I was born in the cottage and spent a very happy childhood there, says the current owner. As well as being a wonderful family home, the property also lends itself to entertaining. Guests often say that Old Timbers runs in a different time zone, as it always feels like being on holiday there, it has such a welcoming and magical atmosphere. Full of character with exposed beam and brickwork and a King/Crown post, the property possesses a fine sense of history. There are so many nooks and crannies, individual features and historical quirks which contribute to the story contained within the walls and grounds of the Old Timbers, says the owner. I have always loved to sit on the window seats in the winter with the fire roaring and the rain battering against the window panes. The property is brilliant for entertaining, and my parents hosted many huge parties there, from New Year s Eve celebrations with huge vats of various curries, to summer barbecues with homebrewed beer when guests would sit outside and chat long into the balmy evenings. This plot has been inhabited for thousands of years, the owner continues, and we even found a Palaeolithic scraper buried underneath the old apple tree, which now sits in Tenterden Museum. A spring runs down at the bottom of the garden, which may have been of spiritual significance to peoples of earlier times. The property itself used to be an iron smelting mill, of which the pulling stone and corner stones from the kilns still sit in the gardens. The gardens themselves are quite remarkable, too. The front garden is mostly laid to lawn, says the owner, with flowers and yew tree topiary. To the rear of the cottage are further lawns with vegetable patch and herbaceous borders, and a bower and pergola. The courtyard patio area is lovely is summer, when we spend seemingly endless evenings socialising outdoors. The playful topiary to both the front and rear of the property captures some of the sense of fun inherent to life at Old Timbers, and contribute to the character of this unique home. Newenden village has much to offer too. Newenden is the first and smallest village in Kent, says the owner, carrying its port and market heritage in the old centre of the village, a conservation area which sits within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village is friendly with a strong community spirit centred around the local pub, all set amidst stunning countryside. I shall miss everything about Old Timbers. It is believed to date back to the 1450 s and primarily constructed from recycled ships timbers from which the name Old Timbers is derived. There are regular bus services in Northiam to Hastings, Rye, Tenterden, Ashford and Canterbury. The area is full of history with an array of tourist attractions including the popular Great Dixter House & Gardens in Northiam. The nearby Sussex Border Path provides access to walks through local countryside, whilst water-sports and sailing can be enjoyed at Rye Harbour and Camber Sands. All within a 10 mile radius.
