi in the capiary, and the hotter it gets, the higher the oi rises up the tube. There are 2 overheating sensors in a modes. The L-145 is the ow imit overheating sensor. This sensor wi turn the unit off when it gets in the range of 145 to 155 F (62.8 to 68.3 C). The other overheating sensor is for the sanitize mode. This sensor wi not aow the unit to go past 200 F or 93.3 C. Timer is ony to be used to turn on the sanitize sequence in which the temperature of the wax wi approach 200 F or 93.3 C. A units are simpy turned on by pugging them in.
