2 FIRE PREVENTION POLICY This plicy applies thrughut Hrris Hill Schl. Hrris Hill Schl recgnises its legal respnsibility t cmplete a fire safety risk assessment, as part f its verall respnsibility fr the Health and Safety f all thse wh live in, wrk at, r visit the schl. RESPONSIBILITY It is the respnsibility f the Headmaster t ensure that regular fire drills are carried ut, that a fire register is maintained and that adequate measures are in place t prevent fire, including risk assessments f all areas f the site and buildings. It is the respnsibility f the Bursar t ensure that fire alarms are tested regularly, that clear signage and fire ntices are prvided thrughut the schl and that all gas and electrical appliances are mnitred fr safety n a regular basis. The Bursar als keeps recrds f Fire Safety Inspectins and takes advice frm the visiting Fire Officer. The Fire Officer visits the schl fr inspectin, giving written ntice f his intentin t inspect the premises. The Bursar recrds his visits and acts in accrdance with the advice received in the fire safety reprt. As a barding schl, the 4 Husemasters are t assist the Head and Bursar in taking preventative and prtective measures (including fire fighting and evacuatin). It is the respnsibility f all emplyees at the schl t take reasnable precautins t prevent fire. All visitrs t the schl are required t sign in at Receptin, where they are given a cpy f fire evacuatin prcedures. When running an event in schl, it is the respnsibility f the persn leading the event t ensure that fire exits are pinted ut and evacuatin prcedures made clear t any visitrs. DUTIES OF THE RESPONSIBLE PERSON The Bursar is the respnsible persn fr recrd keeping and is t keep recrds f the fllwing: The fire risk assessment and its review; The fire risk (preventin) plicy; Fire prcedures and arrangements; Training recrds; Inspectin f escape rutes; Fire practice drills; Certificates fr the installatin and maintenance f alarms, detectrs, emergency lighting and fire-fighting systems and equipment. 3 FIRE HAZARDS The fllwing fire hazards are identified: Smking Electrical Equipment Naked flame and gas appliances Prtable heaters Labratry equipment Lightning Flammable / cmbustible substances Arsn TO REDUCE RISK OF FIRE Smking The schl is a nn-smking site. Smking is nt allwed n any part f the schl site and signs are distributed arund the buildings t reinfrce this. Electrical equipment Electrical equipment is PAT tested every year. Electrical equipment is switched ff when nt in use and unplugged, if apprpriate, at the end f the wrking day. Cmputers are t be turned ff at the end f each wrking day less the main server rm. Care is taken t ensure that electrical circuits are nt verladed, by using nly fused extensin cables, which shuld be fully unwund. Extensin cables are never plugged int ther extensin cables and adaptr blcks are nt used. Extensin cables will be replaced ver time by extensin twers. Central electrical cut-ff pints are lcated in labratries. Naked flame and Gas Appliances The use f Bunsen burners is cvered by the Science Labratry risk assessment: all staff and pupils are trained in their safe use and must wear crrect safety clthing and gggles. Pupils may nt apprach naked flames withut staff supervisin. The Bunsen burners are regularly inspected and replaced as necessary. There are gas islatin pints separate frm the practical areas. Gas appliances elsewhere are regularly inspected and tested and the supply can be cut ff in an emergency. In the kitchen, crrect clthing must be wrn. The kitchen is cvered by separate risk assessments and safe cdes f practice. Prtable heaters Occasinally the use f additinal heaters may be required. These appliances are inspected and tested regularly. They are sealed units which are plugged in. They must be psitined at a safe distance frm any furniture and must never be cvered. Page 3
4 Labratry equipment All labratry equipment is regularly inspected and maintained in gd wrking rder, r labelled clearly as unserviceable, by Science staff. Science staff (and pupils, where apprpriate) are trained in its safe use; pupils are never allwed t enter a Science labratry unsupervised and may never use labratry equipment withut staff supervisin. All ptentially hazardus equipment and prcedures are used / carried ut with strict adherence t CLEAPSS guidelines. Lightning The schl s lightning cnductrs are inspected annually. Flammable / cmbustible materials. All new schl furniture shuld cnfrm t British Fire Safety Standards. Flammable r cmbustible materials are stred in accrdance with COSHH. Flammable materials such as chemicals are kept in a secure stre; stcks are inspected regularly and recrded and any bslete stcks are dispsed f safely in accrdance with CLEAPSS (HAZCARDs). All cntainers / strage areas are clearly and apprpriately signed. Safety screens are used when experiments with highly cmbustible materials are carried ut and there is a spark risk. Arsn Site security is mnitred and reviewed regularly. Visitrs are required t identify themselves and sign in at Receptin during the wrking day. N unaccmpanied visitrs are t be n site at any time. At weekends, barding and duty staff make regular checks f the site and ensure they keep lists f all thse wh are expected t be n site. Any strangers shuld be challenged, if it is safe t d s. In the event f any suspicius activity, the plice shuld be called. There is plenty f telephne access acrss the site and barding and duty staff carry mbile phnes. FURTHER MEASURES FOR FIRE SAFETY Escape rutes shuld never be blcked and fire safety equipment shuld never be bstructed. Crridrs and entrances are kept clear at all times; pupils and staff have designated space fr string bags, cats etc safely. At busy times (eg lunch queue) supervising staff will ensure that bags are nt left in crridrs r drways. Fire extinguishers, blankets and alarms are clearly signed and kept accessible at all times. Fire drs are installed at apprpriate pints arund the building, in accrdance with the advice f the inspecting Fire Officer; these are kept shut at all times. Emergency lighting f the fire exits is regularly tested. Smke detectrs are in use thrughut the building and these are tested termly and recrds f the tests are kept. Rubbish shuld nt be left adjacent t buildings. Bins are emptied n a daily basis. Larger exterir bins are securely clsed, never allwed t verflw and emptied nce a week. Page 4
5 Cmbustible materials including cardbard bxes are nt t be stred under stairwells r in attics. Strage in cellars and attics is t be minimised. Cellar and attic areas are t be peridically inspected. Fire extinguishers f different kinds (water, fam, pwder and CO2) are lcated strategically arund the schl site, accrding t the main type f fire risk psed. Mandatry signage arund the buildings, indicating fire exits, evacuatin prcedures, actin in case f an emergency is clearly displayed. The Bursar cnducts a walkabut, t check fr clear signage. IN THE EVENT OF FIRE Evacuatin prcedures are regularly practised at different times f the day and night, every half term. Fire ntices are distributed thrughut the buildings. Escape rutes are clearly marked. There are regular reminders f this infrmatin during the year. Fire alarms are electrnic sunders and sirens and are lcated strategically arund the building and clearly signed. Any member f staff wh discvers a fire shuld make an immediate assessment, sund the fire alarm frm a call pint (if nt already activated) and cntact the fire brigade by dialling 999. TRAINING Staff are trained in fire safety and recrds f the training are kept. Heads f Department risk assess their subject areas and review and update this with their staff regularly. ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE DISABLED If a pupil with a disability jins the schl, an assessment f need is made prir t his/her arrival and risk assessment is carried ut accrding t individual need. The schl has an evacuatin chute fr emergency evacuatin frm an upstairs rm. Ramps are available fr use shuld a wheelchair user need t be evacuated frm the building. All pupils are required t practise regular fire drills; in the event f a disability preventing independent respnse t a fire alarm, a designated member f staff wuld be respnsible fr the evacuatin f the disabled individual. LONE WORKING As the schl is als a place f residence, staff are encuraged t infrm the resident barding staff if they are planning t wrk at times when the schl is nt nrmally ccupied. They shuld sign in and ut, giving times f arrival and departure. Lne wrking is discuraged and it is recmmended that staff wrk during the hlidays nly at thse times when the ffice r receptin is staffed. Resident staff are all trained in fire prcedures. Page 5
6 OTHER USERS OF THE SCHOOL SITE (WHERE APPLICABLE) Any rganisatin r grup hiring schl premises fr their wn use hld their wn fire drills at different times f the day, using the regular evacuatin prcedures. Risk Assessments are available t these visiting grups prir t their arrival, s that they can make their wn independent risk assessments. COMMUNICATION OF THE POLICY This plicy is t be cpied t all heads f department fr disseminatin t their emplyees. It is t be kept available fr emplyees t see within departments. It is t be kept electrnically within the academic resurces area and n the staff area f the Engage prtal. It is t be kept available in the schl plicies file kept in the Staff Cmmn Rm and in the Bursary. Emplyees are als directed t read the emergency/fire evacuatin prcedures cntained within the Emplyment Handbk which is revised annually. Page 6
