3 SOLAR & WOOD HEAT STORAGE TANK GENERAL INFORMATION PLEASE READ GENERAL INFORMATION AND INSTALLATION GUIDE BEFORE INSTALLING *These tanks are designed fr indr and utdr strage (fr Outdr strage cntact STSS CO LLC). *Install tanks n a surface that can hld the weight f the water. Water weighs 8.33 punds per galln. *Avid installing in an area where the water will freeze. Each heat strage tank is shipped in a single crate. The crate cntains the fllwing items: 1. Heat strage tank. 2. Tank lid and tank bttm. Shipped inside the heat strage tank. 3. Aluminum tank lid cver. Shipped n the utside f the tank, between the tank and the stretch wrap. 4. Lid trim. Bundled and shipped in the crate at ne end f the tank. 5. Cpper lid supprts. Bundled and shipped in the crate tp. 415 galln tanks and larger have supprts. 6. The Miscellaneus Parts Bx is shipped in the crate at ne end f the tank r in a heat exchanger cil bx. It includes the fllwing parts: a. SCH-80 PVC nipple assemblies fr the cpper lid supprt and raceways. b. Aluminum lid brackets and cated nails fr lid supprt. c. Screws fr lid cver and lid trim. d. Tubes f RTV silicne. e. Installatin Guide. A Serial Number is assigned t each water tank and appears n a label n the tank. OWNER INFORMATION 1. Check yur water befre filling the strage tank. Have the water checked fr PH. Check PH (acid cntent) nce a year. Bring PH t Refer t Page 12 f this Manual fr mre infrmatin. Use rdinary baking sda fr PH balance t prtect the heat exchangers in the tank. Use pl test strips t test PH, and chlrine levels. 2. Check water level f heat strage tank nce a year. a. Remve white PVC cap and measure depth with a dwel r small stick. b. Water level shuld be within the blue tape surrunding the tank. c. If system is a drainback, plumb flw meter at water level t serve as sight gauge fr tank water level. 3. Mnitr tank water temperature regularly during the heating seasn. Temperatures abve 180 Degrees Fahrenheit will cause damage t the tank liner. 4. Call fr service r make apprpriate adjustments when a prblem is fund. 5. DO NOT use the tp f the tank fr strage. 6. A smke detectr may be installed in the area f the tank t detect accidental smke r steam as a result f equipment malfunctin. (ptinal) 7. When tank installatin is cmpleted yur strage tank shuld be sealed frm any utside cntaminates and debris. DAMAGE CAUSED BY IMPROPER INSTALLATION OR PROCEDURES Failure, by the installer, t fllw specific instructins set frth in the Installer's Manual, resulting in prperty and/r equipment damage, may vid the Warranty. 4 HANDLING THE STORAGE TANK The strage tank can be carried int place in the crate. The use f 4 wheel dllies is recmmended. The flexible cnstructin f the tank will allw it t be mved arund crners. If the tank must be mved thrugh narrw hallways r dwn right angle stairways r int difficult lcatins: a. Remve the wden crate. b. Remve the tank lid and tank bttm which are shipped inside the tank. If the crated tank is t large r rigid t get int the strage lcatin, tape cardbard trays t the bttm f the tank using duct tape r filament tape r sme ther strng tape, surrunding the tank 12" n center. This will prevent the liner frm being accidentally damaged by the metal tank skin r ther sharp bjects. Nte: The STSS warranty des nt cver any n-site installatin accident r ccurrence, including but nt limited t; if the liner is damaged during set-up, if the aluminum uter skin f the tank is drpped nt the liner, if the liner is ripped while frcing the tank thrugh a tight pening n delivery r ripped when psitining the heat exchange cils n the tank bttm withut prperly lifting the cils in place. REMOVING THE TANK CRATE 1. Remve the stretch wrap. 2. Pry lse the vertical crate supprts. 3. Remve the aluminum lid cver which is shipped inside the stretch wrap. 4. Remve the cpper lid supprts which are shipped in the crate tp. A single cpper bar supprt fr 415 and 512 tanks. A crss supprt with center pst fr 620 gallns and abve. SOLMAN3.P65 3

5 REMOVING CRATE TOP 1. Crate lid can be lifted ff in ne piece and des nt need t be disassembled. If yu plan t empty and mve the tank frm its riginal lcatin later n, save the crate and the vertical supprts. The tank can be emptied, re-crated and mved t a new lcatin. REMOVING THE TANK TOP AND BOTTOM AND LID TRIM 1. The tank tp and bttm are shipped inside the tank liner and can be easily remved. 2. The lid trim is bundled and is shipped in the crate at the end f the tank alng with the parts t install it. SOLMAN4.P65 4

6 REMOVING CRATE BOTTOM 1. Keep the bubble wrap n the tank. 2. Lay the tank n its side t remve the crate bttm. The bttm can be in ne piece and des nt need t be disassembled. If yu plan t empty and mve the tank frm its riginal lcatin, save the crate and the vertical supprts. PREPARE LINER BEFORE MOVING TANK INTO PLACE 1. While the tank is laying n its side, push the liner int the tank s that it will nt be damaged while yu are mving the tank int place. 2. At this pint, if yu are planning t mve the tank dwn stairs r any great distance, tape cardbard trays t the bttm f the tank using duct tape, filament tape r sme ther strng tape. SOLMAN5 5

7 MOVING TANK INTO PLACE 1. Check the flr t make sure it is level and flat. If the flr is nt flat, the tank will nt be perfectly rund at the tp, and it will be difficult t install the lid; therefre, shims must be placed under the aluminum tank skin at the lw spts. Measure the tp diameter while yu shim until it is perfectly rund. The shims may be remved after water is in the tank and the lid is in place. 2. Mve the tank t its final lcatin. Be careful nt t drag the liner r t drp the aluminum uter skin n the sft liner. OPENING AND SHAPING THE TANK 1. Open and shape the tank int a circle. T make sure the tank is perfectly rund, measure the diameter frm 2 r 3 lcatins acrss the tp. This is in preparatin fr installatin f the cpper crss braces. SOLMAN6.P65 6

8 TANK BOTTOM This picture shws the tank bttm. Please nte that the blue Styrfam side f the bttm shuld be laid n the flr. PLACING BOTTOM BENEATH THE TANK 1. Lift the tank at ne end and slide the bttm beneath the tank. Re-arrange the tank liner s that it des nt get caught between the tank wall and the bttm. SOLMAN7.P65 7

9 FITTING THE TANK OVER THE BOTTOM 1. T fit the tank ver the bttm, wrk the tank sidewall insulatin ver the tank bttm yu have just placed beneath the tank. It may be necessary t get int the tank t push the sides ut s that they fit ver the bttm. ADJUSTING LINER PLEATS AND BOTTOM 1. Get int the tank. (Check shes fr sharp bjects.) It is recmmended t place a twel r blanket inside the tank t prevent damage t the liner by debris brught in by shes. 2. Adjust the liner s that the liner pleats fall evenly t the base. 3. Relieve any stress at the bttm. 4. Clean ut any debris that may be at the bttm f the tank. Use a damp clth. 5. Use the palm f yur hand t feel the bttm fr any freign bjects that may have ldged in the insulatin beneath the liner and remve any sharp bjects. Nte: There are n drain prts in a slar tank. Yu may rder drain prt(s). SOLMAN8.P65 8

10 INSTALLING THE TANK HEAT EXCHANGER(S) STSS uses single wall heat exchangers. The STSS Strage System meets requirements listed under the Unifrm Plumbing Cde, Sectin and Appendix L, fr single wall heat exchangers used in indirect fired and slar water heating system. If yur system has a supply side heat exchanger (slar/wd fired/biler)and lad side heat exchanger(dmestic water), the supply shall use a nn-txic heat transfer fluid, i.e. water r nn-txic prpylene glycl. The supply side heat exchanger piping lp must be clearly labeled "nn-txic heat transfer fluid". The tank shuld be filled with ptable water nly, with the ph adjusted t and free chlrine between 1ppm - 4ppm." If yur system has nly a lad side heat exchanger, it shuld be lcated n the tp prtin f the tank fr the best heat transfer. Stands can be purchased frm STSS fr this applicatin. Refer t: Drawings and picture f cils n page Inspect the cils fr shipping dents, and repair if necessary. 2. Lift the cil/s int the tank and make certain that the fundatin blcks are prperly placed. 3. When using tw r three cils fr space heating, the cils must be plumbed tgether in parallel, nt in series. The tps f the heating cils are t be cnnected t the ht water supply line frm the biler. The pipes that cme frm the bttm f the cils, which are als t be cnnected tgether in parallel, are t be cnnected t the main return line t the biler. Place the cils s that they can be piped t the utside thrugh the bulkhead raceways. The dmestic ht water cil is t have cld water supplied t the bttm f the cil. Ht water cmes frm the tp f the cil t feed the existing water heating system. If maximum tank temperature is set abve 140 degrees it is recmmended that a tempering valve r anti-scald valve be installed n the existing ht water system. NOTE: The gray plastic nipples are nt t be used as a cupling. They are a race-way fr the heat exchanger pipes t pass thrugh. Silicne seals the space between the raceway and the heat exchanger piping. 4. When 2 r mre cils are supplied with the system, psitin a pair f them s that they can be cnnected t each ther, cil bttm t cil bttm and cil tp t cil tp as shwn n page 10 in the installers manual. 3/4 inch tees r the 3/4" x 3/4" x 1" bullhead tees can be used. Bullhead tees reduce head pressure and increase flw rates. In any applicatin ver 50,000 BTUs heat lss, bull head tees are required. Large cmmercial jbs will have cil placement and pipe header diagrams. NOTE: Pipe the utput f the Wd Biler (Tp biler prt) t the tp f the tank cil(s) and pipe the bttm f the tank cil(s) t the input prt n the Wd Biler. (Bttm biler prt). Fllw the piping diagram supplied with yur heating system. Heat input travels tp-dwn in the HEXs, utput travels bttm up in the HEX cils. NOTE: Dripping slder may damage the tank EPDM. This tank was rdered with either 1" raceways fr 3/4" pipe, 1-1/4" raceways fr 1" pipe r 1-1/2" raceways fr 1-1/4" pipe r cmbinatins. 5. USE THE RTV SILICONE SENT WITH THE TANK TO COMPLETELY COVER THE NUT. Silicne will frm a "rubber bt" between the EPDM and the cpper t assure a vapr-prf seal between the raceway and the pipes a) Clean the heat exchanger piping next t the nipple because silicne will nt bnd t dirty metal. b) If vapr gets past this seal, cndensatin will build up in the insulatin and reduce insulatin value until it dries ut again. c) This prcedure shuld be applied t the lid penetratins and fill/inspectin prt als. 6. Pressure check yur heat exchangers befre putting water in the tank. 9

12 INSTALLING THE COPPER LID SUPPORTS A single cpper bar r a crss "T" lid supprt and a center pst are cut t the prper length fr the tank size and are shipped unassembled in the crate tp. 415 galln tanks and 512 galln tanks have a single cpper bar. 1. Insert tw f the fur cpper lid supprts int the crss "T" f the center pst. 2. Place the pst in the center f the tank and insert the ends f the cpper int the raceways n the side f the tank. 3. Place the ther tw lengths f cpper int the center pst and int the raceways. 4. Make sure the tank is rund. Measure acrss each leg f the "T" and s that bth measurements are the same. 5. Clean the piping next t the nipple with emery tape. The silicne sealant will nt bnd t dirty metal. 6. Apply the silicne t the EPDM, the nipple and 1/2 inch f the piping. This silicne will harden int a "bt" t frm a barrier against misture cndensing int the wall insulatin abve the water line. 7. Aluminum lid supprt brackets and cated nails are supplied in the miscellaneus parts bx and are part f the lid supprt system. 11 SOLMAN11.P65

13 FILL THE HEAT STORAGE TANK WITH WATER 1. Pressure check piping fr slw leaks befre filling the strage tank with water. 2. Fill the tank with water befre putting the lid in place. 3. The water level in the tank shuld nt be higher than the bttm f the blue tape n the utside f the tank and must be belw the raceways fr the lid supprt. The blue tape near the tp f the tank is the water level "full" mark. Fill the tank t the bttm f the blue tape when the water is cld. DO NOT OVERFILL! Nte: After the lid is in place, water can be added t tank thrugh the fill and inspectin prt in the lid using a hse. TO CHECK THE WATER LEVEL IN THE TANK If system is plumbed as a drainback with a flw meter, use flw meter as sight gauge fr tank water level; therwise t check water level unscrew the white cap n the inspectin prt and insert a dwel r thin stick int the tank. *WARNING* NO PETROLEUM BASED PRODUCTS SUCH AS BOILER TREATMENT, OIL, GREASE, DIESEL FUEL OR GASOLINE SHOULD BE PUT INTO THIS EPDM-LINED TANK NOR SHOULD THESE PRODUCTS BE ALLOWED TO COME IN CONTACT WITH THE EPDM LINER FROM OUTSIDE THE TANK. Check yur water befre filling the strage tank. The PH Level f the water in the tank is critical. PH shuld be brught up t 7.8 t 8.6. Specifically if cpper heat exchangers are used the PH level shuld be kept between 8.2 t 8.6. T prtect metals in the tank and lines, have a water specialist treat the water cming int yur hme fr acid. Water cntaining electrlytes, salt r disslved electrical cnductrs may set up a cnditin called electrlysis (the disslutin f metals by electrical current). As a precautin add NATURAL baking sda t the water. Use pl test strips t verify crrect ph and chlrine levels. PH shuld be 7.8 t 8.6 and chlrine shuld be 1ppm t 4ppm. Lcal water cnditins are usually knwn by well drillers. Acid wells, spring water, surface water, mine water, r acid lake water present serius cnditins yu shuld be aware f. Yu may wish t truck in water frm a "City Water" system if these cnditins are cmmn in yur area. UNAUTHORIZED ADDITIVES MAY VOID THE WARRANTY. 12 TARMAN12.P65

14 PUTTING THE LID ON THE TANK Refer t the Tank Explded View. Page Aluminum lid brackets and cated nails are shipped in the miscellaneus parts bx. Fasten the brackets with the nails every 24 inches n center n the tp rim f the tank between the cpper crss "T" penetratins. The nails will penetrate the liner and the insulatin n the tp rim. N brackets are needed next t the cpper lid supprts. 2. Place the lid n tp f the tank with the liner facing the water. 3. Make sure the liner cmes up arund the lid. 4. Press the lid dwn evenly all arund the tank. 5. Apply silicne arund the lid where the EPDM lid liner and the tp f the wall meet. 6. Press the lid all the way dwn t rest n the brackets and lid supprt. 7. Carefully apply silicne all the way arund the lid s that cndensatin cannt frm under the lid cver. PLACE ALUMINUM LID COVER AND LID TRIM 1. Line up the vent hle with the hle in the aluminum cver. 2. Center the aluminum and line up the 2 pieces f the lid in preparatin t use the sheetmetal screws t fasten the pieces tgether. 3. Place the metal lid trim arund the tp t cver the utside f the lid and the utside f the tank. 4. Fasten the sheetmetal screws supplied thrugh the lid cver. SCREW PVC CAP ON INSPECTION/VENT PORT Wrap the threads f the PVC nipple with Tefln tape. This will prevent cndensatin frm dripping nt the lid insulatin. D nt ver-tighten the white cap when yu replace it. NOTE: THE LID IS NOT DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND HEAVY WEIGHT. DO NOT STORE ANYTHING ON TOP OF THE TANK. OWNER MAINTENANCE CHECK LIST 1. Check the water level f the strage tank nce a year. Remve the white cap frm the inspectin prt in the lid. Use a dwel r paint stirring stick. Water level shuld be within the blue tape arund the tank. When adding water never fill abve the middle f the blue tape when ht. 2. Check the huse breaker serving the cntrls f the tank 3. Prper cntrls and instructins must be fllwed when electric is used fr backup. 4. When hme heating is part f the system, check the circulatrs at the beginning f the seasn. 5. Check the air filter and replace r clean n a warm air delivery system as needed. 13 slman13.p65

15 INSTALLING TANK THERMOMETERS, AQUASTAT AND TURBULATORS THERMOMETERS BiHEAT USA heat strage tanks cme with three prts fr installing the Taylr r Gldline thermmeter temperature sensrs. The three sensr prts are lcated n the side f the tank near the bttm, middle and tp. T install the sensrs, lsen the screws attaching the electrical cver plate. Remve the cver plate and the tw inches f insulatin. Once the EPDM rubber liner is visible, insert the sensr prbe in between the rund insulatin plug and the EPDM. (D nt puncture the liner). Place it right behind the plug s yu can replace it if it fails. AQUASTAT Munting the EXCELHSRP (L8151 Aquastat) n the heat strage tank when using an EXCEL MULTIFUEL BOILER. Find the lcatin f the 3 1/2 square electrical bx cver plate n the utside f the heat strage tank apprximately 15 ff the flr. Remve the cver plate and the insulatin plug behind the plate. Carefully insert the sensr bulb f the aquastat between the inner surface f the insulatin plug and the EPDM liner. If there are any sharp edges r prjectins n the sensr bulb, they must be padded r cvered s that they d nt damage the liner. The L8151 aquastat is then munted up high n the side f the tank with sheet metal screws. Run a 3-cnductr thermstat wire frm the B1, ZR, L1 terminals f the aquastat t the external 24 vlt terminal strip as shwn in yur Excel biler s field wiring diagram. TURBULATORS The 3 turbulatrs (item #092244) are used t increase the heat exchange efficiency f wd gasificatin bilers cnnected t heat strage systems. T install the turbulatrs, remve the access cver abve the heat exchange tubes. After brushing the tubes, place a turbulatr in each wd heat exchange tube. NOTE: TARM recmmends that the turbulatrs NOT be installed when a biler is first installed. Operate the biler WITHOUT the turbulatrs installed fr a mnth r tw until yu can easily get the fire started and perating with flue temperatures f 600 degrees F. r mre. Als nte that cnstant flue temperatures f less than 300 degrees F. are t lw when the turbulatrs are installed TARMAN14.P65 14

16 STSS CO INC LIMITED WARRANTY FOR SOLAR/WOOD APPLICATIONS STSS CO INC warrants that the prducts manufactured fr use with SOLAR/WOOD systems by STSS CO INC will be free frm defects in material and wrkmanship fr a perid f ten (10) years frm the date f shipment by STSS CO INC within the limitatins and terms f the STSS CO INC equipment warranty statements. STSS CO INC warrants the strage tank liner and lid liner t be free f defects in material and wrkmanship at the time f manufacture when subject t nrmal use. Nrmal use is defined as strage f water at temperatures nt t exceed 175 Degrees Fahrenheit fr the perid f the warranty. If the tank liner shuld leak belw the water line within a three-year warranty perid frm temperatures nt t exceed 175 Degrees Fahrenheit, STSS CO INC will supply repair r replacement material at n cst during the five-year warranty perid. Liner failure is usually the result f physical puncture r high limit failure which will result in tank temperatures exceeding the 175 Degree limit. An annual maintenance service call by a qualified heating prfessinal is required t maintain this warranty in effect. The warranty services herein described are cntingent upn the prper use f the prducts and d nt cver prducts which have been mdified r which have been subject t physical, electrical r electr-mechanical stress exceeding the vltages and temperatures specified fr use with these prducts, r n which the riginal identificatin marks such as serial number, warning labels, etc. have been altered r remved. "Prper use f the prducts" includes the crrect applicatin f the silicne sealant arund the tank lid. Imprper applicatin f the silicne sealant will result in cndensatin under the lid cver and cnsequential damage t the insulatin in the lid which will nt be cvered by this warranty. Failure analysis by STSS CO INC shall be final and binding. If the prduct fails t perfrm accrding t the abve warranties and the Purchaser ntifies STSS CO INC thrugh its DISTRIBUTOR, f such failure r ther defect, STSS CO INC shall, at its ptin, repair r replace the defective part r parts, and, when required by STSS CO INC, the Purchaser shall return the defective part t STSS CO INC fr inspectin and repair r replacement. If the defective part is nt returned t STSS CO INC. within 30 (thirty) days frm the date the replacement part was shipped t DISTRIBUTOR, the price f the part will be due and payable t STSS CO INC. All warranty requests must be in writing and must include the tank Serial Number. STSS CO INC will nt accept the return f any prduct unless it receives timely ntice f the defect. STSS CO INC will supply DISTRIBUTOR with written apprval and instructins fr the return. Transprtatin charges will be paid by the sender fr the return f parts t STSS CO INC fr warranty analysis. Requests fr special handling, i.e. Next Day Air, 24 Hur Return, etc. may be negtiated at extra cst. All parts, bth warranty and replacement, will be shipped n a cash-in-advance basis. Refund will be issued by STSS CO INC based n the warranty determinatin. All replaced parts will becme the prperty f STSS CO INC. The fllwing Listed Parts are cnsidered by STSS CO INC t be Cnsumables and have a ne year warranty r the limited warranty ffered by their manufacturer: 1. Electric Elements (1 Year) Vlt Cil, Cntact Relays (1 Year) 3. Electrnic Parts r High Limit Cntrls including Indr/Outdr Reset (1 Year) Distributr/Dealers' remedies specified in this warranty statement are Distributr/Dealers' sle and exclusive remedies. STSS CO INC shall nt be liable t any Distributr/Dealer r any ther persn fr damages f any nature whatsever in the event f any breach f the warranty cntained in this statement. The freging warranty is exclusive and in lieu f all ther warranties, expressed r implied, including implied warranties fr merchantability and fitness fr a particular purpse. The remedies f Distributr/Dealer set frth herein are exclusive. The maximum liability f STSS CO INC fr any ther claim f any kind r nature, including but nt limited t negligence arising ut f r in any way related t any sale, use r ther emplyment f any prduct delivered t dealer by STSS CO INC, whether such liability arises frm any claim based upn cntract, warranty, trt r therwise which may be asserted by Distributr/Dealer, r any successr in interest t the Distributr/Dealer, f any ther persn r entity, and remedy fr same, shall be limited t return f the cnsideratin actually paid fr any relevant prduct, less the reasnable value f any use made theref by Dealer. Failure t install a tank temperature limiting device culd vid the warranty. SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. The length varies with capacity. Yu can walk it int yur hme, pen the crate and have it ready t fill with water in less than an hur. Water can be circulated in a clsed lp thrugh the tank heat exchanger, r tank water can be circulated pen lp. Use bth methds in the same tank if required. Distributin can be designed with hydrnic basebard, radiant flrs, radiatrs, r warm-air duct heat exchangers in a furnace r heat pump system where central air cnditining is installed. Cmbining warm-air and basebard, fr example, is anther advantage with this system. Multiple znes, bth pen and clsed lps can be perated frm the same wd burning biler and tank system at the same time. Cnventinal 24 vlt, lw vltage cntrls, reliable and safe hardwired designs are available fr switch-ver t back up fuels t keep yu warm and yur hme at a set temperature when yu are away. The HEAT EXCHANGE COILS are piped singly r in pairs fr space heating and heating dmestic ht water. Cils purge air autmatically, critical during the initial system start-up. Heat stratificatin in the tank assures that the httest water is delivered. Cils are designed t permit a unique piping arrangement. It allws ne set f cils t heat the tank (biler t tank) and heat the huse (tank t huse), r it allws the biler t bypass the tank and directly heat the huse.
