USER INSTRUCTIONS 1. INTRODUCTION Befre use f this appliance please read these instructins fully. WARNING: ANY MODIFICATION OF THE APPLIANCE THAT HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED IN WRITING BY THE TESTING AUTHORITY IS CONSIDERED AS BREACHING AS/NZS WARNING: DO NOT USE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS OR AEROSOLS TO START OR REKINDLE THE FIRE. WARNING: DO NOT USE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS OR AEROSOLS IN THE VICINITY OF THIS APPLIANCE WHEN IT IS OPERATING. WARNING: DO NOT STORE FUEL WITHIN HEATER INSTALLATION CLEARANCES. WARNING: WHEN OPERATING THIS APPLIANCE AS AN OPEN FIRE USE A FIRE SCREEN. WARNING: OPEN AIR CONTROL (AND DAMPER WHEN FITTED) BEFORE OPENING FIRING DOOR. CAUTION: THIS APPLIANCE SHOULD NOT BE OPERATED WITH A CRACKED GLASS. CAUTION: THIS APPLIANCE SHOULD BE MAINTAINED AND OPERATED AT ALL TIMES IN ACCORDANCE WITH THESE INSTRUCTIONS. CAUTION: THE USE OF SOME TYPES OF PRESERVATIVE- TREATED WOOD AS A FUEL CAN BE HAZARDOUS. The appliance r flue system shuld nt be mdified in any way withut the written apprval f the manufacturer. Extractr fans r cker hds must nt be placed in the same rm r space as this can cause appliance t emit smke int the rm. AIR CONTROLS Cleanburn technlgy and greater efficiency The Blaze Free-standing FS range and Insert IS range feature a single air cntrl system. It is designed t intrduce xygen t int the base f the fire thereby cntrlling the rate f cmbustin f the wd as well as xygen being drawn int the upper firebx where cmbustin f the gases ccurs. The air cntrl is perated by sliding the spring handle lcated n the tp left side f the heater. Pulled all the way ut ffers maximum burn rate, while pushed all the way in ffers minimum burn rate. Secndary air hles in the rear f the firebx prvide additinal xygen fr mre cmplete cmbustin f the gases released frm the burning wd. DOOR HANDLE Warning: dr handle may get ht if appliance has been left in High burn setting fr an extended perid f time. In which case use a prtective glve r equivalent t pen. Open air slide befre pening the dr t eliminate the chance f backdraft and/r smke entering the rm. FAN The can be used t spread the heat arund the rm mre quickly and int ther rms. It des nt have t be n if nt required. 2. USING APPLIANCE FOR FIRST TIME First few times the appliance is lit, it will give ff sme drus fumes. This is caused by the paint curing. D nt tuch the paint wrk while it is curing therwise it can leave a permanent mark n the appliance. Once the paint has cured it will nt re-ccur. Keep the rm well ventilated until these fumes have cleared.
3. RECOMMENDED FUELS 5. RUNNING THE APPLIANCE Burn nly seasned hardwd timber with a misture cntent f less than 20%. Newly cut wd shuld be allwed t dry/seasn fr 12 t 18 mnths befre use. Wd shuld be stred in an envirnment prtected frm the weather t minimise any ptential misture cntent. Fr best results, wd shuld nt exceed 270mm in length and 150mm diameter. Any larger and appliance will nt perate at its ptimum. It is better t burn several smaller pieces f wd than ne large single piece. Pr quality timber: - Causes lw cmbustin efficiency - Prduces pr emissins (smkey) - Results in additinal build up f creste (st) in the flue which will then require regular cleaning and may result in a flue fire. D nt burn painted, impregnated/treated wd, manufactured bard prducts r pallet wd. 4. LIGHTING THE FIRE Maximum Heat Output: After establishing the fire and lading it with larger pieces f wd, leave it running with the air slide fully pen (pulled all the way ut). This setting will generate maximum heat utput. Running the appliance with the dr pen will nt prduce maximum heating in the rm as it will draw a lt f already warmed air ut f the rm. D nt verlad firebx with fuel. Nte that this setting is nt the mst energy efficient as sme heat is lst up the flue instead f being transferred int the rm. Hwever, nce fire has established, particulate emissins will be very lw, i.e. n smke, which is gd. T further maximise heat utput turn the fan n t the High speed setting t spread the heat arund the rm. Lw Heat Output: The heat utput n the appliance can be reduced by clsing the air slide which will restrict the xygen supplied t the fire and slw dwn the rate at which the wd burns. Place firelighters r paper and dry kindling wd in the base f the firebx. Light the paper r firelighters. Open the air cntrl lcated n the tp left crner f the appliance by pulling ut frm the appliance. This setting will prvide the best energy efficiency as the wd burns fr lnger. Hwever, if nt perated crrectly may result in higher particulate emissins. Prir t clsing the air slide ensure that the fire is burning briskly. This may require pening the air slide fully fr 5-10mins befre shutting dwn. If necessary, leave the dr slightly pen as the fire establishes and the glass warms t avid the build-up f cndensatin. Fr the ptimum between clean burning, and getting the best in efficiency, frm the fully clsed psitin, pen the air slide 4-5mm. Add larger pieces f wd. T many lgs may smther the fire. Clse the dr. The air slide can be adjusted t any psitin s desired depending n wanted heat utput versus burn time. D nt leave fire unattended while dr is nt clsed. Fan may be turned t Lw speed setting r ff if the heater is putting ut sufficient heat withut the fan n.
Relad with mre wd: Factrs affecting the flue draught include: 1. Open air slide befre pening dr. 2. Rake / break up any existing cals. 3. Lad the wd with the length rientated frnt t back. Insufficient flue height Trees r ther buildings nearby causing turbulence High and gusty winds 4. Better results will be achieved by lading several smaller pieces f wd than ne large piece. 5. Clse dr with air slide fully pen, and leave fr minimum f 10 minutes t allw the fresh wd t catch. 6. After 10 r mre minutes, the air slide can be adjusted t the desired heat utput setting. Outside temperature and weather cnditins Blcked flue Fr advice n the crrectin f persistent flue prblems cnsult yur supplier/installer fr mre detail. 7. ASH REMOVAL Fuel Quality Use wd with a misture cntent f less than 20%. Lgs shuld nt feel mist r damp, r have mss and fungal grwths. Symptms related t wet wd: Difficulty starting and keeping a fire burning well Smke and nly small flames Dirty glass and/r fire bricks Rapid creste build-up in the flue/chimney Lw heat utput Shrt burn times, and blue/grey smke frm the flue/chimney utlet Run appliance at high heat utput fr a shrt perid each day t avid large build-up f tars and creste within the appliance and flue. Flue Draught 6. BURNING TIPS Depending n the type f wd burnt and frequency, the ashes will need remving every 2 t 6 weeks. Excess ashes shuld be remved when necessary, placed in a nn-cmbustible cntainer with a tightly fitting lid and mved utdrs immediately t a lcatin clear f cmbustible materials. If a flue/chimney fire ccurs: 8. FLUE/CHIMNEY FIRE Shut air slide cntrl fully t smther the fire D nt use the appliance after a flue fire until an accredited installer has assessed the cause and any resultant damage. 9. CLEANING PAINT WORK & GLASS The appliance, when cl, can be cleaned with a damp clth. The flue has tw main functins:- 1. T safely remve smke, gases and fumes frm the appliance. 2. T prvide a sufficient amunt f draught (suctin) in the appliance t ensure the fire keeps burning. Draught is caused by the rising ht air in the flue when the fire has been lit. The psitin, height and size f the flue can affect the perfrmance f the flue draught. Refer t installatin guide fr details n flue installatin. Over the years, the black paint will fade and can be tuched up with Stve Bright metallic black paint. T clean the glass, we recmmend using a husehld windw cleaner r general purpse cleaner with a sft clth. D nt use abrasive cleaner r scurer pads.
10. CLEANING THE FLUE 11. TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS Check inside f flue prir t each seasn fr any build up f creste (wd tar). T d this:- First remve the baffle (refer t 2. Replacement f Baffle under Maintenance & Servicing sectin). Using a small mirrr and trch hld the mirrr n an angle belw the flue with the trch shining at it and lk fr black creste build up. If nly a fine black pwdery layer then that is nrmal, but if built up layers f creste can be seen, then the flue needs cleaning. Refit the baffle if n cleaning is required. T clean the flue:- A flue cleaning brush can be purchased frm mst wd heater retail utlets r large hardware stres. 1. Glass in dr blackening This can have several pssible causes: i) Burning unseasned wd if the wd is t wet, it will cause the glass t blacken. ii) iii) Appliance perated at lw temperature after an vernight burn where the air slide cntrl has been fully clsed, the glass may have blackened. When the fire is re-stked and burning n the high heat setting, the blackened glass shuld self-clean. Prblems with the flue insufficient flue draught can cause the glass t blacken. If the flue is t shrt, nt prperly insulated, r in a psitin that results in a dwndraught, then there will be insufficient flue draught. Cntact the installer shuld this happen. The bjective is t pull the brush dwn thrugh the flue. With the baffle remved, tie a rpe t ne end f the brush, and drp the rpe frm the tp (utside n tp f the rf) dwn the flue. Grab the end f the rpe inside the firebx and pull the brush thrugh. Check the inside f the flue with the mirrr and trch. Repeat if necessary. Once clean, remve any excess creste frm the firebx and replace the baffle. 2. Truble starting the fire if all ash has been remved frm the firebx, then it can upset the supply f air t the base f the fire. It can aid the fire by retaining sme ash when cleaning ut the firebx. 3. Glass cracking D nt ver tighten the screws n the stainless steel strips that hld the dr glass in place. Otherwise, expansin f the cast irn dr may cause the glass t crack. Alternatively, get a flue cleaning service t d the jb fr yu (it s a dirty jb). Check flue integrity by checking that the 900mm flue sectins have nt separated at the jins.
MAINTENANCE and SERVICING 1. REPLACEMENT OF FIREBRICKS 2. REPLACEMENT OF BAFFLE The purpse f the firebricks in the appliance is t increase thermal mass and t guarantee the lngevity f the steel firebx. Over time the firebricks may becme cracked and crumble away. If s, then they shuld be replaced sn after. T replace the firebricks: i) Mve any ash away frm the base f the bricks. The 8mm thick steel baffle helps t retain the heat in the firebx by lengthening the path f the flame s that they d nt g straight up the flue. Over time, the baffle will begin t sag a little due t the excessive heat. This will nt affect the way the fire burns. Eventually the baffle will burn thrugh (5+ years) and if s will need t be replaced. ii) Remve the brick retainer(s) and remve the bricks. T remve the baffle: iii) Replace with new bricks, and retainers which hld the bricks in place. FS 500 LE & IS 500 LE Brick Layut i) Remve any excess ash and cals. ii) Remve the brick retainers and bricks frm the rear and sides f the firebx. iii) Lift the baffle up at the back enugh t clear the rear supprt pegs and slide frward s that the baffle can be lwered at the back. iv) Lwering the rear f the baffle will allw the frnt f the baffle t slide past the frnt supprt pegs n the sides f the firebx. v) Once the baffle has cleared the frnt supprt pegs, it can be remved frm the firebx. vi) Repeat steps i) t v) in reverse t replace with the new baffle. Nte: The FS 800 LE and IS 800 LE baffle weighs 14kg, sme strength is required t replace the baffle. FS 800 LE & IS 800 LE Brick Layut
3. REMOVING THE DOOR T remve the dr:- i) Unscrew the air cntrl slide rd. ii) Remve the dr-stp screw frm the bttm left crner. iii) Lift the dr up and ver the tp end f the vertical hinge rd. iv) Lwer the dr and slide ff the bttm end f the hinge rd. (Nte that smetimes the bttm hrizntal panel with the Blaze decal may be hindering the dr frm sliding ff the bttm end f the hinge rd. If s, then the bttm panel can be remved by lifting it up and ff frm the heater bdy, it hangs n tw lugs.) iii) Keeping the dr in that psitin relative t the hinge, pen it and tighten the screws until firm. iv) Clse the dr t 90% again and make any final adjustments up r dwn by tapping the dr n the right hand side until it appears parallel relative t the tp and bttm hrizntal panels abve and belw the dr. v) Open dr again and tighten screws fully. 5. FITTING A NEW DOOR GLASS This task may be easier with the dr remved frm the appliance and laid hrizntally n a wrk-bench. T replace the dr glass: i) Remve the three M8 size Allen key screws securing the glass retainer t the dr with the supplied Allen key. 4. ADJUSTING THE DOOR ii) iii) iv) Lift the left hand side f the glass retainer abut 5mm, then slide the retainer acrss t the left s as t free it frm the tw hinge brackets n the right hand side. Gently lift the glass retainer up and ut, taking careful nte that the glass may still be intact in the retainer and ptentially culd fall ut. Flip the retainer ver, remve the ld glass panel. Over time the screws securing the dr hinge plate t the heater may lsen resulting in the dr drpping, i.e. visually appears n slight angle and n lnger 100% hrizntal. This can result in a pr dr seal and unnecessary amunts f xygen entering the firebx and wd burning t quickly. T fix this and repsitin the dr:- i) With the supplied Allen key, lsen the tw screws n the hinge plate. ii) With the dr 90% clsed, slwly lift the bttm right crner f the dr until the dr appears hrizntal. v) The new dr glass panel shuld have been supplied with a length f adhesive glass seal. Peel back the backing n the tape, and run it alng the edges f the glass panel, flding it equally ver each side s as t create a padded brder arund the edge f the glass. vi) Fit the new glass int the glass retainer, and fit the retainer back int the dr ensuring that the retainer is secured beneath the tw brackets n the right side befre fastening the three screws.
b. Remve the T-shaped latch and remve ne washer. c. Replace the latch and then place the remve washer ver the rd. d. Refit the nut. D nt ver tighten therwise dr handle will nt turn easily. If dr seal is still nt tight enugh remve anther washer r replace dr seal. vii) Dispse f the ld glass in a respnsible manner. 6. FITTING A NEW DOOR SEAL 8. REPLACEMENT SPARE PARTS LIST This task may be easier with the dr remved frm the appliance and laid hrizntally n a wrk-bench. i) Remve any ld seal frm the dr. ii) iii) iv) Clean ut the grve in the dr that the seal was bedded in using a flat-end screw driver r equivalent. Run a thin bead f clear rf and gutter silicne alng the grve. Starting at ne end, press the new dr seal int the grve n the dr. v) Refit the dr if it has been remved and clse. 7. DOOR HANDLE ADJUSTMENT Over time, the dr seal can becme cmpressed resulting in a less than adequate seal between the dr and the frnt edge f the firebx. Fr example, if the wd burns unusually fast even with the air slide shut, it may mean that there is an air leak arund the dr. In this situatin, the dr seal des nt necessarily need replacing rather adjustment f the dr handle can tighten the seal. There are tw ways t tighten the dr:- i) Adjust dr latch rd the rd n the right side f the firebx upn which the dr handle latches nt can be gently tapped with a hammer. The rd nly needs t be mved 1mm r less, which is a very gently tap. T much and the rd will need t be levered ut again. Clse the dr t test if any imprvement in the dr clsing firmly. 1.
