Captain Maness has wrked fr SSD fr 21 years. He has been assigned t bth f the cunty jails, patrl, POP, narctics, gangs, pre-emplyment, The Deputy Sheriff s Assciatin and Assistant t The Chief. Central Divisin will be his 4th area that he will cmmand. He has been Cmmander f Nrth Patrl, The Main Jail and Ri Csumnes Crrectinal Center. Earning a Bachelrs degree in Business and a Masters degree in Business with a fcus in Strategic Leadership, I wuld say that with all f this experience that we are in gd hands. Captain Maness is n stranger t Central Divisin. Having grwn up in the area, his parents still live here. He enjys caching yuth ftball in the Central Divisin area and his children attend schl here. These items need prtectin frm theft by burglars as well as yur family's lives. There are several ways t prevent burglary f yur hme. Sme f these are very inexpensive and can save yu thusands f dllars in item replacement. "The greatest weapns in the fight t prevent burglaries are light, time, and nise." Additinally, a light in the huse n a timer will make the burglar think smene is hme and deter him. Trimming the plants and shrubs in frnt f windws will allw extra light and prevent hiding places. An alarm system sunding ludly will make burglars run frm yur hme. Alarm systems can als alert the plice department as sn as they sund s they can catch the thief in the act. Neighbrs will als hear an alarm and will call the plice in this instance. A barking dg will als make rbbers think twice abut illegally entering yur hme---nt s much fr their safety, but because the neighbrs will hear it and get suspicius. Lcks A deadblt is the safest lck t have n all exterir drs, and the drs need t be installed tightly int the frame t make sure they are sturdy. Slid wd r metal drs are the safest ptin, thugh if yu have an external dr with glass in it yu shuld install duble dead blts that require a key t pen. This prevents a burglar frm breaking the glass and reaching thrugh t turn the lck and pen the dr. All windws and glass pati drs shuld als have lcks n them. Burglar Bars Safety bars---r, as they are cmmnly called, burglar bars---prevent the thief frm breaking glass in windws and drs t enter yur hme. This type f preventin is nw available with a quick release handle n the interir s, in the case f a fire, yu may safely exit yur hme. The quick release paddle is installed away frm the windw s a burglar cannt reach it, yet depressing it nly requires ne pund f pressure in case a child wuld need t activate it in an emergency. Burglar bars are als available in decrative styles with curved metal and spires n tp. Cnsideratins A neighbrhd watch is an extremely effective way t prevent theft in yur area. When neighbrs see any suspicius-lking persn, perhaps driving slwly dwn the rad and lking at huses, they can make a plice reprt and stay n watch t prtect each ther. Schl Resurce Officers Read t Students Central Divisin s Schl Resurce Officers Amelia Prad and Adrian Zuniga were asked t participate in this years Read Acrss America day at Isabelle Jacksn Elementary Schl. The du read Dr. Seuss There s A Wcket In My Pcket t Mrs. Beer s first grade class. Students enjyed the bk and pictures. After the bk reading, students were asked safety questins and they asked many related and unrelated questins. All students received a Junir Deputy sticker. Great jb guys!

6 Vehicle Burglary-A Crime f Opprtunity Vehicle burglary is mst ften a crime f pprtunity. Our wn carelessness is ften causing ur vehicles t be brken int as well as stlen; hwever, yu can minimize yur chances f being a victim by taking away the pprtunity. Here are sme tips t remember: Lck yur vehicle and take the keys Park carefully in well lighted areas Use anti-theft devices and alarms Clean it ut; d nt leave anything in it Remve the garage dr pener (they may beat yu back t yur hme and burglarize it) Utilize yur garage t park in, if pssible Reprt suspicius activity r persns t the Sheriff s Department at , r fr crimes in prgress call Lck up: An unlcked car is an pen invitatin t a car thief. Lck up when yu leave yur car and take the keys. Clse all windws-prfessinal thieves have tls that unlck cars thrugh the smallest penings. Lck yur car even if yu are making a quick stp at the gas statin, cnvenience stre r mini-mall. At night, park in well-lit areas with lts f peple arund when ut running errands. If yu have a stere with a remvable face plate, take it with yu. Lastly, install a gd alarm system n yur vehicle and reprt all crimes t law enfrcement. Make sure that yu have make, mdel and serial numbers recrded in case f theft. What s On Yur Phne? Cell phnes, smart phnes, PDA s...they re part f everyday life fr many peple. Fr sme, they are the cllectin and strage pint f sme f ur mst persnal and private pieces f infrmatin. Nw imagine if yu lst that phne and infrmatin alng with it...and yur phne was nt in a lcked r passwrd prtected status? It culd be devastating!
