1 WS4936/WS4936EU (433MHz)/WS8936 (868MHz) Series Wireess Smoke Detector Instaation and Operating Instructions Read this instruction sheet thoroughy before instaation and use of the WS4936 / WS4936EU/ WS8916 Introduction The WS4936 / WS4936EU / WS8936 is a wireess photoeectric smoke detector with a fixed temperature and rate of rise heat detector, and an interna piezoeectric aarm. Four versions are avaiabe: US version (UL), Canadian version (ULC), Internationa version (EU), and Austraian version (AUS). NOTE: Heat detection based on rate of rise has not been investigated by UL/ULC. NOTE: AU and EU versions do not incude a fixed temperature heat aarm, but DO incude a rate of rise aarm. HUSH/TEST BUTTON Operation Approximatey every 7 to 8 the unit tests for a smoke or heat aarm condition. During this sequence the unit aso performs sef diagnostics, and checks for tampers and fauts. During norma operation the green LED wi fash every 12 and the sounder wi not sound. Smoke Aarm The smoke detector wi go into aarm when the signa eve exceeds the aarm threshod and automaticay restore when the signa eve fas beow the aarm restore threshod. During an aarm the LED wi fash 1/ and the sounder wi sound the evacuation tempora pattern (UL, EU, ULC). Aarm Siencing This smoke aarm is provided with an automaticay resettabe aarm siencing feature. When the sensor is in aarm, by pressing the Test/Sience/Reset button it wi sience the oca annunciation of the aarm and transmit an aarm restora event to the contro pane. The LED wi fash every 8 (for up to 10 minutes) to indicate the aarm has been sienced. The fashing LED wi stop when the unit returns to norma operation. The aarm sience feature has a fixed time setting that desensitizes the smoke aarm for 8 minutes. Aarm siencing does not disabe the smoke aarm but rather reduces its smoke sensitivity. Foowing the sienced period the smoke aarm restores automaticay to its intended operation. If smoke around the unit is dense enough to suggest a potentiay dangerous situation, it wi stay in aarm, or may return to the aarm state quicky. Detector Troube When the detector has a genera faut, the yeow LED binks once every four and there is a chirp every 48. After 12 hours, the pane wi dispay a oss of supervision message. Sounder Status LEDs (do not puse the sounder and LED concurrenty) Green fash every 12 Norma Off Heat Aarm Heat Test Smoke Aarm Smoke Test Test Aarm Freeze 3 yeow fashes every Warning 4 Detector Troube Low Battery Detector Dirty Powerup Tamper Yeow fash every 4 Yeow fash every 12 Yeow fash every 8 Red, yeow, green, fash sequence Red, yeow, green fash sequence every 12 (press button to hush for 5-10 minutes) (press button to hush for 5-10 minutes) Off One chirp every 48 One chirp every 48 (press button to hush for 12 hours) One chirp every 48 One chirp at the end of the power-up sequence Off R001 Tabe 1: Detector and Status Indication 1

2 Detector Dirty Feature When the detector has been contaminated, the yeow LED binks once every 8 and there is a chirp every 48. Refer to the MAINTENANCE section for ceaning the detector. After 12 hours, the pane wi dispay a oss of supervision message. Heat Aarm The heat detector (UL/ULC versions ony) wi go into aarm when the heat signa eve exceeds the heat aarm threshod (135ºF/57ºC); and wi automaticay restore when the heat signa eve fas beow the heat aarm threshod (restore). The detector wi aso go into heat aarm if there is a rapid increase in the temperature over a short period of time. During an aarm the LED wi fash 1/ and the sounder wi sound the evacuation tempora pattern (UL, EU) or continuous beeps (ULC). Tamper The remova of the detector from the mounting pate initiates a tamper transmission. The tamper condition is restored after the detector is mounted on the pate. Wireess Transmissions A supervisory message is transmitted at 64 minute intervas (12 minutes in EU mode) to the contro pane. If the signa is not received the contro pane determines that the detector is missing. The detector transmits the foowing: Aarm / Aarm Restore - (heat or smoke aarm). Transmitted at time of occurrence. Tamper / Tamper Restore - (tamper switch activated) 10 maximum deay on restore before transmission. Low Battery - (battery votage fas beow threshod). Battery votage is tested & transmitted at the time of a supervisory or other transmissions. Troube - (detector faut or sensor compensation imit reached). Troubes are transmitted at the time of occurrence (one troube per supervisory interva). Batteries NOTE: The batteries must be repaced by service persons ony. The wireess smoke heat aarm is powered by 3 AAA Durace Proce PC2400 or 3 AAA Energizer E92 batteries (incuded). The detector reguary checks for a ow battery. If a ow battery is detected, the transmitter sends a ow battery message to the contro pane, which dispays the detector's ID at ow battery. In addition, the yeow LED of the detector wi bink every 12. The detector's sounder wi chirp every 48 (yeow LED continues to bink) unti the batteries are repaced. Pressing the hush button wi sience the chirps for 12 hours, if no other troube conditions exist. The batteries shoud be repaced WHEN the chirps begin. Be sure to repace the batteries with fresh ones. Battery Instaation and Repacement To repace batteries: 1. Remove the detector from its mounting base by twisting the detector countercockwise. Remove and dispose of the batteries according to oca reguations. 2. To ensure a proper power-down sequence, wait a minimum of 20 before instaing new batteries. 3. Insta 3 new AAA batteries (avaiabe from a oca Durace or Energizer deaer) in the battery compartment. If the batteries are incorrecty inserted, pease remove them carefuy with a non-conductive too and correcty re-insert them. BATTERY COMPARTMENT 4. Re-insta the detector on its mounting base by turning the detector cockwise unti the mating marks aign. 5. After the power-up sequence, the green LED shoud bink once every 12 to indicate norma operation. If the batteries are not instaed correcty, the detector wi not operate and the batteries may be damaged. If the detector does not power up, check that the batteries are instaed correcty and fuy charged. 6. Test the detector (as described ater). CONSTANT EXPOSURES TO HIGH OR LOW TEMPERATURES OR HIGH HUMIDITY MAY REDUCE BATTERY LIFE. Instaation Instructions The WS4936 / WS4936EU / WS8936 Series wireess smoke detector sha be instaed and used within an environment that provides the poution degree max 2 and overvotages category II in NON HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS, indoor ony. The equipment is designed to be instaed by SERVICE PERSONS ony; (SERVICE PERSON is defined as a person having the appropriate technica training and experience necessary to be aware of hazards to which that person may be exposed in performing a task and of measures to minimize the risks to that person or other persons.) 1. Smoke Detector Pacement On smooth ceiings, detectors may be spaced 9.1m (30 feet) apart as a guide. Other spacing may be required depending on ceiing height, air movement, the presence of joists, uninsuated ceiings, etc. Consut Nationa Fire Aarm Code NFPA 72 Chapter 11, CAN/ULC-S or other appropriate nationa standards for instaation recommendations. Do NOT ocate smoke detectors at the top of peaked or gabed ceiings; the dead air space in these ocations may prevent the unit from detecting smoke. Avoid areas with turbuent air fow, such as near doors, fans or windows. Rapid air movement around the detector may prevent smoke from entering the unit. Do NOT ocate detectors in areas of high humidity. Do NOT ocate detectors in areas where the temperature rises above 38ºC (100ºF) or fas beow 5ºC (41ºF). Do NOT ocate detectors directy above a sink, stove or oven. Do NOT ocate detectors within 5 feet (1.5m) of any cooking appiance. Insta Smoke detectors in accordance with NFPA 72, Chapter 11. 2

3 Smoke detectors sha be instaed outside of each seeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additiona story of the famiy iving unit, incuding basements and excuding craw spaces and unfinished attics. In new construction, a smoke detector aso sha be instaed in each seeping room. 3. Mounting Fit the detector inside the base by aigning it over the base (detector's aignment notch shoud be sighty offset from the mounting base tamper reease tab) then turn the detector cockwise unti it cicks in pace. 4. Test Unit NOTE: The centra monitoring station (if used) shoud be notified prior to the test being generated. This wi prevent a fase aarm and an unnecessary response from the centra monitoring station. Initiate test by pressing the test button for 5 minimum. Aarm activation is indicated by the fashing LED, the sounder, and transmission of the aarm signa to the contro pane. The detector restores to norma when the test button is reeased. NOTE: Aow a minimum of 20 after power up and, after test, aarm or tamper restore activations. Do not use test button when smoke is present. NOTE: If the detector is in one of the foowing states when a test is initiated; it wi not enter an aarm state. Tamper, (detector not instaed on mounting pate) Compensation Troube Other interna fauts that coud prevent a smoke or heat aarm 5. Device Enroment The 6-digit seria number ocated on the back of the smoke detector housing must be enroed into the aarm contro pane with Instaer programming. Refer to the receiver Instaation Manua for detais. For pacement tests remove detector from backpate for one (tamper) then reattach. Wait at east 30 for test resut before activating again. Owner's Instructions Fire Safety In The Home Most fires occur in the home, and to minimize this danger, it is recommended that a househod fire safety audit be conducted and a famiy escape pan be deveoped. 2. Mount Smoke Detector Backpate NOTE: These aarm devices shoud ony be instaed by a competent engineer / technician. This device shoud not be used with a guard. Once a suitabe ocation is found, mount the detector backpate. Insta the mounting base on the ceiing or on the wa (if oca ordinances permit) using screw ocations as required. Use the two screws and anchors provided. Maneuver the base so the screws are at the ebow of the screw sots and secure. Househod Fire Safety Audit 1. Are a eectrica appiances and outets in safe condition? Check for frayed cords, overoaded ighting circuits, etc. If you are uncertain about the condition of your eectrica appiances or househod service, have a professiona evauation. 2. Are a fammabe iquids safey stored in cosed containers, and in a coo and we ventiated area? Ceaning the unit with fammabe iquids shoud be avoided. 3. Are hazardous materias (i.e., matches) out of the reach of chidren? 4. Are furnaces and wood burning appiances propery instaed, cean, and in good working order? If in doubt, have a professiona evauation. 100 mm (4 in.) minimum 100 mm (4 in.) minimum Famiy Escape Panning There is often very itte time between the detection of a fire and the time it becomes deady. Because of this, it is very important that a famiy escape pan be deveoped and rehearsed. Every famiy member shoud participate in the escape pan. Study the possibe escape routes from each ocation within the house. Since many fires occur at night, specia 3

4 attention shoud be given to the escape routes from seeping quarters. It is essentia that escape from a bedroom be possibe without opening the interior door. Consider the foowing when making your escape pans: Ensure that doors and windows that open to the outside are easiy opened. Ensure that they are not painted shut and that the ocking mechanisms operate smoothy. If opening or using the exit is too difficut for chidren, the edery or handicapped, pans for their rescue shoud be deveoped. This pan incudes making sure that those who are to perform the rescue can prompty hear the fire warning signa. If the exit is above the ground eve, an approved fire adder or rope shoud be provided, as we as training in its use. Exits on the ground eve shoud be kept cear. Be sure to remove snow from exterior patio doors in the winter and that outdoor furniture or equipment does not bock exits. The famiy shoud have a predetermined assemby point where everyone can be accounted for; for exampe, across the street or at a neighbor s house. Once everyone is out of the house, ca the Fire Department. A good pan emphasizes a quick escape. Do not investigate first or attempt to fight the fire, and do not attempt to rescue beongings or vauabes as this takes up time. Once outside, do not re-enter the house; wait for the Fire Department. Write the pan down and rehearse it frequenty so that shoud an emergency ever arise, everyone wi know what to do. Revise the pan as conditions change; for exampe, when there are more or fewer famiy members in the home or if there are changes to the house. Make sure your fire warning system is operationa by conducting weeky tests. If you are unsure about system operation, contact your smoke detector instaer or deaer. DSC recommends that you contact your oca Fire Department and request further information on home fire safety and escape panning. If avaiabe, have your oca fire prevention officer conduct an in-house fire safety inspection. Testing Your Smoke Detector Foow the test procedure described here or contact your smoke detector deaer or instaer for testing instructions. DSC recommends that you test the entire aarm system at east once a week to verify the operation of a system functions. Smoke Detector Unit Test Initiate test by pressing the test button for 5 (min.), the sounder makes cicking noises during this time. Press the button unti the unit aarm sounds, an aarm shoud be sent to the contro pane. When the button is reeased, the aarm shoud cease. If this does not occur, ensure batteries are the correct type, in good condition and are instaed correcty (see 3. Insta Batteries in the Instaation Instructions section). Upon competing the functiona testing of the smoke detector, check the unit s sensing chamber to ensure proper operation. To test the sensing chamber, wave a it cotton wick or punk stick around the outside of the unit unti a generous amount of smoke enters the sensing chamber or the unit aarms. If the smoke detector does not function propery, ca your smoke detector instaer or deaer for service. Owner s Maintenance The smoke detector is designed to require minimum maintenance. If the case becomes dusty, vacuum with a sma brush attachment. If the case is greasy, wipe the case genty with a soft coth sighty dampened with soapy water. Never disassembe the smoke detector; there are no user serviceabe parts inside the unit. You may ony remove detector from backpate to repace batteries if not serviced by instaer. When repacing the batteries, foow the instructions specified within the Instaation Instructions, Item 3 Insta Batteries. Never paint the unit. Paint may prevent smoke from entering the unit. If you are panning renovations or repainting, contact your instaer and ask that the unit be temporariy removed unti work is compete. If the unit is ocated in an area where it is exposed to high eves of dust or insects and causes fase aarms, it may require service; contact your smoke detector instaer or deaer.
