6 CMMT : CMMT : Under-Flame Fire Tests n Timber Decks 6 1. Intrductin This reprt frms part f the wrk undertaken fr the Bushfire CRC t reduce the risk f building lss and injuries t ccupants due t bushfires. It investigates the perfrmance f sme typical Australian timber decking tested t the: American Urban Wildland Interface Building Test Standard 12-7A-5, Fire Resistive Standards fr Decks and Other hrizntal Ancillary Structures, Part A Under-flame test. The aim was t: Determine if typical Australian dmestic timber decking wuld pass the requirements in the American Standard. Obtain a greater understanding f hw decks behave in fires. Obtain sme data n the perfrmance f the decks that culd assist with future tests t be perfrmed based n the prpsed Draft AS Bushfire Test Methd. A ttal f 13 decks were tested cvering a range f timber species and bard gemetries. Sme variatins t the standard were used t determine the effect n the decking perfrmance f changing the type f jist, gap between the bards and the material cnditining.
7 CMMT : CMMT : Under-Flame Fire Tests n Timber Decks 7 2. Test Prcedure 2.0 General The tests were cnducted using the American standard 12-7A-5 Part A Under-flame test [1]. The standard required the cnstructin f a simple frame n which t supprt the deck test specimen (see Figure 2-1), abve a 300 x 300mm sandbx burner prducing a 80 kw fire. The frame is placed under an exhaust hd with instrumentatin fr measuring heat release. Bth the sandbx burner and exhaust hd were available as part f the rm fire test facilities (cnducted t ISO 9705 [3]) at the Fire Science and Technlgy Labratries at Highett in Melburne. The size and psitin f the fire beneath the deck simulates the effect f abut 1 kg f paper trash burning. The height f the deck is set s the tp f the flames flw up thrugh the gaps in the decking. The deck is nly expsed t the fire fr 3 minutes but bserved fr up t 40 minutes afterwards. Figure 2-1 Frame fr Supprting Deck (a piece f cement sheet is sitting n the steel channels where the deck is t be placed)
8 CMMT : CMMT : Under-Flame Fire Tests n Timber Decks Summary f the Test Requirements The fllwing infrmatin summarises the test requirements used during the tests. Sme minr changes were made t the standard requirements t take int accunt available jist material and cnditining facilities. Test Specimen (see Figure 2-2): Timber deck 700mm (jist directin) x 600mm (decking bard length) 2 x Radiata pine 150mm x 45mm jists spaced 405mm apart (360mm gap between jists) Decking bards cnnected t each jist by a single 65mm lng screw with 5mm gap between bards. At the frnt end, the jist and the decking bards are flush while at the wall end the last decking bard verlaps the edge f the jist by 25mm. Test frame (see Figure 2-3): Framing fr hlding the deck 690mm abve a 300mm x 300mm sand bx burner measured t the underside f the decking bards. Open frnt and lined sides and back with 200mm gap at the base t allw fr air flw t the burner. The height f the sides are apprximately the same level as the tp f the deck. The height f the back is 2400mm. In plan the frame is U shaped with dimensins apprximately 700mm x 700mm. Steel channels supprt the jists alng the bttm edge leaving nly the inside face f the jist and the underside f the decking bards between the jists expsed t the flames. A nn cmbustible plinth bard the same depth as the jist and fastened t the back wall prvides a supprt n which the 25mm verlap n the last decking bard can rest.
9 CMMT : CMMT : Under-Flame Fire Tests n Timber Decks 9 Test Prcedure: Test specimens are cnditined at 45 C and 18% Relative Humidity (RH) fr at least 1 week prir t testing (~5% EMC). The American standard requires 6% EMC. Fr the first 3 minutes f the test the specimens are expsed t a 80 kw sandbx burner fire. The burner is then turned ff and the specimen bserved fr up t 40 minutes. T pass, 3 replicates f the specimen must all have an absence f: sustained flaming r glwing cmbustin at the end f the 40minute perid structural failure f any deck bard and peak heat release < 270 kw/m 2 (i.e. 115 kw based n a 700mm x 610mm deck area). 11 CMMT : CMMT : Under-Flame Fire Tests n Timber Decks Test Results 3.0 Specimens Tested Only a limited range f decks culd be tested due the time restraints n using the labratry. In ttal 13 decks f different cnfiguratins were cnstructed as shwn in Table 3-1. The samples with significant variatins frm the standard requirements (marked in bld in the table) were: 5, 8 and 10 Gap f 10mm 11, 12 and 13 Steel jists 12 and 13 Cnditined at 23º C and 50% RH The species were selected as representative f the types f timbers used fr decking in Australia. Radiata Pine instead f CCA Treated Radiata Pine was used fr health and safety reasns. Initially decks numbered 1 t 10 were cnstructed and then tested n the same day t reduce any variability due t labratry cnditins. Fllwing these tests a secnd series f 3 decks (Ns 11 t 13) were cnstructed and tested. In the later decks variatins were made t try and imprve the decks perfrmance. These include: Replacement f the timber jists with steel C sectins Change f cnditining envirnment t 23º C and 50% RH and The use f tapered instead f square edges n the decking bards

13 CMMT : CMMT : Under-Flame Fire Tests n Timber Decks First Series f Tests (Ns 1 t 10) The initial tests were cnducted at the specified burner utput f 80 kw. Hwever at this level it became bvius that all f the decks wuld fail bth the heat release and structural criteria (see Figure 3-1). As a result, fur f the initial 10 decks (Ns 3,5,6 and 8, see Table 3-2) were tested at either 60 kw r 70 kw t determine at what level they might pass. Hwever all fur decks failed the heat release criteria having peak heat releases greater than 115 kw (i.e. 270 kw/m 2 and assuming a 700mm x 610mm deck area) while the tw decks tested at 70 kw failed the structural requirement as well. The peak heat release values frm the tests are given in Table 3-2. Phts f the 4 test specimens tested at the reduced burner utput are shwn in Figure 3-2 and Figure 3-3. The test recrd sheets cntaining plts f the heat release are given in Appendix B. Sme bservatins nted were: The Radiata Pine deck perfrmed the wrst having the highest peak heat release and pst burner heat release f 250 kw and 60 kw respectively. Als, althugh the deck was nly allwed t burn fr 6 minutes pst burner, it was bvius that it wuld have cmpletely burnt ut if it had been allwed t cntinue t burn. The White Cypress Pine deck which had 30mm thick bards cmpared with the 20mm used fr the majrity f decks, shwed that thicker bards perfrmed better in terms f the structural criteria. The plinth detail has a majr effect n the cmbustin f the decking bard next t the wall. In all tests the gap between the plinth and the decking bard acted as a chimney fr the flames t ignite the bard then as a heat trap t incubate the fire. This resulted in a high heat lad n the wall adjacent t the deck as shwn in Figure 3-4. The heat frm the burning pine jists increase the cmbustin n the adjacent decking (see Figure 3-5).

18 CMMT : CMMT : Under-Flame Fire Tests n Timber Decks Secnd Series f Tests (Ns 11 t 13) The secnd series f tests lked at imprving the perfrmance f the decks by replacing the bard next t the wall with a steel sectin, using steel jists, a 23º C and 50% RH cnditin envirnment and, in ne case, a 30 tapered edged bard. The later change riginating frm the burn pattern evident in the first series f tests where the edge f the bards burn in a tapered pattern as shwn in Figure 3-6. A cmparisn f the tapered bard used and a previusly burnt square edged bard is shwn in Figure 3-7. Figure 3-6 Tapered burn pattern n edge f decking bards Figure 3-7 Cmparisn f tapered edge and burnt square edged bard
19 CMMT : CMMT : Under-Flame Fire Tests n Timber Decks 19 The reasns fr selecting these changes were: T prevent the detail arund the plinth causing a high heat lad n the wall by replacing the last bard with a steel sectin (see Figure 3-8). During the first series f tests the pine jists were bserved t add significantly t the heat lading n the decking bards. The easing f the cnditining requirements frm 45 C and 18% RH t 23º C and 50% RH is in line with the recmmendatins in the Draft AS Bushfire Test Methd. Using a tapered edge bard may reduce the heat cncentratin in the gap between the bards. The peak heat release results f the tests are given in Table 3-3. After test phts f the decks are shwn in Figure 3-8. While the results indicate a large imprvement in the perfrmance, a clse analysis indicates that the test cnditins were different between the first and secnd series f tests. An analysis f the data including vide recrds indicates that the strength f the pilt flame was different between the tw series f tests. The secnd series f tests was cnducted with a strnger pilt flame resulting in sme f the main burner flame being blwn ut the frnt f the deck and reducing its impact. Hence the results are nt reliable. Due t limited access t the lab the tests culd nt be repeated. Hwever it is prpsed t cver these cmparative tests in future wrk based n the AS test prcedure invlving the use f a radiant panel test rig.
