5 Birnam lies adjacent to The Royal Burgh of Dunkeld, both of which are on the banks of the River Tay. Together they provide a wealth of amenities including a primary school, medical centre, post office, bank, delicatessen, butcher and coffee shops. There is the 18 hole Dunkeld and Birnam golf course and the Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel which, for members, provides a swimming pool and leisure facilities. Close by, The Hermitage, owned by The National Trust for Scotland, is a well loved woodland walk and Dunkeld railway station is on the north side of the A9 with regular services north and south. Perth, about 13 miles south of Birnam, has an excellent range of shops, supermarkets and professional services, and is in a pivotal position with motorway and dual carriageway connections to all the major cities of central Scotland. Perth Railway Station provides direct services to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness and a sleeper service to London. The local primary school is The Royal School of Dunkeld with secondary schooling at Breadalbane Academy in Aberfeldy.
