It must not reiterte existing product forms. 2) Good design needs to mke product usble; tht s wht products re bought for, fter ll, to be used. 3) Good design needs to hve n esthetic dimension, since the fscintion this engenders is n integrl constituent of product s usbility. 4) Good design needs to enhnce product s bility to explin itself. It hs to render the product compellingly eloquent. 5) Good design is unobtrusive. However, in this, it differs from decortive works of rt. 6) Good design hs got to be honest. It does not ttempt to mke the product pper to be something it is not. 7) Good design needs to be enduring, since fshion is fickle nd encourges throwwy pproch. 8) Good design extends to every lst detil. Designers in the builders hrdwre industry hve for this reson long been working on how best to contin the forces exerted when doors re opened nd closed. FSB opted for technique tried nd tested in utomobile construction nd mechnicl engineering. Here, stress nd thrust re bsorbed using combintions of rubber nd metl s opposed to ll-metl berings. This proven construction method hs enbled FSB to come up with project fittings, in which 7 mm self-lubricting bering is flexibly ttched to bckplte screwed to the door. We hve been successfully mrketing this system for decde now. The specifictions for fire, smoke nd pnic doors re set forth in the following DIN (Germn Stndrds) provisions: DIN 4 02, Pts DIN 8 082, Pt DIN 8 095, Pts + 2 DIN Stndrds for fire-sfety furniture ddress design-engineering s well s function nd stress-rting criteri. 9 Lever hndles Selection guidelines When selecting nd ordering door furniture, there re number of guidelines to follow:.. DIN l.h., inwrd opening inside outside Hnding Doors re either right or left hnd, reltive to which wy they open. When ordering lever furniture with ded knob or spindle element locted on the outside, you should specify left or right. Indiction with use of digrm nos., 2, 3 or 4 would suffice. Johnnes Potente discovered this design nd redesigned it in luminium nd stinless steel. 13 Lever hndle 00 Aluminium Stinless steel During visit in 996 to the Chrité hospitl in Est Berlin, FSB stff cme cross lever hndle design they hd never seen before - n upright ovl grip yoked to cylindricl shnk. Alwys on the look-out for uncluttered designs, the visiting group duly reported bck to bse on returning to the Weserberg hills. FSB in-house designer Hrtmut Weise listened ttentively nd then set bout constructing model incorporting wht he hd herd. It plesed us no end, so we thought it might find fvour elsewhere too. 15 Lever hndle 02 Aluminium Some lever hndle types defy explntion s to either their origins or their mrket durblity. This is especilly true of FSB 02. It used to be known colloquilly s 'Reich-shpe' but is now described s n 'upright ovl'. It is sid to hve been first used in 926 in IG Frben s dmin block in Frnkfurt. It ws inspired by the rchitect Hns Poelzig. The version shown here ws dpted by Peter Assenmcher in 988. 16 Lever hndle 04 Aluminium For some time now design philosophy dubbed the 'new restrint' hs been doing the rounds. The nmes most frequently cited in rchitecturl hrdwre circles in this connection re Hrtmut Weise (FSB 025) nd Jsper Morrison (FSB 44). We would now like to mke further contribution to the new spirit of restrint with lever hndle design FSB 04 nd the new FSB 47 nrrow bckplte. FSB 076 subsequently becme the most copied hndle of the 20th century. 21 Lever hndle 020 Aluminium The 'functionl style' of the 50s found its clerest expression in the model FSB 020. Johnnes Potente designed this model in 953. His design s strong points re its physicl dynmism, its simple hnd shpe nd n ssymmetry tht gives the illusion of symmetry. When Johnnes Potente designed his 020 model, it ws his intention to provide visul relief from the strict lines of the door, 'inviting' the observer to tke hold of the hndle. FSB 020 is one of four models designed by Designer Johnnes Potente which becme prt of the permnent collection of the MoMA in New York. Loevy re hlf dozen door fittings by Rchlis, Grennder, Behrens, Wgenfeld nd Pul in which round shnk is combined with flt grip section. In the 90s, the Spnish designer Miguel Milá bent things round bit to produce the FSB 26 model. This time, though, we re dhering more to the originl 30s' designs. 23 Lever hndle 023 Aluminium Stinless steel When the Ulm Design College ws being built in the Fifties, the Swiss rchitect, sculptor nd designer Mx Bill with Ernst Moeckel designed lever hndle bsed on the rilwy crrige hndle common in Switzerlnd. It entered design history s the 'Ulm hndle'. Johnnes Potente took this s the strting point for the 023 model, still compelling lterntive to nonymous tubulr designs. 25 Lever hndle 025 Aluminium nturl colour nodised Stinless steel FSB 025 is the nucleus of the 'FSB Light' rnge of hndles. Its stylistic identity is clerly discernible. A stright hndle grip, fshioned in cross section like the outline of terdrop, slnts wy from the xis of the lever shnk to which it is connected. FSB 025 possesses n elegnt modesty tht will plese ll those keen on no-frills efficiency. With the gripping surfce tilted t 45 degrees, the hnd slips on esily; the hndle s globulr section mkes for comfortble nd secure gripping, llowing the door to be opened or closed with little effort. A centrl element in the design of FSB 025 is its vividly condensed ridge of luminosity. The effect of slenderness in this unfussy door hndle model is heightened by the wy light nd shde re mnipulted. 26 Lever hndle 026 Aluminium nturl colour nodised Lever hndle model FSB 026 dds rising qurter circle to the core fetures of the 'FSB Light' rnge, thus pointedly mking its mrk. 27 Lever hndle 027 Aluminium Stinless steel FSB 027 is regrded s stock item in the industry. It is lso disprgingly known s the 'shoe horn' model. The bsic design ws first mrketed by wehg, designed by Professor Mx Burchrtz. It sits extremely snugly in the hnd nd is notbly unobtrusive. FSB s 'shoe horn'-version ws designed by Johnnes Potente. 28 Lever hndle 028 Aluminium nturl colour nodised Stinless steel 37 FSB 028 is the most ornte of the hndles in the 'FSB Light' rnge. It s bold vrition on the FSB 025 theme tht nonetheless retins the vitl ergonomic fetures. This is design tht ctches the eye nd is just s good to hold. The undulr styling of the ctul hndle is both visully striking nd stimulting experience for the hnd. It s s elegnt silver embellishment s you could wish to see on ny door, nd it lso does the job of opening nd closing the door pretty well. 29 Lever hndle 029 Aluminium nturl colour nodised FSB 029 is specil moulded-to-the-hnd design tht ugments the other three hndles in the 'FSB Light' rnge. We only use the phrse 'moulded-to-the-hnd' for models tht meet our four Good Grip criteri to the letter. Hrtmut Weise mnged to modify the terdrop motif in such wy tht the thumb nd the forefinger hve somewhere to go nd the plm of the hnd hs mple bulk to grip on. This model incorportes few more grmmes of luminium thn the other three lighter designs in the 'FSB Light' series. But tht could not be voided, given wht the model hs to offer. And t the end of the dy luminium is fully recyclble. 30 Lever hndle 034 Aluminium The FSB 034 lever hndle ws Johnnes Potente s first mjor hit. It dtes from 952. Once the copyright lpsed, it ws imitted by the million throughout the world. It even hd to suffer being remodelled in grey plstic bck in the dys before plstic went technicolor. The Four Rules of the Grip viz. thumb guide, forefinger furrow, bll-of-thumb support nd gripping substnce re idelly ctered for. 31 Lever hndle 035 Aluminium Stinless steel In the utumn of 996, the Düsseldorf-bsed interior designer Heike Flkenberg invited us to recrete hndle design from the pst s prt of renovtion project. On the strength of sketches submitted, the FSB development deprtment did some milling work on FSB 076 to rrive t first pproximtion. 33 Lever hndle 046 Aluminium FSB 046 sports striking design. A stright gripping re is met by two distinct lines towrds the pivot point. The resultnt elongted cute-ngled tringle resembles 'bek', which is the nicknme this product of the Johnnes Potente design workshop cquired. 34 Lever hndle 8 05 Aluminium Aluminium The FSB 05 lever hndle hs come to epitomize FSB. It ws known s the 'Schneiderhndle' virtully from its conception in the mid Fifties. We cn only surmise s to why this model ws such success for Johnnes Potente in the Fifties (s it still is). Mybe it s becuse of the smooth design, the hrmonous interply between n unerring rectilinerity nd the clculted tringulr design motif towrds the neck. FSB 05 is one of four models designed by Designer Johnnes Potente which becme prt of the permnent collection of the MoMA in New York. 35 Lever hndle 052 Stinless steel The styling of lever hndle FSB 052 echoes the 'Brkel lightweight' with its dynmic sense of motion (the 07 model). Severl rchitects nd plnners urged us to hrness this hndle shpe for hevy-duty pplictions (e.g. in hospitls). The extended slight curvture towrds the door is conducive to elbow opertion should this prove necessry. This lever hndle set is idel for hevy-duty nd fire-door pplictions. In more recent times - in the 920s - it ws most likely the Wehg compny tht introduced the circulr cross-section to rchitecturl hrdwre. At bout the sme time the neighbouring Woelm compny ws lunching n identicl design it dubbed the 'stble door hndle'. FSB didn t lep onto the circulr bndwgon until the970s, when the mrket ws very well disposed to such moves. Lever hndle model FSB 070 hs dmittedly since found powerful rivl t home. 41 Lever hndle 075 Aluminium Stinless steel The 920s gve us three truly enduring door hndle designs. In Pris, the rchitect Mllet- Stevens cut tube in hlf nd mitred it bck together gin (FSB 076). The open end ws rounded. In Vienn, menwhile, the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein ws busy bending brss tube through 90 degrees (FSB 47). He, too, rounded off the end. Messrs Gropius nd Meyer, finlly, yoked squre section shnk to circulr grip (FSB 02). All three designs re still with us tody. In fct, two nd three times over s fr s FSB is concerned, viz. the Frnkfurt Model, Wittgenstein s hndle nd the Gropius/Meyer redesign by Alessndro Mendini. 80 Lever hndle 66 Stinless steel In 988 we got to know the young English designer Jsper Morrison, explined the Four Rules of the grip to him nd invited him to turn this formul into lightweight stinless steel hndle. He ccepted the chllenge nd turned up few months lter with the FSB 66 model. We were impressed. Hndles with thin grips hd been produced before but hd tended to be geometriclly prosic. The shnk nd tip of the hndle were originlly mde of rolled steel, this lter giving wy to cst luminum, whilst the grip itself ws finished in chunky blck plstic. The tool mkers nd R & D people t FSB joined forces to fshion this fmilir form out of steel tubing, which then simply hd to be rolled to point t one end. Strngely enough, though, when these horns re fstened to the bckplte they turn into door hndles s functionl s ny you could wish for: The lever cn be grsped t vrying heights. Thumb, forefinger nd plm nestle securely. The hndle fills the hnd when gripped; there is sufficient volume vilble. With this door furniture, FSB offers n lterntive to the symmetricl design philosophy bsed on circles, tringles nd rectngles. 89 Lever hndleset Ergo 7655 Aluminium Stinless steel This design is the splendid result of time tking reserch nd solves virtully every ergonomic problem ssocited with hevily-used doors. Why we ve clled it the 'Ergo hndle' is thus plin to see. The min benefits of the Ergo hndle FSB 7655 re: -The tringulr styling corresponds to the direction of motion of the user. -This ngulr shpe bsorbs the effort of operting the door. -The fullness nd tringulr cross-section of the design complement the shpe of the hnd s it closes to grip. Where n elbow is pplied, the left-right offers mple support. The FSB Ergo lever furniture set 7655 is turnbly fixed bckplte nd is suitble for fire doors (cc. to Germn DIN 8 273).
