4 Guide for first time exhibitors. 1. Do not display more or less objects than required in the schedule, this means instant disqualification. 2. Read the wording of the class requirements carefully. 3. No fruit or vegetable should be polished. This destroys the natural bloom. 4. Vegetable roots must be washed to remove any traces of dirt. 5. You can either stage your fruit and vegetable exhibits on a white paper plate or for larger items, directly on to the show bench. Alternatively, you can cover a board with plain black fabric. 6. All your fruit must have their stalks intact. The same for tomatoes. This applies to some vegetables. Check the schedule for requirements. 7. Show things of equal size and shape, one giant item with two medium-sized will not help you win. 8. Entries should be clean, free of disease and undamaged. 9. Beans: The judge is looking for no seed showing through the outside shell, a clean snap when broken, straight and with the stalk attached. 10. Cabbage: Good solid well grown heart, no bugs. 11. Beetroot: Good clean smooth skin, good inside colour, cut leaf stalks to Potatoes: Of medium even size 7-8oz each. 13. Shallots: Ripe, firm bulbs with a thin neck. Pickling shallots the same but no more than 1-inch diameter. 14. Tomatoes and chilli peppers, good colour, even sized with stalks attached. 15. Onions: Clean, dry, with tops cut and tied. 16. Herbs: Fresh healthy and clean. Tie into a bunch, place into a container of water. 17. Flower Stems must show flowers only. No seed heads or berries. 18. Foliage growing naturally from the flower stem is allowed. 19. The vase should be in proportion to the display. You get no extra points for using Gran s best china. 20. You may use packing material to keep stems in place, but don t add bows or anything similar. 21. Exhibits are judged as they are, not how the buds will look in a week or how they were when you picked them Friday morning. About 70% of buds should be in bloom. 22. A vase must have water in it when judged. 23. Pot plants: Judges are looking for a sturdy, nice circular and shapely specimen. Flowers must be fresh with clean unblemished leaves, clean pot, no rubbish on the surface and a clearly written nametag. 24. It may be illegal to pick some wild flowers from the countryside, if in doubt ask or see Although by no means exhaustive, we hope these points will be of use to you. The committee really hope you will be tempted to have a go this year. Remember, its great fun! 2
