3 INTRODUCTION DESCRIPTION OF FEATURES The Newtn Cntrl Panel-Pr is a class-leading pump cntrl panel with many unique features which has been designed by Newtn Waterprfing Systems t prvide the ultimate in pump peratin and diagnsis. The panel includes interfaces fr use with Newtn Victrn Battery Backup and Telemetry Systems, as well as cnnectins t whle huse alarm and mnitring systems. The Cntrl Panel PCB is split int tw separate circuits, ensuring that pumping will cntinue even if ne f the cntrl circuits shuld fail. This effectively means that the Newtn Cntrl Panel-Pr is tw cntrl panels within ne case, ffering unrivalled redundancy. Self-diagnstic prgrams test the pumps n a weekly basis t ensure crrect pump perfrmance. The appinted service engineer is autmatically infrmed f any detected prblem with either f the pumps if the Newtn Dialer telemetry system is either cnnected (Newtn Purchase Cde PA5) r installed within the panel (Newtn Purchase Cde CP7). A typical system is shwn belw: BB5 Battery Mnitr Battery Victrn Battery Backup unit Grid mains pwer supply 230V AC 13A Newtn Cntrl Panel-Pr 2 x Pumps with sequential pumping, duty assist & duty standby peratin The Newtn Cntrl Panel-Pr will perate a maximum f tw 750 W 230V AC pumps. The panel is supplied with a vertical water level flat switch and High Water Level Alarm flat switch. The panel is designed t be used with ptinal Newtn Victrn Battery Backup Systems, sized t suit the pumps and installed with sufficient battery pwer t ensure cntinued pumping during pwer utages. PANEL HIGHLIGHTS 1. Autmatic alternate duty cycle - Each time the main flat switch calls fr a pump t start, the panel will alternate the cmmand t each pump t share the pump wear. 2. Tw independent pwer supply inputs - One fr grid mains and the ther fr a battery-backed pwer supply via an apprved Newtn Victrn Battery Backup System. In the event f a grid mains failure, the panel autmatically switches t battery pwer. On pwer restratin, the panel will autmatically switch back t nrmal grid pwer mde and recharge the battery r batteries. 3. Alarm n pwer failure - Panel will alarm n mains failure. The mains fail beep will nt sund in mains fail until a pump peratin has ccurred, r, if the pumps are nt used, the sunder will beep after 12 hurs. This is t prevent unnecessary alarms, mainly at night. An alarm utput is sent t trigger the Newtn vice and text Dialer (included with purchase cde CP7) r hme alarm at the time f the mains pwer failure. 4. Autmatic pump duty assist - If ne pump cannt cpe with the vlume f water entering the sump, the secnd pump will autmatically start in rder t increase the pumping capability. The time perid befre the secnd pump starts is adjustable (master timer setting) t accmmdate different sized sumps. There is als the ptin t prevent bth pumps running at the same time if the system is running frm backup battery. 5. Autmatic current mnitring fr each pump - The panel checks that the pump is using the crrect current when the pump has been switched n. If the current is t lw r a pump cable has been discnnected, the panel will autmatically switch t the secnd pump. The current in Amps is displayed fr running pumps. As well as the panel audible alarm, an alarm utput is sent t trigger the vice r text Dialer (where fitted r included) r hme alarm/mnitring system at the time f a pump failure. There is apprximately a 30 secnd delay befre the sunder perates after a pump fault is detected. This is t allw the panel t check there is indeed a pump fault and t silence the sunder unless the fault is cnfirmed. 6. Autmatic main flat checking - If the main flat fails r becmes discnnected, the alarm flat autmatically takes ver as the main level cntrl flat (preset t 10 secnds). If in main flat fail mde, the panel will still alternate bth pumps via the alarm flat. An alarm utput is sent t trigger the vice r text Dialer in the event f main flat failure. 7. Autmatic alarm flat checking - An alarm checking signal is cntinually mnitred t cnfirm that the alarm flat cables have been fitted crrectly, nt been tampered with, r been discnnected. 8. Each pump has its wn, ttally separate electrnic circuit - This allws fr ne pump t still perate if a fault develps in the pump that culd damage the panel electrnics. An alarm utput is sent t trigger the vice r text Dialer in the event f a cntrller failure. 9. Autmatic testing f each pump every 7 days - Testing ensures the pumps are used each week and will reprt any prblems detected during the 3 secnd test with an alarm. Each cntrl circuit has its wn independent timer t ensure that each pump is tested at different times. 10. Each pump is cntrlled by a zer vltage slid state triac - The triac device is cntrlled by very fast switching electrnics that can detect the change t the 50 Hz cycle t initiate switching at zer vltage. Unlike mechanical relays r cntactrs, there are n mving parts t wear ut r generate arcing dust r welding f cntacts. This gives the cntrl panel a life duty in the millins f pumping peratins, unlike a mechanical relay that can be as lw as 100,000 cycles. 11. The panel mnitrs the pwer supply and will alarm if the incming grid mains vltage fails - The panel will give a lud beep nce per minute in grid mains fail mde. 4 DESCRIPTION OF FEATURES SET-UP OPTIONS 12. The panel mnitrs the pwer supply and will alarm if the current t each pump is t high r t lw - The panel autmatically checks that the crrect pwer is being used by each pump. If the pump is discnnected r a pump fuse has blwn, the panel will sund a lud tw beeps per minute. The alarm will als sund if the pump is using t much pwer. Must be reset by pressing the reset buttns r perfrming a full reset f the panel. 13. Alarm sunder ptins - Dip-switches n the sunder allw fr prgramming f up t 32 different alarm sunds with a fully adjustable vlume cntrl als included. 14. Engineer ptin t mute all sunds ther than high water alarm - This can be set by the engineer after a full panel reset. Hld dwn the pump 1 mute/reset buttn and then press the pump 1 buttn, then repeat this twice fr each pump. The display will flash up AUX SOUNDER OFF. This will stp any beeping ther than fr a high water level if the custmer requires it. 15. Each pump circuit has it s wn LCD display with a built in flash memry - This display will: A) Display and stre the pump cycles and hurs run in an independent flash memry chip fr each pump B) Display any alarms with the descriptin f the alarm, water level high, pump fault, high current, mains failure and sunder ff C) Display the pump that is running, the current f the pump and the backup battery vltage, allwing the engineer t mnitr pump efficiency and battery cnditin D) Display the vltage f the cnverter battery in bth grid mains and cnverter in use mdes E) Display if the panel has had the alarm sunder muted by user F) Pssess an engineer memry reset fr resetting all timers and cunters G) Pssess a service due setting t infrm the user that a service is due n the system (this functin can be selected by the engineer) 16. All flat switches are 12 VDC (lw vltage) - Via tw separate islatin transfrmers. 17. Each pump has a manual verride buttn and a reset buttn - The pump buttn can be pressed at any time t perate the pump and the reset buttn t reset the display after an alarm (will nt reset if pumping). 18. Display memry resetting 19. Sunder mute - If the sunder is beeping t warn f mains fail r pump fault, yu can mute the sunder by pressing each mute/reset buttn twice. T remind the user f a muted fault, the mute functin will cancel after 12 hurs. 20. Engineer reset f cunters and timers (engineer nly - see page 15). The Newtn Cntrl Panel - Pr is designed t be used with all r a selectin f the fllwing Newtn pumping ptins: A chice f Newtn manual pumps f 400 W and 750 W A range f Newtn Victrn Battery Backup Pwer Inverters t give cntinuatin f pumping via the panel during pwer utage Newtn Dialer, pre-fitted t cde CP7, that will alert up t 8 different landline r mbile phnes with either text r vice cnfirmatin f the sunding f the alarm Newtn PA50 High Water Level Alarm as a remte alarm in anther lcatin (requires twin cre cable cnnectin) Whle huse management system (supplied by thers). Hme autmatin relays are munted n the PCB t allw panel warnings t perate ther systems. The relays are cntacts vlt free. The relays perate fr 5 secnds n pump fault, water high r mains fail. Nte that a mains fail is NC whilst the thers are NO As mentined earlier, the panel has tw cntrl circuits; Pump 1 and Pump 2. Each circuit has a set f cntrl dip switches and a timer. The psitin f these is shwn in the diagram belw. 5 CONNECTING POWER, PUMPS & OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT CONNECTING POWER, PUMPS & OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT Grid mains pwer supply 230V AC 13A Alarm Flat Pwer Inverter (ptin) Newtn Cntrl Panel-Pr 2 Manual Newtn Pump 400 t 750W USER SELECTABLE DIP SWITCHES AND TIMERS Manual Newtn Pump 400 t 750W Battery Battery Main Flat OPTIONAL FURTHER BATTERIES Dialer CP7 Only Huse Alarm (ptin) The Cntrl Panel-Pr is supplied with the pump duty assist timers (shwn n page 7) set t 30 secnds fr Pump 1 and 40 secnds fr Pump 2. This is the ptimum setting fr the Newtn NP400 pump within a Titan-Pr sump chamber. The installer shuld test the system t ensure that ne pump cmpletes a pumping cycle within this set time, befre the secnd pump turns n t assist. Adjust the timers t suit. Always set the Pump 2 timer t be 10 secnds mre than the Pump 1 timer. The DIP switches are all set t OFF by default. With this setting the Duty assist functin will nly take place when the system has mains pwer. If the system is perating ff 12 VDC battery pwer, the duty assist functin is disabled s that the battery is nt drained t quickly. If the system is pwered by mre than ne battery with a cmbined strage f ver 380 Ah, DIP 2 can be changed t ON, allwing fr duty assist during pwer utages. If a single battery is used, we strngly advise nt t use duty assist and that the DIP switches are all set t the OFF psitin. Please see page 12 fr further infrmatin. ELECTRICAL CONNECTION INSTALLATION WARNINGS: THIS CONTROL PANEL MUST ONLY BE INSTALLED BY TRAINED ENGINEERS. BEFORE COMMENCING INSTALLATION, ISOLATE YOUR MAINS ELECTRIC SUPPLY. This prduct shuld be installed in accrdance with the relevant sectins f the building regulatins cde and the current editin f the IEE Wiring Regulatins (BS 7671: Requirements fr electrical installatins) and apprpriate statutry regulatins. As f April 2004, new installatins in the UK shuld be wired using the EU harmnised clurs fr the supply cnductrs. NEW COLOURS: BROWN = Live, BLUE = Neutral, YELLOW / GREEN = Earth This installatin MUST be earthed. This cntrl panel is nt waterprf, is f a metal cnstructin, and must be installed in a dry, well -ventilated area. Warning: It is imprtant t read and understand the cntrl panel instructins This Newtn twin pump cntrl panel has been designed t be wall-munted r recessed within the wall. When the unit is recessed int the wall, the ruting f all cables is als within the wall, making a neater installatin than if the unit is wall-munted. Cable entry is via the 7 cable glands n the bttm f the panel. An extensin wiring kit fr extending the distance frm the panel t the pumps up t 50 M is available. The purchase cde is PA-31 and is a special rder with a tw week delivery frm rder. Fr ease f maintenance in changing pumps, it is recmmended t nly have ne mains cable per 20 mm gland. Use the glands as indicated belw (numbered frm left t right): 1. Mains input cable 2. Pwer cnverter input cable 3. Pump ne cable 4. Pump tw cable 5. Main flat cable 6. Alarm flat cable. Ntes: Lw-vltage rated cables shuld nt be run in the same cnduit as mains (230V AC) cables. The panel must be earthed, nt just earthed via a mains cable with a plug fitted! Use the earthing pint munted inside n the bttm f the husing by the gland entry pints. If the sump chamber is full f water n first pwering up the panel, the alarm may sund and bth pumps may start in sequence in pump duty assist mde. When the water level is belw the main flat tp psitin, reset the panel by turning ff the pwer supply fr 5 secnds. On pwer up, the system will perate nrmally. These are fitted int the mtherbard terminals as shwn n page 10. The terminal cnnectrs allw fr quick cnnectin and discnnectin t the bard. Wiring can be cnnected t the terminal cnnectrs whilst they are fitted t the bard r away frm the mtherbard The Alarm Flat is the smaller Reed Pivt Switch and the Level Switch is the larger Vertical Actin Flat Switch. The Alarm Flat shuld be installed s that the switch is always clsed and nly pens when lifted upwards by rising water Bth the Level and Alarm flats have tw wires. The cnnectin f these wires is nt dependent n plarity and can be fitted t either f the terminals fr each cnnectin The Level Switch shuld be cnnected t the vertical discharge pipe f ne f the pumps at a height that allws fr the pumps t perate crrectly. If the switch is t high, the switch may nt perate until the water level in the sump is t high. If the switch is t lw, it is pssible that the pump remves all the water befre the switch has turned ff. 7 SIZING OF NEWTON VICTRON BATTERY BACKUP SYSTEMS CONNECTION OF NEWTON DIALER TO CONTROL PANEL As an apprximate guide, with 400 W pumps, ne can expect t pump abut 12,000 litres f water with a full NrthStar NSB 190FT battery. This figure is based upn a system with a new battery and the pumps perating t apprximately a 4 m head with apprximately 15 minutes between pumping cycles, allwing fr battery recvery time in between each peratin. Further infrmatin can be fund n page 3 f the Newtn Victrn Inverters Data Sheet. The default set-up f this cntrl panel has the pump duty assist disabled when the mains pwer fails, t prevent very high current draw frm the battery if running tw pumps tgether. This setting prtects the backup battery frm sudden discharge and will allw the system t pump mre water fr much lnger with the limited pwer supply available in the battery. The default DIP setting is OFF n all fur DIPs n bth the Pump 1 and Pump 2 DIP switches. If pump duty assist is required during a pwer failure, we recmmend that a minimum battery capacity f 380 Ah is used. This is achieved by cnnecting multiple batteries in parallel (4x 100 Ah r 2 x 191 Ah). T change the default setting, change DIP 2 n bth DIP Switches t ON. Nte: Battery perfrmance is dictated by many factrs such as the strage temperature and age f the battery, the rising main diameter, verall length, head and the number f bends, tees and elbws. Newtn Victrn Pwer Inverters have been designed t wrk with Newtn Pumps and have special sftware fr battery charging and inverter cling. All Newtn Victrn Pwer Inverters are tested and calibrated t very high standards befre being dispatched frm the factry and meet all UK safety requirements. Newtn Victrn Pwer Inverters include pwerful charging circuits and special cling fan cntrl sftware. Newtn Pwer Inverters have a three-stage charging circuit: Bulk - Fr when the battery is very depleted; Absrptin - Fr a final tp-up charge and Flat - A trickle-charge that replaces lst charge. The Inverters are silent except when in Bulk Mde. DIALER TRIGGER INPUTS PROGRAMMED INPUTS 1. Water Level High 2. Nt used 3. Pump Requires Attentin INSTALLATION OF POWER INVERTERS Pwer Inverters must be stred in dry cnditins befre installatin. Pwer Inverters must be installed in a dry cl area, with gd air circulatin and NOT directly abve the battery r sealed in an airtight bx. D nt install the Pwer Inverter near the head f a bed r ppsite a wall where smene sleeps. All installatins that have grid mains and generated mains pwer must be crrectly labelled, t infrm the user that bth pwer supplies must be islated befre maintenance. Pwer Inverters can cause electrcutin; take great care t islate mains and battery befre wrking n systems by unplugging them. Fllw the instructins included with the Inverter fr battery sizing and installatin. Althugh nly 12V, batteries have very high currents f 300 Amps plus, s if yu shrt the terminals with a spanner, ring r watch fr example, they wuld becme white ht in less than 1 secnd. Fr this reasn yu must remve all metallic rings, watches r any bject that may cause a shrt. If the battery is an pen vent type, yu must wear safety glasses and PPE t prevent acid burns. The Pwer Cnverter must nt have the mains pwer cnnected when fitting the battery cables. Jints must be dry and clean. It is very imprtant that the cnnectin is gd and secure, as a bad jint will heat up and cause the cable insulatin t melt (fire risk), the vltage t vary, and the Pwer Cnverter electrnics will be damaged. The battery terminals MUST be cvered by a tamper-prf methd and nt expsed. 4. Pump Mains Failure All warnings fllwed by press buttn 8 t acknwledge WARNING - Outputs frm the Cntrl Panel t the Newtn Dialer are +5V triggers. DO NOT SHORT TERMINALS TO +12V TO TEST, AS THIS WILL DAMAGE THE CONTROL PANEL PCB. Nte 1: Cnnectin f the phne line t the panel is nly required when the Dialer is fitted within the panel husing. The panel terminals receive the T & R wires frm the phne line and further T & R wires cnnect frm the terminals t the Dialer, effectively using the panel terminals as a junctin bx. 8 ENGINEER OPTIONS USER INSTRUCTIONS SERVICE DUE SETTING The engineer can select the service due functin by adding a jumper t bth service timer cntacts. This will time dwn frm 365 days t service due (will nt time days when the panel is nt pwered up). T reset the service timer, add jumper links t bth service timer and display reset links. Press and hld dwn the reset buttns until the display reads memry reset. Yu have t d this fr each pump display. If service due setting is NOT required d nt place the jumpers n the tw service timer links. See belw fr psitin f service timer & display reset jumper links. RESETTING COUNTER MEMORY AND SERVICE TIMES T reset the cunter and hur meters, link the display reset jumper and remve the service timer link. Press the rest buttn until the display reads memry reset. After resetting, replace the service timer link & remve the display reset link. CALL ENGINEER nly if this infrmatin is displayed in nrmal use fr lnger than 24 hurs 3. WATER HIGH ALARM - This warning happens when: A. The water level reaches the small alarm flat r the wires t the alarm flat have been cut B. The main flat has failed r the wires t the main flat have been cut C. Bth pumps have failed and n water is being pumped frm the sump chamber DANGER OF FLOODING - CALL ENGINEER. Check pwer is n t the Panel, check cables and flat switches, check any fuses. Requires bth reset buttns t be pressed t reset the warning 4. MAINS FAILURE - Grid mains t the Panel is ff and it is running n emergency pwer frm the Pwer Cnverter and battery. The alarm will beep nce per minute after a pump cycle during mains failure. Depending n the amunt f water flw, battery age and cnditin, the running time frm ne battery can vary frm minutes t days. Aut-reset n pwer restratin 5. PUMP FAULT - This indicates that ne f the pumps is either nt cnnected, damaged, pumping air, r an internal pump prtectin fuse has blwn (10 A) due t a majr pump fail. The alarm will BEEP twice per minute, 30 secnds after the pump failure. CALL ENGINEER. Press bth reset buttns t reset 6. PUMP CURRENT, BATTERY VOLTS - This infrmatin is nly displayed when a pump is running. The infrmatin is fr the engineer t mnitr the current that each pump is using and the cnditin f the backup battery vltage. This infrmatin is als useful in mains fail mde t check the back up battery vltage when a pump is running. The vltage in nrmal use n grid mains shuld be Vlts, this indicates the back up battery is being charged 7. SOUNDER OFF - This infrmatin warns the user the alarm sunder has been MUTED. If the alarm sunder is active and cannt be reset, CALL ENGINEER 8. DISPLAY BACK-LIGHT - The back-light will be n lw when the panel is pwered up. The back-light will g bright t indicate which pump is running, the display will shw the pump current and battery vltage 9. SERVICE DUE - This infrmatin indicates the service ptin has been activated by the engineer and the annual pump service is nw due. CALL ENGINEER Nte, warning infrmatin r alarm sunders can be reset by pressing the reset buttns (it will nt reset if pressed while the display back-light is bright r the pumps are running). The reset will nly happen if the reasn f the warning has been crrected. If it cannt be reset, CALL ENGINEER. T MUTE the sunders: Each display has its wn internal warning sunder and the panel has ne main alarm sunder. ONLY MUTE THE SOUNDERS IF YOU ARE SURE. CALL ENGINEER IF THE PANEL INDICATES A FAULT OR SOUNDS AN ALARM YOU CANNOT RESET. T mute an alarm: Press the mute buttns twice n each pump when the pumps are nt running. This will mute the sunder fr 12 hurs nly. T remind the user f a muted fault, the mute functin will cancel after 12 hurs. YOU CAN ONLY MUTE THE SOUNDER WHEN THE PUMP(S) ARE NOT RUNNING. TO CANCEL MUTE (sunder ff), turn bth grid mains and inverter mains ff fr apprximately 5 secnds. This will reset the mute functin. OPERATING A PUMP MANUALLY. T perate each pump manually, press the pump buttn. The display back-light will brighten and the display will shw pump current in amps and the backup battery vltage. Bth pumps can be perated if the panel is perating n mains pwer. 9 SYSTEM & PANEL MAINTENANCE SYSTEM & PANEL MAINTENANCE EVERY MONTH 1. Test the water high flat each mnth by lifting the flat switch in the sump chamber. The sunder will sund and ne f the pumps will start fr 10 secnds. When the pump has stpped, press bth reset buttns fr apprximately 5 secnds each (if a Dialer is cnnected answer the call and press buttn 8 n the phne t acknwledge alarm) 2. Press each pump buttn fr apprximately 5 secnds in turn t check each pump is wrking (the panel des an autmatic check each week fr a 3 secnd test n each pump) 3. Check the panel displays fr any warnings, if any, nte and press bth f the reset buttns fr apprximately 5 secnds and check display again after the next pumping cycle. If the warning has nt cleared, cntact yur service cmpany EVERY 6 MONTHS 1. The panel des nt cntain any serviceable items. Wipe the utside f the panel case with a clean, dry clth EVERY 12 MONTHS 1. The system will require servicing by a qualified service engineer t check: A. The cnditin f the pumps fr wear r lss f efficiency B. The service/pump timers C. The amunt f water pumped by the system since the last service D. The cnditin f the sump and any depsits in the bttm f the chamber E. The cnditin f the Basedrain drainage channels, pipewrk and water utlet pipes F. The backup battery cnditin (vltage and capacity under lad) G. The cnditin f the large cables frm the battery t the cnverter and the battery cnnectins H. The cnditin f the Pwer Inverter, if fitted (test backup system by turning ff the mains t bth the Panel and Pwer Cnverter) I. Test the Dialer if installed J.
