2 Welcme New Master Gardeners Welcme t the Oregn State University Extensin Service Master Gardener Prgram in Hd River Cunty. This guide is intended t prvide an intrductin t the prgram. Hpefully, it prvides answers t frequently asked questins and is meant t be a resurce t yu thrughut yur time as a Master Gardener. The Master Gardener Prgram is designed t meet the infrmatin and educatin needs f gardeners in ur cmmunity. Its purpse is t teach yu mre abut the science and art f gardening. In turn, as a trained Master Gardener vlunteer, yu will prvide infrmatin and technical assistance abut gardening t the public thrugh yur vlunteer service. Becming a Master Gardener vlunteer can be a very enriching and rewarding experience. During the next year, yu will receive 50+ hurs f classrm training n many aspects f gardening and hrticulture. The series f Wednesday evenings are designed t strengthen yur gardening knwledge and skills. The classes are taught by Extensin persnnel and ther qualified educatrs. An imprtant resurce fr the training is Sustainable Gardening: the Oregn-Washingtn Master Gardener Handbk. Yu will receive a cpy f the handbk, the cst f which is included in the prgram registratin fees. There will be additinal handuts fr many f the classes, and yu may want t cme prepared t take ntes. T cmplete the prgram and becme a certified Master Gardener vlunteer, yu must participate in the training prgram, pass the final exam, and cntribute 45 hurs f vlunteer service in apprved activities utlined belw designed t bring gardening infrmatin t the cmmunity. During yur first year as a Master Gardener, yu will fcus yur service hurs n prjects t familiarize yurself with educatinal utreach. The secnd year as a Master Gardener, yu will have the pprtunity t dive int plant clinics mre fully. Yur secnd year, yu must cmplete 24 f yur 36 vlunteer service hurs in plant clinics. Yur vlunteer service is recgnized and highly valued by OSU. In 2018, Master Gardener vlunteers in the Hd River prgram recrded arund 3,800 hurs f vlunteer time. Using Independent Sectr estimates, this translates int a dllar value f abut $90,000. A veteran Master Gardener has been assigned as yur mentr t assist yu and t answer questins yu may have during the training perid and the vlunteer service activities. Their gal is t help yu get ff t a gd start and guide yu thrugh yur first year as a Master Gardener. Dn t hesitate t cntact them if yu have any questins. In tandem with the Extensin Service, the Central Grge Master Gardener Assciatin supprts the prgram by prviding financial supprt fr prjects thrugh fundraising activities, spnsring additinal learning pprtunities, prducing the mnthly e-newsletter, and rganizing many scial activities. All Master Gardeners in the Hd River Cunty prgram are asked t be members f the Central Grge Master Gardener Assciatin, but membership is ptinal. As a member f the Assciatin, yu are encuraged t attend chapter meetings and ther scial events and get t knw yur fellw Master Gardeners.

3 Yur Cnnectin t Oregn State University OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY The main campus is lcated in Crvallis, and each cunty ffice is an Extensin f the university. The University has three missins: resident teaching, research, and utreach. As a Master Gardener, yu are nw a part f Oregn State University s vlunteer staff. OSU EXTENSION SERVICE This is the educatinal utreach arm f OSU that extends research and educatin services f OSU t the citizens f Oregn. As part f the land grant university system, the OSU Extensin Service serves bth rural and urban dwellers. Extensin Service persnnel include Extensin agents, prgram assistants, specialists, supprt staff, and a large number f vlunteers like yurself. Extensin wrks in five prgram areas: 4-H Yuth Develpment, Agriculture, Family and Cmmunity Health, Frestry, and Sea Grant (cean and castal issues). As a Master Gardener, yu are part f the Agriculture prgram area. OSU EXTENSION OFFICE Mst cunties in Oregn have an Extensin ffice staffed by agents, supprt staff and vlunteers. Funding fr staff typically cmes frm a cmbinatin f funds frm Oregn State University, the lcal cunty, Federal funds and grant funds. The partnership between the cunties and the University makes the Extensin Service pssible. A prtin f yur Master Gardener vlunteer service time will be spent in the lcal Extensin ffice answering gardening questins. OSU EXTENSION FACULTY OR STAFF This is a persn emplyed by OSU t extend infrmatin and educatin t the citizens f Oregn. Each faculty r staff member has a particular area f expertise and an assigned gegraphic area (ne r mre cunties) and is a faculty member in an OSU department. Mst, but nt all, Extensin faculty r staff with Master Gardener respnsibilities are members f the OSU Department f Hrticulture. Rachel Suits prvides verall prgram supervisin fr the prgram in Hd River Cunty. She manages all aspects f the Master Gardener Prgram like inviting presenters t the training, determines the times and lcatins f plant clinics, manages vlunteers and evaluates the prgram. She als wrks with Small Farms in Hd River and Wasc Cunties. OSU EXTENSION SERVICE MASTER GARDENER PROGRAM STATE COORDINATOR Gail Langelltt is the State Crdinatr and has respnsibilities fr crdinating the Master Gardener Prgram n a statewide basis. These respnsibilities include helping agents develp teaching prgrams fr Master Gardener vlunteers and crdinating activities and needs f a statewide nature. Vlunteer Opprtunities New and recertifying Master Gardeners must cmplete a minimum number f vlunteer service hurs in apprved activities t cmplete their certificatin. It is imprtant t track yur vlunteer hurs and yu can find a recrding time sheet n the Central Grge Master Gardener Assciatin (CGMGA) website. Master Gardener prjects prvide educatinal pprtunities beynd the end f classrm training. It is recmmended t participate in 3-5 different prjects yur first year. By participating in these prjects with ther Master Gardeners, yu will cntinue t learn, make new friends, and help OSU Extensin meet the infrmatin and educatin needs f gardeners in ur cmmunity. Vlunteer Service Hurs which supprt the educatinal missin f the Extensin Master Gardener Prgram are given highest pririty. Direct and indirect educatinal hurs shuld cnstitute at least 50% f a Master Gardener s required vlunteer service hurs each year. What are Direct Educatinal Hurs? Master Gardener activities that have the ptential t directly increase knwledge, change attitudes r change behavirs in ways that prmte sustainable gardening. A Master Gardener must be current n their certificatin, in rder t participate in activities that qualify fr direct educatinal hurs. Plant Clinic (n matter the venue): plant clinic is the venue thrugh which Master Gardeners receive gardening questins and prvide high-quality recmmendatins t the general public. Instructr (at a cnference, seminar series, Master Gardener training, Seed t Supper classes, Brassica and Beer, etc.): includes the time it takes t research, prepare and deliver the presentatin. Educatin in Gardens (demnstratin gardens, yuth garden, schl garden, prisn garden, garden tur): Teaching a class in an educatinal garden, leading a tur, preparing signage r educatinal displays, r ther educatinal activities may cunt twards direct service hurs. Writing an Educatinal Article: in a Master Gardener newsletter, fr a lcal newsletter, r cllabrating with an OSU Extensin faculty member t write an Extensin publicatin. Includes the time needed t research and write the article. What are Indirect Educatin Hurs? Indirect educatinal hurs is time spent n activities that facilitate r supprt the effrts f vlunteer educatrs. The vlunteer is nt directly teaching thers (via plant clinic

5 recmmendatins r gardening talks r demnstratins), but is supprting the effrts f thers wh are serving as direct educatrs. Examples include: Educatinal Event Planning (cnference, seminar series, MG training) Master Gardener Training Class Mentr: assisting with the annual Master Gardener training curse. Educatinal Garden Maintenance: Educatinal gardens require basic maintenance upkeep in rder t be effectively used in educatinal utreach. Thus, garden maintenance and upkeep activities might qualify fr direct educatinal vlunteer service hurs if wrk in the garden supprts an educatinal prject r prgram, and if garden maintenance and upkeep activities are nt the majr fcus f activity in the garden. If garden maintenance and upkeep becmes the majr fcus f activity, it is time t carefully examine the prject, and re-calibrate back t the educatinal missin and fcus f the Master Gardener Prgram. If Master Gardeners d nt hst at least tw public utreach events, annually, in the garden, it likely des nt qualify as an educatinal garden. Vlunteer service hurs in gardens that are nt educatinal gardens d nt cunt as indirect educatinal hurs. Other Apprved Activities: as determined by yur lcal Master Gardener crdinatin, in the cntext f current OSU Extensin Master Gardener guidelines and plicy. What are Supprt Hurs? These are hurs spent n Master Gardener activities that are nt fcused n educatinal utreach. Instead, supprt activities help t supprt the missin f the OSU Extensin Master Gardener Prgram. Examples f supprt activities include: Fundraiser (plant sale, garden turs, bk sales, etc.) Extensin Office Supprt: filing, database management, phtcpies, r ther duties related t the Extensin ffice MG Assciatin: including serving as an fficer, bard member r in an appinted psitin in a MG chapter r in the Oregn Master Gardener Assciatin Other Apprved Activities: as determined by yur lcal Master Gardener crdinatin, in the cntext f current OSU Extensin Master Gardener guidelines and plicy DIRECT EDUCATION WITH CGMGA Plant Clinics: All returning Master Gardeners are required t cmplete 12 hurs f vlunteer service in plant clinics. New Master Gardener vlunteers can participate in 1-3 plant clinics their first year with their mentr and will vlunteer 24 plant clinic hurs their secnd year as a Master Gardener. Yu earn vlunteer hurs at all f the plant clinics. Clinics take place at the Hd River Extensin Office, ACE Hardware, and lcal festivals and events during the year.

6 Yu will research and answer gardening prblems and questins frm peple in the cmmunity. When yu lk up infrmatin fr smene else, yu are learning t. Hd River Extensin Office Plant Clinics: Trainings are ffered very year n hw t answer phnes, use the cmputer t access gardening infrmatin and fill ut plant clinic frms crrectly. Plant clinics are held at Hd River Extensin Office n Mndays and Thursdays frm 1:00 p.m. t 4:00 p.m. There is an additinal ffice plant clinic n Thursdays frm 9:00 a.m. t nn, but this clinic is nt pen t the public. Master Gardeners will fcus n answering the questins that are already n the desk during this mrning clinic. ACE Hardware Plant Clinic and Festivals: Vlunteering at these places as an OSU Master Gardener gives yu the pprtunity t interact with visitrs and cmmunity members t answer many different types f gardening questins. Hwever, in 2019, because f the changing frmat fr vlunteer service, we will be putting all festivals n hld. We will resume plant clinics at festivals and ther cmmunity events in Hd River Library Waterwise Garden: Garden plts at the entryway f the Hd River Cunty Library were designed and are maintained by Master Gardeners as an educatinal prject fr the cmmunity highlighting drught tlerant plants. Prject Leaders: Susan Sanchez and Susan Stender. The Learning Garden: Several garden features make up this demnstratin garden arund the OSU Extensin ffice at the Mid-Clumbia Agricultural Research and Extensin Center in Hd River. The Learning Garden currently cnsists f these prjects: Cmpst Demnstratin Area, Herb Garden, Shade Garden, Hellstrip r Curbside Garden, Native Plant Garden, Biswales, EcLawn, Japanese Heritage Garden and Ornamental Grasses. Prject Leader: Laurel DeTar. Seed t Supper: A cmprehensive, 6-week beginning gardening curse that ffers nvice, adult gardeners the basic gardening knwledge they need t successfully grw a prtin f their wn fd n a limited budget. It was riginally develped as a jint effrt f Oregn Fd Bank (OFB) and the Oregn State University Extensin Service, Seed t Supper is ffered in cllabratin with hst agencies arund the state. Prject Leader: Renee Taylr. FISH Fd Bank and Spirit f Grace Garden: A cmmunity garden lcated n the Spirit f Grace Church grunds next t the FISH Fd Bank. The cmmunity garden is designed t prduce highly nutritius and staple vegetables that g directly int the fd bank distributin. The garden als prvides educatinal pprtunities fr bth fd bank clients and cmmunity members interested in learning mre abut vegetable gardening. Prject Leader: Sidney Axtell.

7 INDIRECT EDUCATION Central Grge Master Gardener Assciatin Mentr Prgram: The mentr prgram is designed t prvide a welcming atmsphere fr new Master Gardeners frm the time they sign up fr the Master Gardener classes until they becme well established in the prgram. Veteran Master Gardeners vlunteer as mentrs and are cmmitted t assisting new members. Prject Leader: Jhn Stevens. Garden Visits: Visits t the gardens f fellw Master Gardeners ccur 3-4 times per year. These infrmal events allw us t enjy new gardens, get ideas (and smetimes plants), eat gd fd, and have fun scializing with ur friends. Prject Leader: Kathy McGregr. Hliday Greenery Event: Scheduled fr early December, Master Gardeners, friends and family gather t create swags and wreaths primarily as a service prject fr the lcal fd pantries and sme fr persnal use. Prject Leader: Shari Bsler. SUPPORT Spring Plant Sale: The annual plant sale is held in May n the Saturday befre Mther s Day. It is a fundraising event fr the Central Grge Master Gardener Assciatin and cmmunity prjects. All Master Gardeners are asked t participate by helping t prpagate starts, tend t the greenhuse, r vlunteer during the sale. Prject Leader: LJ Jhnsn. Garden Tur: This tur f private and public gardens in the cmmunity is pen t the public and cnducted as bth an educatinal event and fundraiser fr the prgram. All Master Gardeners are asked t vlunteer during the garden tur. Each garden n the tur has Master Gardeners wrking as guides and answering questins. Educatinal spts are displayed in the gardens and refreshments are prvided. The next tur is planned fr summer Prject Leaders: Heidi Nastasi and Renee Taylr. Central Grge Master Gardener Assciatin Greenhuse: The Greenhuse is maintained and perated as a facility t supprt the prjects f the Central Grge Master Gardener Assciatin. Funded in large part thrugh the generus cntributins f the Drthy Metcalf Charitable Trust and built by ur chapter members, this facility is dedicated fr the use f ur chapter t further the missin f cmmunity utreach and nging educatin in Hme Hrticulture. Graduatin Banquet: The Graduatin Banquet held in Octber r Nvember is a time t recgnize ur new Master Gardeners wh have cmpleted their first year f training/vlunteer

8 service and t hnr the years f service and achievements f all Central Grge Master Gardeners. There are pprtunities t assist with rganizing the banquet as part f yur service hurs Prject Leader: Sandy Mntag. Hspitality C-chairs: Facilitate cffee and tea, rm arrangements fr Master Gardener classes in the winter, and rganize vlunteers t assist with hspitality. Cntact Heidi Nastasi. Master Gardener Member Classificatins Master Gardener Trainee: a Master Gardener in years 1 and 2 f cmpleting the certificatin requirements, which include participating in the training prgram, passing the final exam, and cntributing 45 hurs f vlunteer service in apprved prject activities yur first year. T fully becme a recertifying Master Gardener, yu will need t cmplete 36 hurs in yur secnd year, 24 f which need t be in plant clinics. Veteran Master Gardener: a Master Gardener wh has cmpleted the certificatin prgram and wishes t remain active in the prgram beynd their secnd year. Veteran Master Gardeners are required t recertify each year by cmpleting 24 hurs f training, passing the final exam and cmpleting 24 hurs f vlunteer service, 12 f which must be in plant clinics. Veteran Master Gardeners must cmplete applicatin materials and pay a classrm fee plus assciatin dues. Lifetime Master Gardener: a veteran Master Gardener becmes a Lifetime Master Gardener after cmpleting 10 years f active participatin in the prgram (years d nt need t be cnsecutive). Lifetime Master Gardeners d nt pay prgram fees r assciatin dues but must cmplete applicatin materials t remain n membership rlls. T remain certified as an active Master Gardener in the prgram and participate in plant clinics and ther prjects, they must cmplete 24 hurs f training and 24 hurs f vlunteer service, 12 f which must be in plant clinics. Assciate Master Gardeners: this is an ptin fr Master Gardeners wh want t remain affiliated with the prgram but nt cmplete the training r vlunteer requirements fr recertificatin. Assciates may participate in assciatin events, but may nt participate in prjects requiring recertificatin. If Assciate members want t attend classes during the year, they will need t pay per class during the winter training r pay the full membership fee t access classes thrughut the year. They are als required t pay assciatin dues.

9 Oregn Master Gardener Assciatin (OMGA) The OMGA is a separate, but clsely aligned, rganizatin frm the OSU Master Gardener Prgram that prvides several supprting functins fr the prgram. It is a statewide, nnprfit rganizatin made up f many cunty chapters, which tgether, make up the state assciatin. OMGA is financed by dues cntributed at the cunty chapter level. Representatives frm each chapter meet with OMGA state fficers at quarterly meetings held in varius lcatins arund the state. These meetings prvide a netwrking pprtunity and a frum fr chapters t share ideas and activities. OMGA c-spnsrs an annual cnference with OSU. The Oregn Master Gardener Assciatin (OMGA) serves fur main functins t the Oregn Master Gardener Prgram: T enhance and supplement the Oregn State University Hme Hrticulture Prgram. T assume respnsibility fr perfrming special tasks and engaging in cntinuus activities related t the prgram. T prmte a wide disseminatin f infrmatin available as a result f University study and experimentatin. Such infrmatin shall be in accrdance with Oregn State University standards. T wrk with ther gardening rganizatins t enhance gardening in Oregn, when apprpriate. OMGA CONFERENCE every year OMGA and OSU Extensin Service c-spnsr a cnference. The cnference includes classes, wrkshps, and seminars n hrticultural tpics, an OMGA quarterly meeting and annual awards banquet. This cnference is an pprtunity t receive advanced training and learn frm ther Master Gardeners thrughut the state. It is als pen t the gardening public. The cnference timing is changing in 2019 t Octber. Central Grge Master Gardener Assciatin (CGMGA) The CGMGA is a lcal chapter f OMGA. Members include Master Gardeners frm Hd River cunty and adjacent cunties in bth Oregn and Washingtn. CGMGA is als a nn-prfit educatinal rganizatin that helps t prmte the OSU Master Gardener Prgram and prvide pprtunities fr additinal educatinal training thrughut the year. Dues are $17 per year, f which $10 g t the CGMGA treasury and $7 g t the OMGA treasury. The membership year begins January 1 st and runs thrugh December 31 st. Master Gardener trainees wh finish the training prgram are members f OMGA and CGMGA thrugh that year. CGMGA rganizes several educatinal and scial events each year. As a member f the Assciatin, yu are welcme and encuraged t attend all f these events. A cmmittee cnsisting f elected fficers and prject leaders make up the CGMGA Executive Cmmittee.

10 This cmmittee meets n the secnd Tuesday each mnth frm 10am-nn at the Extensin ffice cnference rm t manage the assciatin business.
