Yu can still plant flwers like alyssum, aquilegia, bellis perennis, begnia, snapdragn, calendula, carnatin, pansy, vila, lbelia, primula, rnamental cabbage, Shirley pppy, delphinium, dianthus, fxglves, gdetia, gazania, nictiana and viscaria. Specific Types: Camellias: June is when the flambyant camellias cme int blm. Fr an extended flwering perid, select sme varieties that will flwer later in August and September and ges right thrugh t spring. Be sure t water camellias very deeply nce a week. Vygies: These are super ppular in spring but by that time they have becme scarce in nurseries as everybdy wants them. S jump the gun and buy all kinds f vygies nw t plant in thse neglected and dry areas f the garden, like a pavement. They will be cvered in satiny flwers frm late winter. Liliums: Liliums are available this mnth but need t be planted immediately as they have a shrt shelf life. Select nly plump, healthy lking bulbs, and plant int well-cmpsted garden beds, r pts; ensuring that the sil has perfect drainage. After planting ut, mulch their rts t prtect them frm cld, and nce grwth emerges prtect the delicate new grwth frm severe frst with a plant cver. In very cld regins, put ff planting liliums until spring, r plant them int cntainers and place them in a warm and prtected place. Rses: June is the mnth t plant a new rse garden r add mre varieties t yur existing cllectin such as new r bare rt rses. By planting new rses nw, yu give them a gd chance t get established thrughut winter and ready fr slid grwth and flwering int spring. Pick a mix f clurs and armatic rses, placing them in a well prepared garden bed. Prteas: Prteas in the prvince are lking particularly grgeus right nw s pp in t yur lcal accredited garden centre and pick sme up. Cnifers: June is the best mnth t transplant cnifers and t prune and tidy them up. Dig the new hles first and make sure that yu plant them at the same depth that they were grwing befre transplanting. Add generus amunts f cmpst and a gd dressing f bne meal t the planting hles t encurage new rt grwth. Ensure that the transplants are firmly planted in their new psitins and staked if necessary. Water the plants thrughly after planting, and mderately thereafter. Fruit Trees: June and July are als gd mnths t plant ut new fruit trees. - Inside: A great way t bring sme clur and life t yur indr rms this mnth is t get sme lng-flwering bright cyclamen. Grup several tgether in a large cntainer t disguise the individual pts and camuflage further with sme dried flrist mss as a finishing tuch. Cymbidiums rchids are anther ptin t prvide many mnths f clur. After keeping them indrs frm June t September, they can be planted in a prtected area f the garden r n a sheltered pati. Cymbidiums shuld nt be kept in a draughty area, but they d require gd air circulatin arund the plants. - Feeding & Spraying: Give yur plants a gd dse f rganic plant fd/fertilisers like Seagr t help keep pests away and t keep yur plants strng and healthy thrugh the winter mnths. The fllwing shuld als be taken int cnsideratin: Outside: Lawn: During winter it is very imprtant that yu get n tp f yur weed situatin befre they spread int new areas in yur garden. Yu can find a wide range f bradleaf weed killers like Banweed MCPA, Hrmban APM and Turfweeder APM at yur lcal garden centre. 3:1:5 Fertiliser is als a must this time f the year t feed yur lawn. Just make sure yu water the lawn well after yu have fertilised.

5 Vegetables: Make sure yu keep yur winter vegetables well fertilised, feeding them with liquid fertiliser such as Wndersl All Purpse r Seagr every 2 weeks. These liquid fertilisers will help prvide all the necessary nutritin yur plants will need t grw fast and give yu a slid harvest. Watch ut fr black aphids n yur brad beans. Pick yur sweet peas regularly and feed every 2 weeks with rganic 3:1:5 fertilisers. Flwers: Deadhead and cntinue fertilising yur flwers with a water-sluble fertiliser. Feed yur Cymbidiums every third week with rchid fertiliser. Watch ut fr aphids, especially n yung flwer buds. Watch ut fr fungal diseases like rust and black spt n yur rses, pelargniums and geraniums. Spray the entire plant (under the leaves t) with a fungicide like Dithane M45 r Fungi Free. D nt stp spraying yur rses fr fungal diseases and the secnd is t make sure yur stakes are secure befre that dr t the windy seasn is left pen. Als make sure yu mulch well. Dn t mulch t clse t the stem, leave abut a 15-30cm gap all the way arund. This will help keep misture clse t the yung plants but will als help t fight ff frst in cld areas. Fruit Trees: Fertilise citrus trees this mnth with 3:1:5 r 8:1:5. Spray with a winter strength lime sulphur slutin when yu have finished pruning and spray the surface f the sil arund yur trees lightly as well. Turn ver the sil lightly arund yur fruit trees t expse fungal spres and insects - the birds will relish any expsed insects and the frst will kill ff the rest. Specific pests: Unfrtunately it is nt quite cld enugh t get rid f all the pests, s keep the fllwing in mind when tending t yur garden. Ø Watch ut fr snails eating new shts, especially n emerging bulbs. Sprinkle sme Snailban r Sluggem pellets arund. Ø Tackle ants as sn as they appear, befre they have a chance t breed and cause mre damage. There is a wide range f suitable prducts available frm yur lcal accredited garden centres t stp ants in their tracks, such as Ant Dust r Ant Free. Ø Keep spraying cnifers with kinr r Ludwig s rganic insecticide and cntinue t treat yur cnifers fr aphids by regularly applying insecticide granules r a similar prduct arund their rts. If yu are transplanting, spray them with Wilt-Pruf befre mving as this helps t prevent shck during transplanting. In the summer rainfall regins give yur plants a very gd saking every 10 t 14 days thrugh winter. Inside: Mve indr pt plants away frm cld glass windws and drs and keep them away frm cld draughts, as well as heaters. Mist spraying their leaves ften with tepid water and placing them in drip trays filled with damp pebbles will help t increase humidity arund the leaves; this is especially imprtant in dry inland areas and in heated rms. Water with lukewarm water and feed yur winter flwering pt plants regularly with water sluble 3:1:5. - Watering: June is nrmally quite a dry mnth, s yur garden will still need watering althugh grwth is slwer. Remember, water shuld always be used sparingly and nly when needed. The fllwing shuld als be kept in mind: Outside: General: Watering crrectly during very cld weather is vital, and althugh it is necessary t keep yur plants alive, verwatering r watering at the wrng time can be fatal. When watering, always d s later in the mrning when the grund has warmed up but make sure t d s befre afternn creeps in t allw the plants t drink and dry up as much as pssible befre freezing night-time temperatures set-in. This is where maintaining a regular watering prgramme is essential, especially checking that yur irrigatin system is adjusted apprpriately. Lawn: Lawn can get particularly dry during winter with the lack f rain and persistent sunshine and heat, s cntinue watering as needed. The weeds will nt be grwing t strngly nw, s allw yur lawn grw lnger s that it can make the mst f the reduced grwing cnditins the mre leaves the better! Citrus: Water citrus deeply nce a week t prevent bud drp. Flwers: It is very imprtant t allw yur rses and ther summer and autumn flwering plants time t rest in mid-winter, by nt feeding them and watering less. Inside: Reduce watering f pt plants that like t rest during the winter (i.e. tuberus plants and ferns). Als be mindful f heaters in the rm, as plants will nt enjy this artificial heat. - Frst: Winter is here s make sure all yur plants are prperly cvered and prtected. Mulching: Mulching yur beds t prtect the grund frm freezing is essential, especially in winter rainfall regins like the Western Cape. There are a variety f great mulches and sil rejuvenatin prducts n the market s drp by an accredited garden centre t pick up a tnic fr bth indr and utdr plants. Be sure t mulch yur flwer beds with cmpst, manure and bne meal. This will give them sme much needed prtectin frm the cld this winter by keeping sil temperatures up. It will als stp the misture in yur sil frm evaprating t quickly s yu will have t water less. Mve indrs: Yu wuldn t want t be left ut in the cld s mve tender plants indrs r int a greenhuse. Grund cver: Fr thse tender plants that cannt be brught indrs, prtect them against falling night temperatures with a light fleece r hessian cvering. Ensure that the grund is cvered with a layer f mulch, ld newspaper, r straw t prtect it frm frst in the very cld areas. In very cld areas, bubble wrap is ideal t insulate pts and cntainers. - Pruning: Althugh June signals the start f winter, still be very careful when chsing what needs t be pruned in yur garden because twards the end f June, plants start t grw again. What t prune: Trim/prune cnifers lightly t keep their shape being sure nt t trim ld wd. This shuld be dne every year t keep them lking neat and t retain their shape. Als remember t shake ut mst f the dead material frm the centre f the plant while yu are at it. In the warmer temperate, sub-trpical and winter rainfall regins yu can start pruning yur deciduus fruit trees and grapes this mnth. In ther clder regins, check that all yur pruning gear is in gd wrking rder fr pruning twards the end f June and July. Prune vines, peach, plum and aprict trees at the end f June. Other deciduus trees will stand bare, displaying their framewrk f branches perfectly, which will give yu the pprtunity t remve ld and diseased grwth, r lw and verhanging branches, but als t enhance their natural shape.

6 What nt t prune: Try nt t prune yur shrubs, trees and rses until after the 21st as they shuld respnd mre psitively twards the end f the mnth. Rses d nt need a lt f attentin this mnth; and they will need t be pruned in July, s d nt d anything t stimulate grwth until then. In extremely cld regins d nt prune yur rses until the end f July r early August. Leave tender plants and evergreens until spring t prune. - General Maintenance: June and July are garden tidying and pruning mnths s get ready t d hard-landscaping maintenance nw! Tidy up: Clean flwer beds, remve cllapsed plants and cut back anything that needs it. Tidy trees and shrubs by cutting ut any dead, diseased r damaged wd and remve any dangerus verhanging, brken branches that may fall n walls, rfs etc. Treat any slippery pathways with a mss killer, and make sure all yur yung trees and standard plants are securely staked. Clean ut: Use this slw-grwth time f year t clean ut garden pnds and bird baths. Clear drains and gutters f ld plant material that might clg them. It is als a gd time t lk at pssible drainage prblems and slutins t implement in summer. Water features shuld als be cleaned ut regularly f fallen leaves. Bring ut the birds: Put bird feeders ut and keep yur bird baths tpped up because ur feathered friends are lking fr fd and water at this time f year, s attracting them nw is easier than ever. Try cater fr the needs f fruit and seed eaters. Maybe even ask yur butcher t give yu a bag f bne meal fr the birds. Start a cmpst heap: Install a wrm farm r cmpst heap in a secluded crner f the garden and use it t recycle yur kitchen scraps, husehld paper waste and pruning trimmings. Cver yur cmpst heap with a plastic sail t prevent it becming water-lgged. Other garden chres: Treat timber benches, furniture and decks by sanding them dwn and sealing them with a preservative.
