Furthermore, the proposed site chnges nd progrmming will reduce the current mount of erosion during rin events, thereby directly improving the wter qulity of the nerby Shenndoh River. Design of this project begn with the development of multiple conceptul plns bsed upon feedbck received t public meetings regrding the esthetic vision nd functionl gols of the project. The conceptul/preliminry design considertions included site lyout, use of renewble mterils nd sustinble concepts, reloction of existing underground electric fcilities, site lighting, prking, pedestrin nd utomotive trffic flow, connection of the site to existing djoining properties, lndscping elements, erosion nd sediment control, nd storm wter mngement. A&A brought to the tble public involvement skills, plnning nd lndscpe rchitecture, grphic modeling nd rendering, environmentl permitting nd design, trffic nd trnsporttion design, municipl utility design, nd core site design. After successfully rezoning the property, A&A begn detiled design of the shopping center. Hving full spectrum of lnd development services enbled A&A to ddress the project from vrious ngles nd complete the entire design nd permitting in-house, which helped the development tem to meet n ggressive schedule for opening the project. A&A designed the site grding nd dringe, stormwter collection nd mngement, erosion nd sediment control, wter distribution system, snitry sewer collection system, South Min Street improvements, nd two trffic signls. Before construction could begin, severl existing structures nd improvements hd to be demolished; totl of 12 buildings were rzed, including two gs sttions, five office buildings, resturnt, nd multi-building motel, s well s pproximtely 4.25 cres of pvement nd severl hundred feet of snitry sewer nd storm sewer. The resulting retil nd dining environment is product of meticulous plnning nd design tht blends the best of sophisticted nd csul rchitecture to resemble nd enhnce the chrm of Blcksburg. 15

The intent of the Rdford Gtewy Lndscpe Project ws to crete hill-side lndscpe with visul impct tht nnounces one s rrivl into the City of Rdford. Additionlly, the lndscpe is interctive on vrious levels. The sense of rrivl begins more thn mile wy s one drives towrd Memoril Bridge. On this pproch, wht will be community holidy tree is visible top the project site. As one crosses Memoril Bridge, the project site is directly hed sloping upwrd more thn 25 feet bove the rod. On this slope re key elements such s welcome sign, n informtionl kiosk, nd severl ornmentl trees nd shrubs offering sesonl interest yer-round. Interction with the site is mde possible by series of switch-bck trils nd lndings tht offer pedestrins vrious views of Memoril Bridge nd the surrounding hillside setting. From these vntges, visitor cn look bck down one of the min rods entering the city nd out over the New River nd djcent lnd uses. Also, these lndings serve s pusing plces where one could red, meet friend, or relx in the shde. The design intent of these pths nd the ssocited lndscping is to crete the sense from the rod tht they re multiple prllel horizontl lines progressing from the street level up the hill nd terminting t the holidy tree re. 16

23 Downtown Revitliztions Town of Sturt, Virgini FIRM S RESPONSIBILITY: Lndscping Design OWNER: Town of Sturt 100 Ptrick Street Sturt, VA, Mr. Terry Tilley COMPLETION DATE: 2010 ESTIMATED CONSTRUCTION COST: $531,320 The Town of Sturt ws wrded Community Improvement Grnt by the Virgini Deprtment of Housing nd Community Development for revitliztion efforts within their Uptown nd Downtown Districts. Anderson & Assocites provided lndscpe rchitecturl services for design of n outdoor mphitheter within the Downtown District nd streetscpe design within the Uptown district, two spotlight projects within the Town s overll Revitliztion Project. Anderson & Assocites worked closely with the Town on the development of conceptul design for the mphitheter. We lso worked closely with consultnts designing the djcent Frmers Mrket, which the mphitheter stge nd comfort sttion tied into. The mphitheter, Frmers Mrket, nd comfort sttion red s semless outdoor venue. A&A developed drwings rticulting site lyout, grding nd dringe design, lndscpe design, mterils, estimtes of probble construction cost, nd construction documenttion for the mphitheter. Anderson & Assocites lso worked with the Town nd project engineer on the design nd development of streetscpe pln for Uptown Sturt. The streetscpe design included hrdscpe design, site furnishings, lndscping, sidewlk repir, signge, nd generl lighting design. We worked with the Town to identify design priorities nd preferences nd provided the Town with drwings rticulting site lyout nd dimensions, grding nd dringe, mterils, lndscpe design, required demolition, estimtes of probble construction costs, nd construction documenttion for the streetscpe improvements. 17
