1 2011 Wrk Plan Status Reprt 1) Land Management Cntrl and mnitr invasive species, with imprtance given t new invaders such as prcelain berry and Japanese hedge parsley, first dcumented in the Preserve in Status: Vlunteers have cntinued t cntribute hundreds f hurs t nging cntrl f invasive plants. Cntrl f the prcelain berry epidemic scale ppulatin is, and will be, nging. A few scattered ccurrences f hedge parsley were remved frm Frautschi Pint and cntrl f islated plants will cntinue as a pririty. Develp burn plans fr Bicre Prairie, Raymer s Cve, Upper Bill s Wds Savanna, and the nrthern edge f Bicre prairie alng Secnd Pint Wds. Status: Burns were planned but nt executed in the spring due t weather cnditins. Fall burn plans are in the wrks. Manage vegetatin in Muir Wds, alng the Hward Temin Lakeshre Path, and alng the Picnic Pint main path. Status: Vegetatin management (t cntrl vines and invasive shrubs and t maintain views t the lake) tk place in all three areas and mre is planned fr the fall. Increase plant species diversity thrugh supplemental seeding and planting in areas already under management, such as the University Bay shreline at Picnic Pint. Status: Planting ccurred in many areas f the Preserve and has been summarized in a separate PwerPint presentatin. Fall seeding is planned fr many areas where we remved invasive shrubs and vines. Develp Indian mund management plicy implementatin guidelines. Status: A campus wide plicy n mund management was reviewed by the Preserve Cmmittee and the Arbretum Cmmittee and subsequently apprved by the Campus Planning Cmmittee. Further wrk is needed n detailed vegetatin management plicies under specific vegetatin management plans fr each area that has Indian munds. Manage vegetatin n the Indian munds in Picnic Pint and Willw Creek Wds. Status: Daniel Einstein mwed the Willw Creek Wds munds. Adam Gundlach mwed the Picnic Pint Indian munds twice t maintain views f the mund cnturs. Vegetatin between the Picnic Pint munds was left fr bidiversity and aesthetics. 9/19/2011 1

Status: N wrk has been perfrmed specifically t implement ersin cntrl ther than wrk currently being dne n the eastern tip f Picnic Pint. Wrk with the Arbretum and Madisn Parks Department t allw brush burning as a management tl in the Preserve. Status: Fllw-up is needed t cntinue t push fr reversal f the recently apprved City f Madisn rdinance t ban brush pile burning. 2) Outreach Build the vlunteer prgram by: Expanding utreach thrugh scial media. Develping infrmatinal brchures. Updating the Lakeshre Nature Preserve website n an n-ging basis. Increasing student and cmmunity grup participatin. Increasing use f the Preserve by faculty and students fr university cursewrk. Cntinuing t develp n-ging partnerships with rganizatins, including the Friends f the Preserve, Students fr the Lakeshre Nature Preserve, etc. Status: The Preserve Facebk page was established in February Website updates are being implemented n a regular basis. Recruitment f new and repeat student and cmmunity rganizatins is nging. Student and faculty use f the Preserve is mre integrated int ur management, imprving the student experience and ur management effectiveness. See belw fr training services prvided fr Friends f the Lakeshre Nature Preserve. Prvide site based and virtual infrmatin thrugh temprary wrk activity signs, audi trail recrdings, and the website. Status: Temprary site descriptin and wrk activity signs were updated (with the help f a vlunteer) and installed this summer. Signs that were n lnger relevant were remved. N changes were made t the existing audi trail. Plan fr and prvide vlunteer training fr field activities including recmmendatins fr certificatin. Status: A safety training prgram series was develped and prvided in partnership with the UW Arbretum t prvide training especially fr Friends f the Lakeshre Nature Preserve vlunteers. Five Friends members participated and at least 2 f them are interested in helping t apply herbicide in the field under the supervisin f Preserve staff. Begin develpment f a crdinated cmmunicatin plan fr the Preserve. Status: Preserve and Landscape Architecture staff implemented new signs and web updates fr plicy utreach and prject activity updates. 3) Site Infrastructure Maintain trails and wrk with campus partners fr user safety and enjyment f the Preserve. Status: Implemented bicycle plicy change fr Picnic Pint with temprary signage, and rdered permanent signs t be installed this fall. 9/19/2011 2

3 Implement signage plan. Status: Trailhead signs and kisks have been designed fr future implementatin. Install benches as dnatins allw. Status: Benches that have been dnated have been installed. Three new cast irn frnt cuntry benches were installed, replacing existing temprary benches. Fur wd slab, back cuntry benches were installed. Maintain Picnic Pint pit tilets (Custdial Department) and rutinely remve trash (Waste and Recycling Department). Status: Onging. Remve hazard trees, cntrl ersin, and install safety signs and barriers (Grunds Department). Status: Onging Maintain bike paths, rads and parking areas, including the access rad in Eagle Heights gardens and alng the main Picnic Pint path at the Narrws. (Grunds Department). Status: Onging. Picnic Pint path wrk delayed until end f cnstructin truck traffic. 4) Administrative Supprt Prvide supprt fr the Preserve Cmmittee and subcmmittees. Status: Onging. Manage research and recreatin permits. Status: Onging Assist with capital prject planning. Status: Onging Develp annual budgets and wrk plans. Status: Starting the prcess fr FY2012. Prvide develpment pprtunities fr UW Fundatin fund raising and financial supprt t cntinue building the Preserve endwment and stewardship resurces. Status: The Preserve directr is wrking with the UW Fundatin t draft an annual giving prgram and lng range develpment plan fr the Preserve. 4 5) Capital Prject Supprt (alpha rder by name, nt priritized) Bills Wds accessible birding area - Add a wheel chair turnut t the limestne screening path at the base f Bill s Wds t prvide an accessible bird viewing area. Status: Cmpleted. Eastern Bills Wds Friends f the Lakeshre Nature Preserve Restratin Prject - Cntinue t cntrl invasive plants, add native plants, and develp a burn plan fr Upper Bills Wds. Status: Garlic mustard was pulled and new native plants were added in the spring. A prescribed burn was scheduled fr a small prtin f the wds in the spring f 2011, but weather cnditins prevented executin. Class f 1918 Marsh trail - Restre the limestne screening trail that has washed away; renvate/rebuild the degraded viewing platfrms. Status: Re-establishment f the suth trail is scheduled fr late fall by the UW Grunds staff. Refurbishing f existing benches is a ptential prject late fall. The existing viewing platfrm may nt require recnstructin. Class f 1946 Frautschi Pint entry imprvements - Install native landscaping at the entry t Frautschi Pint in and arund the parking lt. Status: Nt started yet. Will need t be deferred t spring Class f 1953 Lakeshre Path imprvements - Cntinue t increase the diversity f plants frm Willw Creek t Picnic Pint with new swale and shreline vegetatin, including the Triangle Marsh. Status: Planting cmpleted by vlunteers and staff. The areas will be ver-seeded this fall. Class f 1955 Tent Clny Wds imprvements - Cntinue t cntrl invasive plants, add a diversity f native wdland plants, and cntrl ersin. Status: A cntractr will perfrm buckthrn and hneysuckle remval this fall. The gully in central Tent Clny Wds was planted this spring by vlunteers and staff. Class f 1959 Picnic Pint fire site imprvements - Cntrl sil ersin, prtect the big Oak tree, allw lake access, and install an imprved rustic fire seating area at picnic site #2. Status: Prject deferred until 2012 while the eastern tip f Picnic Pint is finished. Eagle Heights Strmwater Management Plan - Mnitr design and prvide review and input int the planning & design prcess. Status: Engineering cnsultants have been hired by the State and initial cncept plans have been develped n hw t manage strmwater in and arund Eagle Heights. Detailed cnstructin plans will be develped later this fall. Eagle Heights Wds Management Plan - Begin develpment f a restratin and management plan. Status: On-ging. A graduate student in landscape architecture, wrking with Prf. Evelyn Hwell, has begun gathering histric and field data abut Eagle Heights Wds in anticipatin f develping a management plan fr this area. 9/19/2011 4

5 Heritage Oak: Friends f the Lakeshre Nature Preserve Vegetatin Management Prject first year plans t remve invasive plants, seed cleared areas, and plant savanna vegetatin under the drip line f the Heritage Oak. Status: Brush clearing directly west, nrth and suth f the ak was cmpleted by vlunteers and staff. Vlunteers and staff planted under the drip line f the ak. The area will be ver seeded this fall. The Grunds Strage berm was sprayed twice and will be seeded this fall. Lt 60 Strmwater Management Plan - Mnitr design and prvide review and input int the planning & design prcess. Status: Engineering cnsultants have been hired by the State and initial cncept plans have been develped n hw t manage strmwater in and arund Lt 60. Detailed cnstructin plans will be develped later this fall fr a new wet basin nrth f Lt 60 in the area f the ld impund lt. Picnic Pint entry path imprvements - Rerute the limestne screening path frm the nrth t avid the naturally wet sil cnditins and allw maintenance and safety vehicle access. Status: Nt started. Picnic Pint Imprvements - Install shreline stabilizatin, sil prtectin, plantings, pedestrian access, and fire site gathering circle imprvements at the tip f Picnic Pint. Status: In prgress. Willw Creek Wds Savanna restratin - Add seeds and plants, including trees and shrubs, that can be planted with a minimum f sil disturbance. Status: Herbaceus plugs and small bare rt trees and shrubs were planted this spring. Grund layer vegetatin cntrl and seeding is nging. A management plan will be a wrk plan prject. University Bay Drive Strmwater Management Plan - Mnitr design and prvide review and input int the planning & design prcess. Status: This is part f the verall West Campus Strmwater Management prject that is underway t mitigate strmwater n the west campus and in Eagle Heights. See prject ntes abve. Design is underway fr future cnstructin. ***** 9/19/2011 5
