2 The Great Suth Bay Oyster Gardening Prgram is designed t prvide everyday peple with the pprtunity t learn and participate in shellfish aquaculture practices within the cmmunity. Oyster gardening is the nn-cmmercial prductin f cultured ysters fr resurce enhancement, imprvement f water quality, and/r cnsumptin. Participants will learn in a classrm setting, and then put that knwledge t wrk by being able t garden the wrld famus Blue Pint Oyster. Lcated n the shreline f The Great Suth Bay in East Islip, NY; ur private yet accessible intertidal yster garden is the perfect place t start culturing yur wn ysters. Why shuld YOU get invlved in yster gardening? Oysters are a keystne species within the marine envirnment, which means they play a vital rle in the frmatin f a stable ecsystem In recent years The Great Suth Bay has seen a decline f wild yster ppulatins due t anthrpgenic surces such as verharvesting, pr resurce management and harmful sewage runff Gardening ysters in a regin that has seen the lss f its wild ppulatins is beneficial fr the ecsystem as well as the lcal cmmunity Oysters filter water as they feed which aids in imprving water quality Individual adult ysters can filter up t 50 gallns f water a day. Picture 20 prgram participants keeping persnal yster gardens f 1,000 ysters each. Their ysters, nce adults, culd filter up t 1,000,000 gallns f water a day! Oyster gardening prgrams are a great way t make new friends and enjy the utdrs all while bradening yur knwledge Getting invlved in this prgram can be yur way f giving back t The Great Suth Bay The Prgram Attend fur seminars Seminar 1: The Histry f Aquaculture in The Great Suth Bay Thursday June 1, 2017 at 6-8pm Seminar 2: The Hatchery Culture f Blue Pint Oysters Thursday June 8, 2017 at 6-8pm Seminar 3: The Nursery Phase f Blue Pint Oysters Thursday June 15, 2017 at 6-8pm Seminar 4: The Grw-ut Phase f Blue Pint Oysters Thursday June 22, 2017 at 6-8pm Field Experience Field wrk will begin after the cmpletin f Seminar 4: The Grw-ut Phase f Blue Pint Oysters Each gardener will be given 1,000 juvenile ysters t raise Grw-ut gear will be prvided t each gardener and returned t Great Atlantic Shellfish Farms LLC. when the field experience has ended Each gardener will cllect data n their ysters Grwth will be recrded twice a mnth and at least ne week apart Water temperature will be recrded Mrtality will be recrded 1 P a g e
